Book Report of <Treasure Island>

Lots of people may read the masterpiece called <Treasure Island>.

This is an exciting adventure story about a poor boy who lives in a small inn, the Admiral Benbow, run by his parents in Black Hill Cove. The boy’s name is Jim Hawkins. One day, unexpectedly, he finds a treasure map which indicates the treasure hidden by the pirates in Skeleton Island. Then Jim, Dr. Livesey, Captain Smollett and his friend, with a group of sailors, set out journey for the treasure. After a short time, some greed sailors who are led by Long John Silver rebel for the map. These two groups fight fiercely. Evil can never prevail over good. Through each justicial person’s effort, Jim and Captain Smollett win the battle. And later then they go back home with the boat filled with treasure.

At the end of the story, Silver runs away with one of the bags of coins, perhaps three or four hundred coins. Captain Smollett no longer goes to sea. Gray, Jim’s friend, saves his money and now is a half-owner and captain of a fine ship. Ben Gunn, who is marooned by pirates, gets a thousand pounds. However, he spends all his money in three weeks. Then he has to beg and luckily is given a job as a gatekeeper when he comes back.

Though I don’t have a chance to adventure as Jim does, the face of Jim often appears in my mind. Jim is a kind-hearted, brave and ambitious boy. He can always find a good way to solve the problems or beat the pirates.

And this book shocks me when I read this part: You are in trouble. Ship lost, treasure lost, men lost. And if you want to know who did it—it was me! I was in the apple barrel the night we saw the island, and I heard every word you said. And the ship? It was me who cut her ropes and killed the men aboard her……Why am I shocked? Because I can’t believe a young boy has such great courage to say those words, and this is admired by me.

There’s someone I admire, and of course, there’s someone I hate, like Silver. What I can only find from the pirates are cruelty and selfishness. He kills people without mercy and even becomes crueler. His sole pursuit of treasure results in his red hand never dry.

Although it is only a novel, the scenes of the novel always come to my mind. It gives me a lesson. We can’t be selfish, because the selfish one only focuses on himself and can commit immorality or even crimes when trying to protect his own interest. We can see the justice of the spiritual wealth from Jim.

What’s more, in my point of view, we should save money in the bank instead of wasting it in our daily life. Wasting money is a bad behavior. The less money we use, the higher spirit level we will have. If we use up our money like Ben Gunn one day, we will be in a big trouble.

As a saying goes, “No pain, No gain”. If we try our best to do everything as Jim, I think we will make more progress in many fields.

Plot: “Treasure island” is a well-known adventure story book. The story happened in eighteenth Century. Jim is a little boy, who was eager and enthusiastic about the sea treasure hunt. Once, he went to the Treasure Island, deal with the pirates and seamen, experienced all sorts of matters------sincere, loyal crew, hypocritical, cruel, between the seamen and witnessed a series of breath-taking stories. Master Jim was a timid, shy child. After his father died, he started the adventure. To begin with, Jim was just a waiter in the cabin, but he had the courage to fight with the enemy, and later recaptured a ship from the pirate, and became the new captain. With courage, a timid and shy boy became a hero. At the end of the story, Jim returned, vowing that he would never hunt again. Since then, Jim had often been troubled by a nightmare. Coins made Jim nightmares, rather than wealth and a better life. So you can see from the story that greed and desire will never bring a wonderful life.

Comments: After reading Treasure Island, I found that it’s important to be brave. Brave has a close relationship with risk-taking. If we want to gain the character of brave, we should be ready to take risk, dare to explore the new area along our lives. In other words, if we want be survive in the new century and be successful, we should be adventurers in the sea of life. It is said that the best stock exchange brokers in America are people who are used to be athletes and not the graduates of finance. Why? They have strong bodies that can do hard work, smart responses, confident to be successful and the most important is that they dare to make key decisions and be ready to take risk. Therefore the parents should give their children the chance to adventure. However, parents in China always MAKE their children to do things. They tell their children what to do, when to do, how to do and why to do. In this way, parents become the masters, while the children，to some extant, become the servants. They may dare not to do anything at all, which absolutely is not the purpose of parents.

1. About the Author.

Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, essayist, and poet, who contributed several classics to the world of children's literature. Stevenson was born in Edinburgh on November 13th 1850. His grandfather and father were civil engineering，made great achievements in the lighthouse construction. And they wished that Stevenson would take over their own enterprise. In 1867, Stevenson received his father’s decree to enter the Edinburgh University to study civil engineering. In fact, he loved literature when he was a child. So he asked his father to study literature, and was refused. But his father let him study law. Since childhood, however, Stevenson's natural inclination had been toward literature; eventually he took up letters seriously, soon making his way into the first rank of contemporaneous writers by the excellence of his style. In 1878 and 1879, he published two works of the theme of travel, since then the continued to publish works. In 1883, he published Treasure Island. The story was praised as The Best Work of Children’s Adventure Story as soon as the work was published. Since then Stevenson had became a famous writer. However, 1894, only 44-year-old Stevenson suddenly suffered from stroke,and died of illness in the Pacific south of the capital, Apia, Western Samoa and was buried in the local mountains overlooking the Pacific. Stevenson had a lot of famous works, such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, A Child’s Garden of Verses and New Arabian Nights.

2. Background.

Treasure island is regard the Pacific islands as the background of the writing, the island is located in the distance Costarica coast 300 miles of sea, was pirates rest stop the 17th century, the pirates will predatory treasure in this outfit handling discharge, buried hidden for this unknown island. It’s sounds very mysterious .It is said that there are at least six place buried treasure, among them, the most attractive treasure-seekers is the treasure of Lima, Peru. The Treasure Island, which is also called the Youth Island, and now is a special administrative region of Cuba. It used to have the name of Treasure Island or also Pine Island. In the long 4 years of Spanish's ruling, this place is the paradise gathered by the world-famous pirates of the Caribbean , those who hide the wealth they robbed in the cave of the island, and it has the origin of the name.

3. Main Idea.

In the eighteenth century, British sailor boy Jim got the legendary map of Treasure Island from dying bill. In support of the local squire, they organized a team of expedition went to Treasure Island. The pirate leader Silver boarded the ship acted as a cook and his a group of men also acted as sailors on board. On the Treasure Island, Silver and his men occupied the ship by launching rebellion. The sailor boy saved the good men three times. Later Silver conflicted with the other pirates and decided to cooperate with doctor and Ben to deal with the other pirates. Finally, the good men gained the treasure. From the whole novel, we can see that the main character Jim originally was a timid and shy boy, however , Jim has obviously became a little hero after going through this adventure. As a kid, he saved the good persons three times, which showing Jim’s amazing resourcefulness and courage.

Though Jim is a kid, his courage and loyalty is admirable. Even though in face of the ferocious pirates, he can admit that what he had done, and he adhered to stand his ground that would rather die than cahoots with the pirates. In addition, it is also admirable that Jim kept his words. When Jim and the doctor had a conversation, Jim could run away. But Jim did not do it, because he had sworn to the pirate Silver. He gave up the chance to escape. I guess even the adult can not do this in order to keep his words. It can be said that Jim is a real man.

4. What can we learn from this novel.

In addition, to the surprising and exciting plot of the novel is that the central idea is worth thinking. The real intention of the novel tells us the love of humanity and justice often over evil. The main character Jim is the representation of justice, and finally he won, while the pirate Silver who is the representation of evil, finally was spurned by people. Besides, I can feel the money has a great temptation to human. In the novel money actually had changed the feelings between people, corroded the world and everything. Of course, money itself is innocent, but the material and greedy heart that drives people pursue the money by all bad means.

As an old saying goes: Gentleman’s love of money in a proper way. We should hold a right attitude toward money. At the same time, we need to know that bland pursuit of money finally become vain and greed and the desire will never bring us a better life.

Treasure Island, the masterpiece of the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson Robert Louis stevenson, Scottish novelist, essayist, and poet, who contributed several classics to the world of children's literature.

Stevenson was born on Nov. 13, 1850, in Edinburgh, the son of an engineer, and studied engineering and then studied law at the University of Edinburgh. Since childhood, however, Stevenson was inclined to literature; eventually he took to writing seriously, soon making his way into the first rank of writers by the excellence of his style. The novel depicts that, in a seaside village in south-west England. Jim Hawkins was the young son of the owners of the Admiral Benbow Inn. An old , strong ,nut-brown seaman named Billy Bones lodged at the inn .Afterwards, Jim Hawkins acquired the map that conceive the mysterious treasure island accidentally ,which induced some pirates’ coming and inspired local landlord Squire Trelawney and local Dr. Livesey. Together, Squire Trelawney immediately planned to start a sailing boat to hunt for the treasure, with the help and assistance of Dr. Livesey and Jim.

Going to Bristol, Trelawney bought a schooner named Hispaniola, hired a Captain Smollett, and retained Silver, and a cook, then Silver helped Trelawney to hire the rest of his crewman. When they approached their destination, Jim crawled into the ship's apple barrel to get some apples. While inside, he overhears Silver talking secretly with some of the other crewmen. Silver admitted that he was Captain Flint's quartermaster and that several of the other crew were also once Flint's men, and planned to kill others. When they reach Treasure Island, the bulk of Silver's men went ashore immediately. Then Jim destroy the plot .Meanwhile, Trelawney, Livesey, and

their men overpowered the few pirates left aboard the Hispaniola. Eventually, Jim and others got the treasure and went back home.

Even though I can’t take adventure with them on myself, but the upright appearance of Jim always appears in my mind and lingers on forever. Coming first is our Jim Hawkins, who is the narrator of this story. He is my favorite character, because from Jim, we can see almost all of the noble personalities of human nature: the braveness, the honesty, the kindness, the good faith, the justice, the curiosity and so on. Jim is always brave kind-hearted and gracious, especially he can defeat the pirates in any plot .He had more changes in characteristic. In the beginning of the novel, Jim is a timid boy. However, in the end of the novel, it was so incredible that Jim had become so matured. He conquered pirate with wit and wisdom, gained the big schooner and saved a lot of people. Although Jim is a child in age he had become an adult in character. During Jim’s growing process, Jim’s identity awareness gradually was increased and became rational. It’s obvious that Jim had an obvious boundary from pirates or crime. He defined himself a honest boy. For Jim his identity was more important than the pain in body. From that point .we can see that Jim was forming a kind of identity, confidence, and matured awareness which would play an important role in his development of life. So this is the character who is definitely the most admirable one.

What’s more, the author successfully depicts him by writing the true psychology activities of a teenager. For example, the sentence “my curiosity, in a sense, was stronger than my fear, showing the real behavior of a young country lad with a keen eye for excitement and an urge for adventure.”

There are reasons for Stevenson portrays the child as the perfect character. In my point of view, firstly, he wants to settle Jim as the model for youngsters. He wants the young to learn some good qualities of Jim, which will benefit them forever. Secondly, he wants to educate the adults by satirizing their evil personalities compared with Jim. We can say that the voyage is an impressive lesson taught not by words, but by

behaviors. The adults’ greed, their cruelty, their craft, is all caused by the “treasure”. So this is what Stevenson wants to tell us. That is, we should not be driven by money. The society calls for sincerity, kindness, and beauty. We can come to this conclusion , lightness can always scatter the darkness. From the story, we can find Jim’s bravery and wisdom scatter the darkness.If he was afraid or hesitated, maybe he would have died . Where there is evil,there is justice. Like most plots in novels, eventually lightness scatters the darkness, and makes a striking success . Overall, the novel is an inspiring story,we can learn something from the book and warn ourselves from time to time.

I have admiring characters while I resent some character in this novel ,for example, Silver for representative's character, represented evil, they killed others for money, while they didn’t fell guilty for his guilt and went wilder. Then they decided to kill other persons, tending to control the sailing boat and seize money. why so many people are crazy about money or treasure? They can’t control their desire All in all, they discarded humanity and nature . And I think this book can still tell us something in such a realistic society where some people are chasing money without moral value. All in all, we should learn from Jim, especially his humanity , kindness ,braveness and curiosity which play essential roles in one’s personality .

Hence be humanistic, and we should fill this world with humanity and kindness .Be brave, and bravery is the first step of success. Be curious, curiosity is the spring of discovery. Be strong , and we should enable us to have mighty strength which can lead to oue success.

Therefore, be humanistic, be brave , be curious ,and be strong .

I have learned many things from him, like brave, resource, accommodating and so on. If we also have the spirit that Jim has, many difficult questions must have been already solved.

What I can only find from the pirates are cruelty and selfishness. But Silver is even more cruel hearted. He kills people without mercy and his hands are full of blood. His eyes are green. He reminds me of the selfish one who only focuses on himself and can be immorality and even crimes when trying to protect his own interest. Money sometimes can be the power when we are working. And sometimes can be the most evil thing in the world. As long as we make a balance between money and desire, money can be the most beautiful thing in the world. As a saying goes, “No pain, No gain”.If we try our best to do things like Jim, I think we will make more progress in many fields.

最近，我读了一本著名探险故事书，它便是《金银岛》了，是19世纪英国作家史蒂文森的成名作，也是一本举世公认的世界名著。下面我先介绍下作者史蒂文森：史蒂文森，1850年诞生于英国的爱丁堡，祖父和父亲都是深孚名望的灯塔建筑师。他曾经遵从父亲的意愿，进入爱丁堡大学学习土木工程，因为和自己兴趣不符，于是说服了父亲，改学法律。毕业后，他并没有从事律师工作，反而从二十三岁起，陆续发表长短篇小说、评论集、旅游见闻以及诗歌等。由于文字优美洗炼，深受读者喜爱。除了《金银岛》以外，他还有《绑票》、《化身博士》等脍炙人口的作品。史蒂文森的《金银岛》对后世的影响也非常大，《金银岛》在好莱坞已经被数次改拍成电影电视，依旧十分受欢迎。可以这么说：如果说中国的孩子是看着《西游记》长大的，那么美国的孩子就是看着《金银岛》长大的，《金银岛》可算是有史以来最好看的海盗小说。《金银岛》的创作动机，完全出于偶然。有一天，史蒂文森站在儿子洛伊身后，看他画一张想象的地图，忽然，一些奇怪的名词闪过脑际：体骨凫、望远镜山、红十字架、宝藏、大帆船„„接着，他又仿佛看见几个人从地图上的森林中跑出来，四处寻找藏金。于是他决定把这些名词串联在一起，写成一篇海上冒险小说——《金银岛》。史蒂文森在情节的安排上，更是处处暗藏玄机；尤其在同一艘船上安插一批觊觎宝藏的海盗，把故事的张力推到极致，紧紧地抓住读者的情绪。除了情节曲折、变化离奇的趣味外，书中人物刻画也相当成功，对于水手的生活、海盗的行踪，尽皆栩栩如生，活灵活现。而其中独脚厨师希尔佛的角色塑造，尤其使人印象深刻。他有时凶残，有时温和；有时充满暴戾之气，有时又颇具绅士风度；有时沉稳冷静，有时又贪

故事发生在十八世纪，杰夫．何金斯是一个小男孩，他渴望并且热衷於出海寻宝。有一次，他到了金银岛寻宝，与海盗、水手打交道，亲身体验到船员之间真诚、忠实、虚伪、残暴的种种现象，目睹了一幕幕令人惊心动魄的故事。 读了这本探险故事，使我感触良多。主人翁杰夫．何金斯原是一个胆小、害羞的孩子。父亲去世后，他便开始了探险。在探险之旅中，初时杰夫只是一个船舱裏的服务生，但他却勇於与敌人搏斗，后来更从海盗手中夺回大船，并自命为新任船长。虽然杰夫．何金斯经常易於冲动，但他所表现出来的非凡勇气和过人胆识，足以令我佩服不已。杰夫．何金斯凭著勇气与胆识，由一个胆小怕事的小男孩变成一位夺回大船的英雄。而我们有时遇到难题，便自乱阵脚，不努力探讨解决的办法。试想想，若我们也有杰夫那种勇於尝试和敢於探索的精神，许多难题不是都能迎刃而解吗？

在故事结尾，杰夫返航后，并没提到他分到多少财宝，他反而发誓再也不去寻宝了。还时常受到噩梦困扰，梦见大海和金币。金币令杰夫做噩梦，而不是富贵梦；一味追求物质的满足，最终只是徒劳；贪婪和欲望永远不会带来美好的生活。如果人人都明白这个道理，恐怕便不会发生一些野心家为争夺名利而不择手段的事情了。

这本书里，从头到尾都围绕着一个冒险故事旋转，在这里面一个少年出生在一个贫穷的家里，以开着酒店维持生计。那个少年就是主人公吉姆.霍金斯。他无意之中发现了老海盗藏着金银财宝的荒岛地图。于是，他与别的朋友商量，他的朋友带着一群水手踏上了探宝之旅。但是不久，他们船中的一群水手叛变，就此双方的激烈对战开始，他们与敌人展开了惊心动魄搏斗。最后，由于各个船员的

努力，胜利落向了吉姆这一方，不久，他们载着金银财宝兴高采烈的满载而归回到了家乡。

虽然我没有亲身去到那儿冒险，但是在我的脑海中，总能浮出一丝景象，吉姆他那正直的面孔总能出现，在他身边他是显得那么的高尚、善良、勇敢，他总是能制服海盗，取得胜利，他是多么勇敢！当我听到他这句话时震撼得全身发抖，如这一段„„我们看见陆地的那天夜里，我就在苹果桶里，我听到了你——约翰，还有你——迪克.约翰逊，还有汉兹，他现在是在海底了，我还在一小时内，把你们说的每句话都报告了。至于纵帆船吗，使我割断了船的缆索，是我杀死了你们留在船上的人，是„„就当我看到这些的时候我心里十分震撼一个少年能有那么大的勇气说出这些，这让我很佩服。

当然我有佩服的人也有愤恨的人，例如西尔弗为代表的人物，在他们的身上体现的都是虚伪、非分、邪恶的，他们为了自己而杀死别人的性命，他们没有为自己所做的事情感到愧疚，而是更猖狂。越想到金钱脑子空空，仅剩下杀人的念头，想一个接一个的把人喉管割破，横行霸道。让我的脑子里全部浮现出他们带着一双凶恶的眼睛恐怖的狞笑拿着水手短刀疯狂的杀了很多人，只为了自己的利益而丧失人性。

虽然，这篇小说以假乱真，但是他的作品中体现善良与邪恶之间的尖锐对抗，所以我觉得故事警告着我们干什么都不能自私，因为那是在你人生路上的错路，而吉姆他们身上体现是一种正义为代表的精神财富。
