Mattel Inc. is recalling 4.4 million Polly Pocket toys with magnets(磁铁)after some of them

caused serious injuries to children who swallowed magnets that fell off.

Tiny magnets inside the toys may fall off without being noticed by parents and babysitters. The

magnets can be swallowed or placed in children’s noses or ears. When more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestine perforation(肠内穿孔)which can be deadly.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC)received 170 reports of the small magnets

coming out of these recalled toys. There were three reports of serious injuries to children who swallowed more than one magnet. All three suffered intestinal perforations that required operation.

A 2-year-old child stayed in hospital for seven days and a 7-year-old child was hospitalized for 12 days. An 8-yeal-old child was also hospitalized.

The recalled Polly Pocket toys contain plastic dolls and accessories(附件)that have small

magnets. The magnets measure one-eighth inch in diameter and are fixed in the hands and feet of some dolls, and even in the plastic clothing, hairpieces and other accessories to help the pieces stay on the doll or the doll’s house.

The model number is printed on the bottom of the largest pieces on some of the toys. Contact

Mattel if you cannot find a model number on your product to determine if it is part of the recall. Polly Pocket magnetic toys currently sold in stores are not included in this recall. The model numbers included in the recall are: B2632, B3158, B3201, B7118, G8605, H1537, H1538 and H3211. The toys were on sales in department stores and toy stores from May 2006 through September 2009 for between $15 and $30.

Consumers should immediately take these recalled toys away from children and contact Mattel

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any

clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?

Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is

because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, In this article, I’ll describe three no-win situations that commonly arise between teens and

parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no-win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—he point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.

35. Why does the author compare the parent-teen war to a border conflict?

A. Both can continue for generations.

B. Both are about where to draw the line.

C. Neither has any clear winner.

D. Neither can be put to an end.

36. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.

B. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.

C. The teens accuse their parents of misleading them.

D. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.

37. Parents and teens want to be right because they want to ______.

A. give orders to the other

B. know more than the other

C. gain respect from the other

D. get the other to behave properly

38. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

A. Causes for the parent –teen conflicts.

B. Examples of the parent –teen war.

C. Solutions for the parent –teen problems.

D. Future of the parent-teen relationship.

C

A new study has found no evidence that sunscreen, commonly used to reduce the risk of skin

cancer, actually increases the risk.

Researchers from the University of Iowa based their findings on a review of 18 earlier studies

that looked at the association between sunscreen use and melanoma(黑素瘤). They said that they

found in studies that had reported associations between sunscreen use and higher risk of melanoma.

Most health experts believe that by protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer, which is increasing in incidence(发生率)faster than any other cancer in the United States.

But questions have been raised about sunscreen and whether it may have the opposite effect, perhaps by allowing people to remain exposed to the sun longer without burning.

The researchers said that among the problems with some earlier studies is that they often failed to take into account that those people most at risk for skin cancer—people with fair skin and freckles(雀斑), for example—are more likely to use sunscreen. As a result, it may appear that sunscreen users get cancer more often.

The studies, which generally relied on volunteers to recall their sunscreen use, were also unable to prove how well the products had been applied, said the new study.

39. The underlined word “flaws” in the 2nd paragraph most probably means .

A. evidences B. facts C. faults D. failures

40. People with fair skin and freckles A. seldom use sunscreen B. are more in danger of skin cancer

C. can be free from the harm of the sun D. often expose themselves to the sun

41. We can learn from the passage that .

A. sunscreen users get skin cancer more often

B. the volunteers have proved the effect of sunscreen

C. the new study was based on the experiences of volunteers

D. the number of skin cancer patients is increasing in America

42. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

A. Sunscreen to Prevent Skin Cancer B. Sunscreen to Increase Skin Cancer

C. Skin Cancer Caused by Sunscreen D. Skin Cancer Caused by Freckles

D

Celebrity(名人) has become one of the most important representatives of popular culture. Fans used to be crazy about a specific film, but now the public tends to base its consumption(消费) on the interest of celebrity attached to any given product. Besides, fashion magazines have almost abandoned the practice of putting models on the cover because they don’t sell nearly as well as famous faces. As a result, celebrities have realized their unbelievably powerful market potential, moving from advertising for others’ products to developing their own.

Celebrity clothing lines aren’t a completely new phenomenon, but in the past they were typically aimed at the ordinary consumers, and limited to a few TV actresses. Today they’re started by first-class stars whose products enjoy equal fame with some world top brands. The most successful start-ups have been those by celebrities with specific personal style. As celebrities become more and more experienced at the market, they expand their production scale rapidly, covering almost all the products of daily life.

However, for every success story, there’s a related warning tale of a celebrity who overvalued his consumer appeal. No matter how famous the product’s origin is, if it fails to impress consumers with its own qualities, it begins to resemble an exercise in self-promotional marketing. And once the initial(最初的) attention dies down, consumer interest might fade, loyalty(忠诚) returning to tried-and-true labels.

答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

We all have our ways of marking time. As a photographer, my life is measured from one story to the next. My oldest son was born in the middle of a long story about the Endangered Species Act. My daughter came along with a pack of gray wolves.

Twenty stories later, though, it’s the story in Alaska that I’ll remember best. It was the story about the loss of wilderness — and the story during which my wife Kathy got cancer. That’s the one that made time stand still. I stopped taking pictures on the day when she found that tumor (肿瘤). Cruelly, it was Thanksgiving. By Christmas, she had become very weak. Some days she was so sick she couldn’t watch TV.

Early examination saves time. But ours was not early. By the time you can feel it yourself, it’s often bigger than the doctor want it to be.

Cancer is a thief. It steals time. Our days are already short with worry. Then comes this terrible disease, unfair as storm at harvest time. But cancer also has the power to change us, for good. We learn to simplify, enjoying what we have instead of feeling sorry for what we don’t. Cancer even made me a better father. My work had made me a stranger to my three kids. But now I pay attention to what really matters. This is not a race. This is a new way of life and new way of seeing, all from the cancer.

In the end each of us has so little time. We have less of it than we can possibly imagine. And even though it turns out that Kathy’s cancer has not spread, and her prognosis (诊断) is good. We try to make it all count now, enjoying every part of every day.

I’ve picked up my camera again. I watch the sky, searching for beautiful light. When winter storms come, Kathy and I gather our children and take the time to catch snowflakes (雪花) on our tongues. After all, this is good. This is what we’re living for.

31. As a photographer, the author used to ______.

A. leave his daughter with a pack of gray wolves

B. express his love for his family in a special way

C. miss a great many important historical moments

D. devote much more to his career than his family

32. Why did the author decide to stop taking pictures?

A. To cure his own disease. B. To spend more time with his wife.

C. To seek a better position. D. To leave the wilderness alone.

33. What is the biggest change the cancer has brought to the author?

A. He treasured every bit of time with his family.

B. He has become a stranger to his children.

C. He takes his work more seriously.

D. He focuses more on medical care.

34. The author and his family catch snowflakes on their tongues probably because

______.

A. the snowflakes taste very good

You put a great deal of effort into reaching the college of your choice. It’s time to get started. But what’s next? Beginning college can be an exciting but awkward time. Follow these tips to adjust to your new life rapidly and make the most of your college experience.

● To save time and money, use the college’s bus system. Taking the bus to school is quick, easy and free in most college towns. You won’t have to locate or afford a place to park either. It’s also a good way to be environmentally aware.

● Save pennies on books by waiting until class starts. You might not even need all of the recommended books. New textbooks cost an arm and a leg. Try buying used textbooks — it’s a surefire way to save money and serves the purpose as well. ● Do never look at college life as an endless series of parties and social activities. But there is a whole lot more to college if you’re serious about graduating. Having a good college experience is all about balancing work and fun. ● Be aware that your living environment can largely affect your academic success. If the dorm doesn’t suit you, consider living at home with your family or renting your own apartment. The best location for your studies isn’t always your dorm. Find a quiet area, like the library, to do your work. Alternatively, buy some headphones that block out noise.

● Be mindful of your diet. Make healthy food choices and watch what you eat. Avoid foods that are processed or high in sugar. The “freshman 15” is real. Many college students gain at least 15 pounds during their freshmen year.

● While electives (选修课) can be helpful when figuring out your major, you shouldn’t entirely rely on them. Clubs and other organizations exist around. Get involved. Make sure, though, that you still have time to study. Having too much on your plate can hurt your grades.

35. Which of the following ideas can be financially wise?

A. Driving your own car. B. Buying used books.

C. Renting an apartment. D. Attending activities.

36. In the text, freshmen are repeatedly warned against ______.

A. academic failures B. physical problems

C. traffic accidents D. social activities

37. The “freshman 15” tells the fact that some freshmen ______.

A. attend limited activities on campus

B. have little regular physical exercise

C. focus less on their academic work

D. take relaxed attitudes to their diets

38. The underlined phrase “having too much on your plate” probably refers to ______.

A. using too much money for meals

B. eating too many unhealthy foods

C. taking part in too many after-class activities

D. taking an elective that has too many students

Cultural Center Adds Classes for Young Adults

The Allendale Cultural Center has expanded its arts program to include classes for young adults. Director Leah Martin announced Monday that beginning in September, three new classes will be offered to the Allendale community. The course titles will be Yoga for Teenagers; Hip Hop Dance: Learning the Latest Moves; and Creative Journaling for Teens: Discovering the Writer Within. The latter course will not be held at the Allendale Cultural Center but instead will meet at the Allendale Public Library.

Staff member Tricia Cousins will teach the yoga and hip hop classes. Ms. Cousins is an accomplished choreographer (舞蹈教师) as well as an experienced dance educator. She has an MA in dance education from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she wrote a thesis on the pedagogical (教学法的) effectiveness of dance education. The journaling class will be taught by Betsy Milford. Ms. Milford is the head librarian at the Allendale Public Library as well as a columnist for the professional journal Library Focus.

The courses are part of the Allendale Cultural Center’s Project Teen, which was initiated by Leah Martin, Director of the Cultural Center. According to Martin, this project is a direct result of her efforts to make the center a more essential part of the Allendale community. Over the last several years, the number of people who have visited the cultural center for classes or events has steadily declined. Project Teen is primarily funded by a generous grant from The McGee Arts Foundation, an organization devoted to bringing arts programs to young adults. Martin oversees the Project Teen board, which consists of five board members. Two board members are students at Allendale’s Brookdale High School; the other three are adults with backgrounds in education and the arts.

The creative journaling class will be cosponsored by Brookdale High School, and students who complete the class will be given the opportunity to publish one of their journal entries in Pulse, Brookdale’s student literary magazine. Students who complete the hip hop class will be eligible to participate in the Allendale Review, an annual concert sponsored by the cultural center that features local actors, musicians, and dancers. All classes are scheduled to begin immediately following school dismissal, and transportation will be available from Brookdale High School to the Allendale Cultural Center and the Allendale Public Library. For more information about Project Teen, contact the cultural center’s programming office at 988-0099 or drop by the office after June 1 to pick up a fall course catalog. The office is located on the third floor of the Allendale Town Hall.

39. Which of the following statements is correct?

A. Tricia Cousins will teach two of the new classes.

B. The new classes will begin on June 1.

The slavery drama “12 Years a Slave” won the Academy Award for best picture on Sunday, making history as the first movie from a black director to win the film industry‟s highest honor in 86 years of the Oscars. Can anyone tell me your ideas about this movie? —Great Martin

“12 Years a Slave is a surprisingly underwhelming movie. It is more of a string of pictures about several heartless and evil white men(and women) who are just

mean without the motivation of running a plantation on their minds. There is very little character development and most of the film relies on what the audience already knows and feels about slavery. “ —Gemini Jeff

„„Never have I been stunned into an emotional silence after watching a film in the theater. I‟ve come out of films before thinking, „My god, that was unbelievable‟, like when I saw The Lord of the Rings for the first time, but this film just hits you on another level entirely. You sit there after it‟s over, wondering if what you‟ve just experienced is real. The day after, you feel the same. “

—Paul Johnson

“This movie is just an average movie about slavery. Are you kidding me, segregation movies are a dime a dozen and this movie beat out Gravity for Golden Globes? Gravity has never been done before. 12 Years a Slave I watched once and will never watch again. I watched Gravity 5 times and still love it. ‟‟ —Emma Smith “This movie was realistic and engaging at every second. Even the dramatic pauses were worthwhile and definitely not a waste of time. The script inferred and hinted at events rather than just plain saying them, and that was genius. Outstanding photography, amazing special effects and the acting is top notch. There were a few people that walked out during some scenes. What a shame!”

—April

31. The main purpose of Great Martin‟s writing is _____.

A. to give a brief introduction of the movie

B. to share his own opinions with others

Heading off to college this year? Here are some fashion tips from our experts you should keep in mind:

Dress to impress: Stylist and business consultant Daniela Smith says, “Girls should keep in mind that your college professors will often be the bridge that connects you to your future career and your classmates will become your professional network. You don’t need to dress like you’re going to the office, but you should display an ability to properly present yourself with appropriate maturity and confidence, and look put together.”

Logo mania (品牌狂热症): Wearing the logos of brands aimed at younger customers physically identifies you as part of that age group, so consider the targeted age group of the stores you shop at. It’s tempting to load up on logos, especially well-known logos that signify high-end brands. But consider this: college is a time of self-discovery, a chance to develop your own personal style. Instead of wearing logos head to toe, “walking advertisement”-style, why not express who you really are?

Wear real pants! The combination of leggings and baggy shirts is all too common on college campuses. Smith points out that leggings, yoga pants, and sweatpants are entirely unacceptable in public unless you’re exercising. Although leggings worn as pants are a common trend among high school and college girls, they are not an

appropriate choice for daywear. As a young woman, your style choice should begin to

A woman whose sports car was stolen with her dog in it put up notices all over the area that made it clear getting back her pet was more important than her car. “Whoever did this can keep my car. Please let Benjerman come home,” the notice said.

It is not known whether the thief showed any pity, but almost 30 hours after the 1 pm theft Friday, Kimberly Atkins of Dover and Benjerman,a 12-year-old black retriever, were reunited after police located them in Barrington. “He’s hungry and dirty, but he’s very happy to be home,” Atkins said.

The car was found at about 5 pm Saturday off Route 125 in a swampy area frequented by off-the-road cars and dirty bikes. However, the police couldn’t control Benjerman, and they had to call Atkins to come and get him.

Atkins said the thief cared for Benjerman a little by providing him with some dry cat food. She believed Benjerman ended up drinking some muddy water in the area. She said they have been together for nearly 11 years after she took him back from a society shelter in Dallas, Texas.

Before Benjelman was found, Atkins and several friends put up notices all over the city and in Somersworth. They also contacted animal shelters, throughout southern New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

The notice stated there was a reward, and also that the dog needed medication.

Any caller could remain anonymous(匿名的).

Atkins had parked the car outside a hardware store with the keys inside and gone in to rent a carpet cleaner. “It was l0 minutes and I came out and my car was gone along with Benjerman in broad daylight,” Atkins said. There are 287 tube stations in London that accept the Oyster Card, with a high concentration in central London. If you are staying anywhere in central London, there will be a tube station less than 10 minutes away.

The Transport for London website offers a tube station search facility to find the nearest subway station to any location in the city. When you find a tube station, you can easily locate the closest bus stop by using the comparison bus-tube maps at the station’s entrance.

How to Be a Winner

Sir Steven Redgrave

Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals

―In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes(糖尿病). Believing my career was over, I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was it -- the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believed in myself. to achieving them.‖

And when you are outdoors where there is no Wi-Fi, such as in the park or at the beach, having 3G service allows you to stay connected.

It seems that lots of us have Internet coverage everywhere we go. So why have mobile companies around the world lately been so enthusiastic about a new term, ―4G‖? First, you need to know that the letter ―G‖ stands for ―generation‖. Even if you have no idea what 4G is, at least you can figure out that it is a step up from 3G since it‘s the latest generation of mobile Internet service.

Unlike broadband, mobile Internet uses the same signal towers that provide voice service to your cellphone, which means wherever you can make phone calls with your cellphone you also have an Internet connection.

they don‘t carry as much information as broadband does, making opening websites and downloading music slower than they are on a Wi-Fi connection. This is why mobile connections have been constantly upgraded since the first generation was launched back in the 1980s.

According to BBC, 4G is five to seven times faster than current 3G network speeds, almost as fast as home broadband. Because of this, 4G is widely suited for services like video downloading, mapping, online shopping and even video conferencing.

To achieve the high speeds, network companies have to spend a lot of money on building new signal towers, which will eventually lead to a higher phone bill if you switch to 4G,, and you will also have to get a new phone with 4G capacity.

39. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
