The Old Man and the Sea may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. Certainly, the qualities of Ernest Hemingway's short novel are those which we associate with many great stories of the past: near perfection of form within the limitations of its subject matter, restraint of treatment, regard for the unities of time and place, and evocative simplicity of style. Also, like most great stories, it can be read on more than one level of meaning. On one it is an exciting but tragic adventure story. Sustained by the pride of his calling, the only pride he has left, a broken old fisherman ventures far out into the Gulf Stream and there hooks the biggest marlin ever seen in those waters. Then, alone and exhausted by his struggle to harpoon the giant fish, he is forced into a losing battle with marauding sharks; they leave him nothing but the skeleton of his catch. On another level the book is a fable of the unconquerable spirit of man, a creature capable of snatching spiritual victory from circumstances of disaster and material defeat. On still another it is a parable of religious significance, its theme supported by the writer's unobtrusive handling of Christian symbols and metaphors. Like Coleridge's Ancient Mariner, Hemingway's Cuban fisherman is a character allowing the imagination of his creator to operate simultaneously in two different worlds of meaning and value, the one real and dramatic, the other moral and devotionally symbolic.

The Old Man and the Sea describes the experience of an old man who suffered from loneliness, frustration and the deprivation of his strength and vigor as a result of growing old, yet strong enough to get through all these adversities. He failed to catch any fish in 84 consecutive days, during which his only real friend—-a little boy was forced to leave him. Nevertheless, none of these

circumstances was formidable enough to make him forsake what he believed in or stop him from achieving his goal. The eyes of the weather-beaten man twinkled with an air of toughness. On the 85th day he set out with a greater goal, bearing in mind that every day is a new day and it could be the turning point of our life. Fortunately, he did meet a big fish that day. But as his strength was

relatively weak compared to the fish, it nearly consumed him to drag it onto the bank. Finally, he made it to the bank with all his energy drained, his whole body ached and he soon fell asleep, dreaming about the most powerful beast-- lions. Actually, the time he dragged the fish onto the bank, all he found was a set of the skeleton of the fish. Yet he is still a winner who deserves our respect and admiration. He believed that a man can be defeated, but can never be conquered. He is given the title “the American tough guy”.

I’ve gained considerably from this book. 84 days has past ,yet he never ceased to try. The moment he found the chance had come to him, he bravely embraced it without considering his own strength, because he knew clearly

that’s what he wanted and all that he’s been waiting for.

People told me that there isn’t such word as “failure” in the dictionary of youth. Most of time, we fail to be what we want to be because we don’t dare to struggle for it and we are afraid that we might fail in the end. But that actually does not matter. Life is not always about winning or losing, instead, it’s about trying to be the best you could possibly be and always give a hundred percent to whatever you’re doing.

We may wish everything went smoothly with our friends. But, as is often the case, it remains a well-intended wish, for nobody is lucky enough to avoid all the adversities and difficulties in his life. We should develop a more

advisable and positive attitude rather than beg for good luck.

Being a tough guy is especially important for people who’ve just embarked their career or further education. No matter what we do, no matter what choices we make, we are bound to confront with twists and turns. We may be angry at and complain about our jobs even to the point that we want to quit. We feel strangled by the burden we carry with us. We may be frustrated and cry out sometimes or doubt about the meaning of our existence. But it will all pass, you will make it through and everything is gonna be fine, and one day when you look back on how you’ve made it you will notice these difficulties which once deemed to be too great to conquer is no big deal now. But before you

notice that you have to be a tough guy.

Reading Report of The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the Sea was written by an American writer named Ernest Hemingway. It has been translated into tens of languages, and the writer was so proud of his work.

Santiago, the hero of the story, had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish back. At first, a boy named Manolion had been with him, but Santiago couldn’t catch even one fish. The boy had gone at his parents’ orders in a lucky boat which caught three good fish the first week, and the couple thought that it was definitely and finally bad to let their boy stay with the old fisherman. On Santiago’s eighty-fifth day of fishing, he went out alone, leaving the smell of the land behind and rowing out into the clean early morning smell of ocean. To his surprise, he caught a tuna which he had never seen before and it was hard to believe that the tuna was bigger than his boat. Later, the blood from the tuna left a trail for all sharks as wide as a highway, so fighting against sharks was unavoidable. The result was that sharks ate up all the meat of the tuna and Santiago only brought the tuna skeleton back. He was so tired that he slept deeply as soon as he got home, dreaming of lions.

In this story, Santiago was an old and poor widow though he was good at fishing and had so much valuable experience. He only lived on fishing all his life. At long last, he just brought the skeleton back, you may think such a fisherman should be a loser, but this result didn’t mean failing. On the contrary, Hemingway used the skeleton which was the pillar of spirit to strengthen the meaning of the old man’s life. Santiago was described as a perfect person who never gave up.

The boy named Manolion appeared in the beginning and at the end. Even during Santiago’s voyage, he always came to the poor old man’s mind. He was the only person who cared Santiago sincerely, trust Santiago absolutely, and the young boy wanted to be an inheritor of Santiago’s career. Hemingway not only told us the experience of fishing should be spread from generation to generation, but also expected us to admire, to learn from and to carry on the spirit of Santiago. The appearance of Manilion was not by chance, which was arranged by Hemingway. During Santiago’s long voyage, how much he wished the boy could have been with him to drive his loneliness away. Youth is the symbol of energy and hope. Even an old man can be young inside. Lions appeared several times in Santiago’s dreams for they were living in his heart, which showed the spirit of Santiago would never be low.

The coming of the sharks could not be avoided. They can be thought as attack which can swallow your success and happiness. The story tells me to face the problems happened in my life with a heart as wide as ocean. Though the old man was lonely, he was a traveler who walked on the road of realizing his ideals. But he was not alone at the moment, for his will was so firm. The Old Man and the Sea has won the Nobel Prize at last, which is a comfort to the writer.

This winter holiday, I read a book called "the old man and the sea" classic. I benefit a lot from it.

This book is about: an old fisherman, he is called the San Diego. The old fisherman for eighty-four straight days at sea without fish. At first, there is a called manolin told the boy and he a out to sea, but after forty days without a fish the boy was parents arrange to another vessel, because they think that children follow the old man not good luck. Eighty-five days, the old man, the ship is far out in the morning, he unexpectedly caught a larger than the ship QiangYu. The old man and the fish tries to two days, finally fork it in it. But the injured QiangYu at sea for a trace of the bloody left, attract numerous sharks for crazy. The old man struggling to fight with sharks, but back to harbour, QiangYu left with a huge skeleton, the old man to a head of ducking out on land. Children come to see the old man, he thought that the old man was not defeated. That afternoon, the old man in the shack asleep, a dream he saw the lion.

After reading this book, I have a lot of feeling. Especially the old fisherman San Diego, his strong, generous, kind, loving, even in the life of the defeated in the battle, in the face of the inevitable fate, he is still strong in spirit, is "butch". He faced great pressure in the outside world and bad luck strikes, the strong and unyielding, still ahead, or even deadly opponents, though he failed, but keep the human dignity and courage, with the winner of poise.

This story reflects the people in "full of violence and death of real life" expression comes out of courage. Try to think of, an old and poor and alone, or even the old man to death, but to his deadly and these weaknesses, struggle to maintain his identity and dignity, to re-establish his circle in the name, and those who love and he can inheritance of the traditional culture of people keep good relationship. But ultimately the old man a hero's struggle not only save yourself, also inspired those around him, and make them the spiritual to sublimate. The outcome is the San Diego in "full of violence and death of real life" showed the best proof of courage.

This also reminds me of life some of the people, and they may and San Diego, old age, poor and alone, around by the death. But it is very different, it's that they chose dejected, accept, let it be. The end result is caused by: they look down on people, by the destiny tinkering with, again without your chance to blow. In fact, sometimes, just a little, confidence a bit stubborn, it will be possible for his life by entirely different effects. I believe, dares the fate, life and the struggle of the people, no matter how, is the strong!!!!

After reading”Old man and the sea” ’s impressions

It seems to be that Santiago is a poor old man. Hemingway refining the language of their own to shape the image, it can be said that Hemingway didn’t let the elderly achieved success, however has been given under the pressure of the elderly in the image of elegance and fortitude.

The novel told a story about how the old fisherman Santiago struggled with the sea. Santiago gained a huge fish called Marlin after having drifted in the sea for 84 days. It was a fish that is 2 feet longer than the boat and that had dragged his boat for two days before being stabbed to death. It seemed that the old man wasn’t so successful, because he encountered a shark, struggled with the serious environments, even the only spoil——Marlin just left a skeleton. However, the most important thing is that Santiago had never given up for a moment.

In this novel, I am deeply impressed by his persevering. I admire the old fisherman for his steel-like mind and persistence. I think there’s a real young man inside him, although he is at an old age and no longer goes back to his youth. From the strong comparison between the old look and the young heart, we can easily find that it is the positive firm spirits that make us hold our hopes and keep trying all the time and finally guide the roads towards success.

Through the vivid description about the struggle between human and nature, Hemingway expresses his opinion that the courage inside human beings can help us face any failure and overcome any difficulty. In the book, the hero Santiago was beat by the shark, which we regard as a symbol of doom, but he chose to struggle with the fortune instead of losing faith in his life. Just the same as the hero Santiago, all of us will meet with various kinds of difficulties in our daily life, which is a rule of human’s fate. So how can we adjust our attitudes toward these and what should we do with so many problems? The old fisherman tell us the truth——“Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not be defeated”.
