My Views on Examinations

In most colleges and universities the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds or fails in mastering a particular subject. Although it does the job quite efficiently, its side effects are also enormous.

To begin with, examinations lower the standards of teaching. Since teachers are often judged by examination results, they are reduced to training their students in exam techniques. No subjects can be taught successfully merely through being approached with intent to take examinations. In addition, the most undesirable effect is that examinations encourage bad study habits. As the examination score is the only criterion for his academic performance, a student is driven to memorize mechanically rather than to think creatively.

In fact, few of us admit that examinations can contribute anything really important to the students’ academic development. If that is the case, why can’t we make a change and devise something more efficient and reliable than examination?

High School GPA and Standardized Test Scores in Calculating Freshman Applicant

Eligibility at the University of California

Abstract

This study examines the validity of high school GPA and standardized test scores in the admission process and their role in determining applicant eligibility. It also describes the method that the University of California uses to calculate freshman

eligibility. The study shows that high school GPA has a higher validity than do test scores. High school GPA mainly reflects student high school course-related achievements, while standardized test scores demonstrate cognitive abilities. Therefore, it is more effective to calculate freshman eligibility by combining GPA and test scores to assess applicant knowledge, abilities, and achievement in college admissions process.

(The Board of Admissions and Relations with Schools)的组织负责商榷拟定,由学校董事会统一制定颁发。 (Eligibility in the Local Context);(2)标准化考试成绩合格性确定标准(Eligibility by Examination Only);(3)特殊才能合格性确定标准(Admissions by Exception);(4)高中和标准化考试成绩合格性确定标准(Eligibility in UC Score Index)。

这八门课程由申请学生从AP(Advanced Placement)课程、IB(International Baccalaureate)2课程、高级别的中学课程以及大学级别的课程中选取。

Directions: For this part you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Is Stress a

Bad Thing? You should write at least 120 composition on the outline below:

1、有人害怕压力

2、有人认为压力并不是坏事

3、我的看法

In the past few years, quite a number of men and women have chosen to do something less competitive. They are afraid that the stress and strains of work will rob them of joy and happiness and do them harm both physically and mentally.

In fact, however, stress isn’t the bad thing it is often supposed to be. Above all, unless it gets out of control, a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and challenge, and to give purpose and significance to an otherwise meaningless, idle life. Furthermore, people under stress tend to express their full range of potential and to actualize their own personal worth—the very aim of a human life.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and avoid it. What we can do is to develop our adaptive abilities to deal with it rather than to escape from it.

Job hunting has always been a headache for college students. Though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. Most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation.

The reasons for this phenomenon are various. On the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. On the other hand, most graduates would rather stay

in suitable job to do than go to the country.

I reckon this problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. First, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. Second, students’ attitude towards employment should be changed. They should go to small cities and country. There they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. In a word, if we pay much attention, the situation can be improved.

In my life I have met many people who are really worth recalling. But perhaps the most unforgettable person I ever know is my English teacher.

What frequently brings back memories of my school teacher is his special qualities. First of all, he gave us the greatest gift a teacher can offer—

an awakening of . He not only led us to an appreciation of the beauty and perfection of English language and literature, but also aroused our great interest in explorating something deeper in this field. Second, I was attracted by his lively wit. I remember that we students always anticipated his class with great eagerness because his lecture were humorously delivered, never failing to provoke chuckles or loud laughs.

Although it is nearly two years since I attended his last class, he is the talk of our old classmates, and I know part of him has already stayed in my heart.

Studying Aborad

Nowadays, going abroad for studies is enjoying a striking popularity among adolescents. Importance should be attached to studying abroad.

There are a great many advantages of studying overseas. First and foremost, living and studying abroad offers students a different perspective of the world. On a university campus, international students are likely to encounter their counterparts from various countries and areas and are exposed to diverse ideas and values. What is more, overseas experience is the best opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken.

Generally speaking: it is my view that although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhile. In the first place, in addition to knowledge, overseas students can gain precious experiences that those who stay at home will never have. Furthermore, overseas experience, frustrating and painful as it may be, is conducive to the growth of adolescents.

Internet

In recent years, people are developing an inseparable relationship with Internet. As is known to all, it is convenient for us to click the mouse when surfing on line, either to entertain ourselves or to meet the work's needs.

On the one hand, no one denies that Internet is currently one of the must useful media in our dally life. As a college student, I get on line every day to exchange information through e-mails with my net friends. But on the other hand, a good many people admit that they are too much addicted to Internet to maintain a regular and wholesome lifestyle.

Thus, it is necessary for us to use Internet in a reasonable way and restrain from overindulgence. After all, Internet is invented to enrich our life, and to improve the efficiency of our work rather than shackle us with a chain.

Which to Celebrate--the Westen or Eastern Festivals?

Nowadays, the majority of young people are willing to celebrate western festivals. As a result, importance should be attached to the issue of festival celebration.

For one thing, western festival celebrations are so colorful that especially the youth cannot resist all the temptation of having one. Just imagine the romantic atmosphere on St. Valentine's Day, the fun on All Fool's Day and the ecstasy brought by gills and games at Christmas. For another, Chinese festivals have their own attractions.

Think about the comfort of family reunion during Spring Festival and the delicacy of national feelings on many occasions.

As for me, some fashionable western festivals are no doubt days to set aside as special. Meanwhile, I cannot afford to be absent from family gathering during many Chinese festivals. My celebration would be a combined one, some for western festivals, some for Chinese ones.

According to the recent survey by CCTV, 80% of people who surf online are there in, search of social interaction. As a consequence, the voice speaking through the other side of the line can be used to disguise aspects of a user's personality. And this might bring an unpleasant or even damaging outcome.

Numerous examples can be given, but this will suffice. One of my closest friend, Helen, started a net relationship with a man she knew as "Prince Charming". The physical contact, however, reveals that her beloved idol was a husband with wife.

In my view, first and foremost, it is true that people may gain community on the net, but this exists only in cyberspace. Furthermore, although Internet friendship can give users companionship and even romance, it often ends with failure and even disaster. It is high time that we placed great emphasis on this phenomenon.

Juvenile Delinquency

Recently, juvenile delinquency is increasingly lower than normal age. Careful deliberation of this problem has given me several ideas as to why this should be so.

To begin with, with the rising divorce rate, some children are not properly taken care of, and are easily led astray by evildoers. What is more, inexperienced and gullible young people plunge into the illusory world of electric games, on-line chat or even pornography. Such alienation from proper social values is the slippery slope to crime.

It is my view that, first of all, the whole of society should attach great importance to the sound growth of youngsters. Furthermore, proper guidance and protection of adults and schools are vital to teenagers. To sum up, if we exert every effort, the juvenile crime rate will undoubtedly be brought down and effectively controlled in a short while.

My favorite novel is Around the World in Eighty Days which is written by Jules Verne. The author was born in France and devoted himself to literature and wrote several scientific romances, which gained him the name-Father of Modem Science Fiction.

This is a book of science fiction which tells us an exciting story about an English gentleman, Mr. Phileas Fogg, who makes a bet with his clubmates and manages to travel around the world in eighty days. It gives us a vivid description of the many difficulties and incidents which happen on his journey.

From this story, we can see the author's deep love for the sea, travel and adventure, which played a vital role in his life. We are also astonished and convinced by his fertile imagination and scientific and geographical knowledge.

Stastistics in People's Daily Expenses in Xi'an

What is shown in the table above indicates that dramatic changes have taken place in the daily expenses in Xi'an from 1995 to 1999. The expenses on food have declined by 30% while those on closing and recreation have increased respectively by 90/0 and 7%.

There are two factors accounting for these changes. In the first place, the risen income resulting from economic growth plays a vital role in the less expense on food. In the second place, when food presents no worry

to the average, people begin to focus more of their interest on handsome appearance and happy leisure time. As a result of such a shift, spending on clothing and recreation increases year by year.

From the analyses made above, with the further growth in economy and more changes in life style, the tendency indicated in the table will continue in the better direction.

Green Consumption

The conception of green consumption has gradually become popular in China. More and more green foods are making their appearance on the market and more and more people are becoming conscious of environmental protection.

However, there still exist quite a few difficulties in the further promotion of green consumption. On the one hand, many people are still not quite clear of the advantages of green foods. On the other hand, due to high profits, many fake green foods are found in the market. Moreover, many consumers don’t want to pay extra money for green foods.

There may be several ways to solve these problems. Firstly, the government should supervise the good quality strictly to protect consumers’ interests. Secondly, the conception of green consumption should be further promoted and emphasized. Thirdly, the government should work together with manufacturers to make the price more reasonable.

Frustration Education should be Strengthened among College Students

It is universally acknowledged that college students should be guided correctly to face

frustrations in life. Frustration is inevitable during our life, and frustration education should be carried out among colleges and universities. The truth of it is deep and profound.

A great many remarkable illustrations contribute to this argument. A case in point is that there are an increasing number of college students committing suicide each year when confronted with some kind of frustration. This is close to suggest that strengthening frustration education allows of no delay. As a matter of fact, it seems that successful people tend to be good at dealing with frustrations. Moreover, most of the students are often annoyed and discouraged by frustrations instead of drawing lessons.

Judging from the evidence offered, we might safely draw the conclusion that frustration education is essential to the college students. But what is worth noting is colleges should also provide psychological service for the students while giving frustration education. To conclude, college students should be guided in the right path when facing setbacks in life.

My View on the “Campus Star” Contest

At an age of character and individuality being encouraged and demonstrated, we see various “stars” pop up—singing stars, dancing stars, movie stars and sport stars, etc. Many schools even hold contests to choose their “Campus Stars”. Although these activities make our cultural life in campus more colorful and varied, a lot of problems spring up at the same time. First of all, these activities can result in the swelling of vanity in some students, making them become arrogant, or even feel superior to other students. Moreover, these activities can greatly distract the students from their study. In order to become a star, they will, without any doubt, spend a lot of time and energy on the preparation and competition. The focus of their academic life will be shifted, and even worse, they can become too enthusiastic about

extracurricular activities and hate the academic knowledge and skills they need to grasp for their future development.

On the whole, I think these various “Campus Star” contests should be controlled in the campus. After all, schools are different from any other social institutions. Extracurricular activities should be encouraged, but they should be helpful to the student’s academic study and all-round development.

As the saying goes, you don't know what happiness is until you lose it', you don't know what health is until you are ill. "Health is of vital importance to life" sounds like a cliche to everyone, but it is absolutely true.

The negligence of the delicate balance of your body and soul, the harmful habits such as smoking, excessive drinking and burning mid-night oil will catch up with you someday. How many big plans are interrupted by bad health! Even a normal life is unimaginable without the guarantee of health.

How to keep fit is an eternal topic of diversity and controversy. Regardless of all the different suggestions poured from all kinds of sources, one should do at least two things for him/herself. First, hold an active and optimistic attitude toward life and maintain a mental well-being. Second, live a regular life and keep a balanced diet. Anyway, a healthy life is within reach when you begin to adjust your mind and body.

Giving Children Cell Phones

More and more children are showing up at school each September with cell phones. Many parents buy their children a cell phone because it is a nice safety measure. It gives those working parents a little sense of control and security to know when their children are off campus and on their way home.

But having a cell phone might be a problem. Parents may find themselves facing a frightening bill at the end of the month. The reason: chatting on the phone and sending text messages can soon become the favorite pastime of preteens and teenagers. Worse still, cell phones in schools can lead to classroom distractions, text-message cheating and inappropriate photographs.

Knowing their children can always be reached is reassuring for parents. But before buying their child a cell phone, I think parents should decide if the child is really capable of managing his or her own phone. Besides, parental control must be exercised in the use of the phone. For example, they should set limits on how long the child is allowed to stay on the phone.

Should Food Be Banned on the Subway?

Currently, some cities are considering a food ban on subways, which has sparked heated discussion. Some people say food should be banned because of the trash and rats they attract. And, garbage from discarded food can cause track fires. Beyond sanitary and mechanical

concerns, food can also cause fights, as was discovered last week by one passenger who criticized a woman eating steamed stuffed bun on the subway.

However, some others are opposed to the idea. They argue that people like eating in the train in the morning because they don't have enough time to eat at their houses or restaurants. Sometimes that may be the only time or meal a transit rider may be able to eat especially when traveling long distances. Besides, there are people, for example diabetics, who do require food at various times to maintain blood-sugar levels.

Personally, I'm against the ban because of the huge inconvenience it would cause to commuters, and the expense involved in enforcing it. Still, I believe we should have a little

common courtesy. I think we all have responsibility to try to treat our subway system and fellow riders with respect, and that extends to food as well.

There is no consensus of opinions among people as to the necessity of a spoken English test. because we have been informed frequently that a Chinese student who has been learning English for over ten years cannot even communicate with a native speaker. Sometimes even those top students who excel in grammar and writing skills find their English inadequate to express their thoughts freely. A test of English will bring the college students an awareness of the importance of oral English, and will thus help them with their communicating skills. skills will be enough for the English learners. To some extent their opinion derives from the fact that students are already under considerable pressure from their coursework. Another required test will only add to their burden. Moreover, some students may take the shortcut by focusing on several guessed questions according to the fixed format of the test, hoping for a coincidence to bring them good luck.

a test of spoken English will do more good than harm. Since China will continue its policy of opening and reform, the ability to speak English fluently is a must for anyone who wants to surpass others in a highly competitive society. Whether I take the test or not, I shall spare no efforts to practice oral English in the remaining years of my college study.

Practice Makes Perfect

A well-known proverb goes “Practice makes perfect”, which means that perfection lies in practice. Without practice, you can never expect to be really good at anything. On the contrary, the more you practice, the more likely you are to do things in a perfect way.

Taking a look around, we can find examples too numerous to list. The study of English is a case in point. If you wish to improve your pronunciation, you must practice pronouncing every English syllable again and again. Likewise, if you want to write an excellent composition, you have to sit down and write.Another example is Deng Yaping, the world No. 1 woman Ping-pong player. This short girl, who does not seem to be cut out for sports, owes her success to painstaking and perseverant practice.

In short, practice is essential if we want to make achievements in our studies or work, or indeed in any other aspect of our life. Practice, to some degree, can make the difference between being merely good at something and becoming a champion.

Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists?

Recently, people take a fancy visiting prestigious universities in that the scenery on campus is equally beautiful as in those scenic spots. Yet, this hot issue has caused wide concern, giving rise to opposite opinions among the public.

The majority of people have formed an unrealistic picture of opening the campus to the tourists, imagining this as a way of making profits while taking full advantage of natural scenery and academic atmosphere there. Unfortunately, some others strongly oppose this owing to the potential danger of spoiling the quietness and interrupting the educational seriousness in the ivory towers.

Accordingly, I reckon that it is acceptable and profitable to open the university campus for sightseeing. While at the same time, we should bear in mind that the fundamental function of universities is to impart theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills.

January 12th, 2002

Dear Mr. President,

I am a sophomore from the Department of Law. I am writing the letter in purpose of complaining about the food and service in the canteen on campus.

To be frank, I am rather disappointed at the food quality, price and service in the canteen. First, the dishes are scarcely well cooked and most of them taste the same. Secondly, most of the dishes there are priced so high that some students cannot even afford them. Thirdly, the service in the canteen is far from satisfying and the inside of the canteen always seem untidy.

To solve the problem, I suggest that another canteen be built and a mechanism of competition be introduced between the old and the new. Besides, both the canteens should be subject to the students' supervision. Dining is an everyday issue for students. It may affect their academic performance. Therefore, I sincerely hope this letter can draw your attention to the matter and I hope the problems mentioned above be solved as soon as possible.

Best wishes,

Studying Abroad

Nowadays, going abroad for studies is enjoying a striking popularity among adolescents. Importance should be attached to studying abroad.

There are a great many advantages of studying overseas. First and foremost, living and studying abroad offers students a different perspective of the world. On a university campus, international students are likely to encounter their counterparts from various countries and are exposed to diverse ideas and values. What is more, overseas experience is the best opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken.

Generally speaking, it is my view that although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhile. In the first place, in addition to knowledge, overseas students can gain precious experiences that those who stay at home will never have. Furthermore, overseas experience, frustrating and painful as it may be, is conducive to the growth of adolescents.

Jobs for Graduates

Job hunting has always been a headache for college students. Though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. Most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation.

The reasons for this phenomenon are various. On the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. On the other hand, most graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the country.

I reckon this problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. First, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. Second, students’ towards employment should be changed. They should go to small cities and country. There they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. In a word, if we pay much attention, the situation can be improved.

Internet

In recent years, people are developing an inseparable relationship with internet. As is known to all, it is convenient for us to click the mouse when surfing on line, either to entertain ourselves or to meet the work’s needs.

On the one hand, no one denies that internet is currently one of the most useful media in our daily life. As a college student, I get on line every day to exchange information through e-mails with my net friends. But on the other hand, a good many people admit that they are too much addicted to internet to maintain a regular and 1

wholesome lifestyle.

Thus, it is necessary for us to use internet in a reasonable way and restrain from overindulgence. After all, internet is invented to enrich our life, and to improve the efficiency of our work rather than shackle us with a chain.

My Views on Examinations

In most colleges and universities the examination is used as a chief means of deciding whether a student succeeds of fails in mastering a particular subject.

If that is the case, why cannot we make a change and devise something more efficient and reliable than examinations?

Which to Celebrate—the Western of Eastern Festivals?

Nowadays, the majority of young people are willing to celebrate western festivals. As a result, importance For one thing, western festival celebrations are so colorful that especially the youth cannot resist all the should be attached to the issue of festival celebration. temptation of having one. Just imagine the romantic atmosphere on St. Valentine’s Day, the fun on All Fool’s Day and the ecstasy brought by gifts and games at Christmas.

Internet Friendship

According to the recent survey by CCTV, 80% of people who surf online are there in search of social interaction. As a consequence, the voice speaking through the other side of the line can be used to disguise aspects of a user’s personality. And this might bring an unpleasant or even damaging outcome.

Numerous examples can be given, but this will suffice. One of my closest friend, Helen, started a net 2

relationship with a man she knew as “Prince Charming”.

Careful deliberation of this problem To begin with, with the rising divorce rate, some children are not properly taken care of, and are easily led has given me several ideas as to why this should be so. astray by evildoers.
