第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,共30分)

A

It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea touching the shore gently.

My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him. On the road to the harbor we could see the terrible destruction on the coast, but the harbor itself was in fairly good shape. After all, it was protected by the arms of a bay (海湾) that had only one tiny channel to the sea. As we got on board, we noticed two big humps (脊背) in the distance.

On approaching them, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn’t believe it—there aren’t any whales along the coast here. The storm must have driven them across the ocean in the bay, in which the still water was so badly polluted that nothing could survive.

The little baby whale—actually as big as our boat—was obviously stuck and could not move. The mother dived under the water and came up suddenly, making big whirlpools(漩涡) and waves. “She’s trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side,” my father said. At this point, my father moved our boat in a semicircle to the other side and, heading the boat toward the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes the big hump turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They struggled in their desperate attempts to escape but missed the exit and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them towards the bay channel. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe—and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water flowing straight form the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the distance.

In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonder animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Nearly four decades later, I still look back fondly to that golden day at sea.

66. The author says “I’m so glad I did.” (in Para.2) because ________________.

A. he saw the whole process of fishing B. he enjoyed the beauty of the calm sea

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, “Mum, you must come and see the daffodils (水仙花) before they are over.” I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Lake Arrowhead. “I will go next Tuesday,” I promised, a little unwillingly, on her third call.

The next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn’s house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, “Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible (看不见的) in the cloud and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see!”

My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this weather all the time, Mum. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.”

After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read“Daffodil Garden”.

We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most beautiful sight! There were five acres of flowers! “But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn. “It's just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “That's her home,” Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio (庭院), we saw a poster. “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking” was the headline.

The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs (鳞茎),” it read. The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.”

I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than fifty years before, had begun—one bulb at a time—to bring the beauty and joy to the mountain top.

Nothing is too difficult if you put your heart into it. B. We must put the interests of others above our own. C. We can change the world by growing flowers. D. Why 33% of the households in the USA have cats? And how do you explain why there are 16 million more pet cats than dogs? Yes, cats are bearable. Yes, they can grow up to be good mousers and are very entertaining to watch. And yes, cats are independent and don’t require as much care as dogs. But research shows cats can also be caretakers for us and our families, improve our health and teach us and our children to be kinder, gentler souls.

Theodora Wesselman is 94 and has lived for the past two years with her elderly cat, Cleo, at Tiger Place, a retirement community in Columbia, Mo. Their lasting friendship is a classic example of how humans and animals can become family and look out for each other.

Wesselman visits other residents, and her children stop by, but Cleo is her best friend, according to her.

“She sleeps on her own pillow right beside mine,” Wesselman says. “In the morning, she pecks on my cheek to wake me up. It’s really sweet. I pet her, tell her I love her and take her to the kitchen to prepare her food.”

Research shows that being able to care for a pet improves our mood and encourages us to take care of ourselves, says Rebecca Johnson, director of the University of Missouri’s Research Center for 25. According to the context, where do you think the sentence “They start and end the day together.” should appear in the passage?

A. At the end of para.1. B. At the beginning of para.2. C. At the end of para.3. D. At the beginning of para. 4.

26. Which of the following words best describe the author’s attitude towards keeping pet cats? A. Favorable. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.

27. Why does the author take 94-year-old Theodora Wesselman as an example in the passage? A. To show that the elderly like Theodora Wesselman in the USA have pet cats. B. To suggest humans and pet cats can be caretakers for each other.

C. Because Theodora Wesselman has been living with a pet cat for the past two years. D. Because Theodora Wesselman pets her cat Cleo and tells her she loves her. 28. What does “to roll out the welcome mat for pets” in the last paragraph imply? A. To give a special welcome to pets. B. To make the welcome mat for pets.

2

C. To open out the welcome mat for pets to sleep. D. To wrap the welcome mat to make room for pets.

Each Indian was supposed to keep his birth name until he was old enough to earn one for himself.【黑龙江省哈师大附中高一下学期期末考试英语试卷答案】

But his playmates would always give him a name of their own. No matter what his parents called him, his childhood friends would use the name they had chosen. Often it was not pleasing, such as Bow Legs or Bad Boy. But sometimes a name fit so well that the youngster found it difficult to shake it off. If he could not earn a better one from a war later, he could be stuck with a name like Bow Legs for the rest of his life.

The Indian earned his real name when he was old enough for his first fight against the enemy. His life name depended on how he acted during this first battle. When he returned from the war, the whole tribe would gather and observe the ceremony in which he would be given his name by the chief. If he had done well, he would get a good name. Otherwise he might be called Crazy Wolf or Man-Afraid-Of-a-Horse. So an Indian’s name told his record or described what kind of man he was.

A man was given many chances to improve his name, however. If in a later battle he was brave in fighting against the enemy, he was given a better name. Some of our great fighters had as many as twelve names—all good and each better than the last.

An Indian’s names belonged to him for the rest of his life. No one else could use them. Even he himself could not give them away because names were given by the tribe, not the family. So no man could pass on his name unless the chief and the tribe asked him to do so.

Sometimes an Indian would be asked to give his name to a son who had performed a noticeable deed. I know of only three or four times when this happened. It is the greatest honor for a person—the honor of assuming(承担) his father’s name.

32. An Indian could be given the second name by ________________.

A. his father B. the enemy C. the chief of the tribe D. his childhood friends 33. The greatest honor an Indian could earn was ________________.

A. a victory in his first battle against the enemy B. a name given by the chief

C. a ceremony to get his real name D. the right to use his father’s name 34. If an Indian had more than ten names, it meant that __________________.

A. many people in the tribe liked him B. he was a great fighter

C. he had a lot of friends D. he had fought in fewer than ten battles 35. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. The names given by the playmates of an Indian were usually not pleasant. B. The life name of an Indian was earned in battle.

C. An Indian could throw away his birth name when his playmates gave him one. D. The Indians themselves were not allowed to give their names away. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult. Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult now!

With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about making choices. In this way you can make healthy balanced decisions. You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you.

Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself.

It is also perfectly natural at this time for you to spend more time with your friends than with your family. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens.

This period is a part of the life cycle. There are some people who will be with you throughout life’s journey. There will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not even see all of your classmates again.

3

You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely! A. Choose your friends wisely. B. They will help shape the future. C. They may seem to happen quickly.

D. You will probably want to be independent.

E. You may appreciate what you have in your own life.

F. The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. G. Your family have been with you since you came into this world.

In my opinion, having idols is not a bad thing. However, we should make it clear who are the real “heroes”. As far as I am concerned, the real heroes are those who are making the most contributions to our society, such as teachers, doctors and scientists. As young students we should learn from them. Only in this way can we become useful men and be real popular stars in the future.

第二部分 阅读理解 (共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30 分)

A

Our “Mommy and Me” time began two years ago. My next-door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down. “I wish I could take one of my children out alone,” said Christie.

Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I’ll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I’ll take someone out.

The children were extremely quick to accept the idea of “Mommy and Me” time. Christie’s daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. “She’s like a different child when there’s no one else around,” Christie shared with me quickly. With her mother all to herself, McKenzie didn’t have to make an effort to gain attention.

Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone times. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering(口吃的)son, Tom, doesn’t stutter once during our activities since he doesn’t have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who’s always a follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together.

The “Mommy and Me” time allows us to be simply alone and away with each child — talking, sharing, and

laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves(应得到)to be an only child at least once in a

while.

11. What is the text mainly about?

A. The experience of the only child being with mother.

B. The advantage of spending time with one child at a time.

C. The happy life of two families. D. The basic needs of children.

12. Right after McKenzie came back, the other children were ______.

A. happy B. curious C. regretful D. friendly

13. What is one of the changes the author finds in her children?

【黑龙江省哈师大附中高一下学期期末考试英语试卷答案】

A. The daughter acts like a leader. B. Sam holds her hand more often.

C. The boys become better followers. D. Tom has less difficulty in speaking.

14. The author seems to believe that ______.

A. having brothers and sisters is fun B. it’s tiring to look after three children

C. every child needs parents’ full attention D. parents should watch others’ children

Growing up in Philadelphia, Lieberman started cooking with his stay-at-home dad when he was seven. His

food-loving family had two kitchens, and he quickly learned what was the best way to bake his cakes. Lieberman

improved his kitchen skills greatly during a year abroad before college, learning from a cook in Italy and studying

local specialties(地方特色菜)in Germany, Spain and France. At Yale, he was known for throwing dinner parties,

single-handedly frying and baking while mixing drinks for dozens of friends. Just for fun, he and some friends

decided to tape a show named Campus Cuisine about his cooking. Lieberman was a real college student showing

his classmates how to do things like making drinks out of dining-hall fruit. That helped the show become very

popular among the students. They would stop Lieberman after classes to ask for his advice on cooking. Tapes of the

show were passed around, with which his name went beyond the school and finally to the Food Network.

Food Network producer Flay hopes the young cook will find a place on the network television. He says

Lieberman’s “Food TV isn’t about food anymore,” says Flay. “It’s about your personality(个性)

and finding a way to keep people’s eyeballs on your show.”

But Lieberman isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket. After taping the first season of the new show,

Lieberman was back in his own small kitchen preparing sandwiches. An airline company was looking for someone

to come up with a tasteful, inexpensive and easy-to-make menu to serve on its flights, and Lieberman got the job.

15. We can learn from the text that Lieberman’s family ______.

A. have relatives in Europe B. love cooking at home

C. often hold parties D. own a restaurant

16. The Food Network got to know Lieberman ______.

A. at one of his parties B. from his teachers

C. through his taped show D. on a television program

17. What does the underlined word “charisma” in the 2nd paragraph refer to?

A. A natural ability to attract others. B. A way to show one’s achievement.

C. Lieberman’s after-class interest. D. Lieberman’s fine cooking skill.

18. Why did the airline company give Lieberman the job?

A. He could prepare meals in a small kitchen. B. He was famous for his shows on Food TV.

C. He was good at using eggs to make sandwiches.

D. He could cook cheap, delicious and simple meals.

How to look good in a photo?

What should you do if you want to have a nice photo taken? Whether it’s work or fun, the most important

thing is lighting. If you get bad lighting, you will look bad, too. Know where the light is. You don’t want it below

you or above you, you want it to shine directly at you.

The key thing is no shadow. If you are being photographed outside, do it in the morning, or wait till the 2

o’clock shadow has passed. Also don’t let pictures in the magazines stress you out — all the pictures are taken by

great photographers. And all the faces have had pimples(粉刺)taken out by computers.

Tip your head and learn what angles (角度) work with your face; everyone is different. So you have to learn

what suits you. You can practice in Photo Booth as long as it is your turn, to learn what angles suit your face. Tip

your neck to make it look longer, make eye contact with the camera. No one can look bad if they smile.

For long legs, point one leg into center of the frame and get the photographer to shoot looking up your body.

For just leg shots, lie upside down and raise legs in the air for the best angle. And your legs will look thinner

and be in better shape.

Keep shoulders back.

Always have mouth slightly open, enough to put a penny between your lips, as this will make your lips look

fuller.

Lower your eyes and then look up just as shutter(快门)is clicked for full eyes.

Delete any evidence of a less than perfect photogenic moment, everyone has off days.

19. If you want to look good in a photo, the light should be ______.

A. below you B. above you C. directly at you D. right behind you

20. According to the passage, we should consider all EXCEPT ______.

A. light B. shadow C. angles D. photographers

21. What advice does the author give on taking photos?

A. Raise your legs as high as possible. B. Keep your eyes down.

C. Position your shoulders straight. D. Put a penny between lips.

D

It’s really true what people say about English politeness: it’s everywhere. When squeezing (挤) past someone

in a narrow aisle (通道), people say “sorry”. When getting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you” rather

than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things.

After all, squeezing past others sometimes can’t be avoided and the bus driver is merely doing his job. I used

to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started traveling to the British Isles and came to appreciate

some more polite ways of communicating with people.

People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop,

customers and retail assistants in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional

to hear more than one thank you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the

room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, as opposed to Germans, who would normally

think that paying their workers money is already enough.

Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize others. Even when I was

working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers stressed several times but none of their explanations

were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criticism, English people are making an

effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is shown in other ways. British men still open doors for women,

and British men are more likely to treat women to meals than German men. However, I do need to point out here

that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men. Yes, the latter are a bit tightfisted.

22. What is the author’s attitude towards English politeness?

A. He appreciates it. B. He gives no personal opinion.

C. He thinks it is just an act. D. He thinks it goes too far.

23. What can we learn about customers and retail assistants in Germany?

A. It’s always retail assistants who say thank you.

B. Customers never say thank you to retail assistants.

C. They always say thank you to each other.

D. They may say thank you only once.

24. We can learn from the last paragraph that Scottish men ______.

A. are more likely to be involved in a fight B. are not so willing to spend money for women

C. are more polite than English men D. treat women in a polite way
