到了21世纪,英语已经是每人必学的第二语言,它对人类的沟通与发展有着强有力的作用。汉语是一个有着五千年历史的泱泱大国——中国的语言,它凝聚了我们中华民族的特点,对历史地推动进程有着不可估量的贡献。

自从炎黄子孙诞生以来,民间的谚语就开始出现。谚语一般是一种人生的真谛,是前人的经验的所在,还是前人留下的最好的遗产。不光是在中国出现这样有趣味的谚语,其实在遥远的西方谚语同样有着发展。他们的大多数与我们的大同小异,所以在翻译的时候要注意与之相结合,用两个相同道理的中外谚语互相搭配。这样,就在谚语这一方面,中英文中就产生了一系列有趣的词语互译。

先说“三个臭皮匠,顶个诸葛亮。”这句话相信大家都知道,但它与英语谚语配对的是:

Two heads are better than one. 字面意思是:两个人比一个人好。当然,翻译成中国谚语时,结合到了历史文化,注重了民间俗语。

鲁班是聪明而且技艺高超的工匠,由此引出了“班门弄斧”这成语,“不要班门弄斧”变为英语后,意义没变,但字面意思就不太一样了,Do not teach fish to swim.(不要教鱼游泳。)

Less is more. 字面意思是:更少的就是更多的。其实

它的真谛是:简单就是美。

Love me, love my dog.就是爱我,爱我的狗,它与中国一个成语——爱屋及乌相似。还有dog在英文谚语中是个好的代名词。

It's never too late to mend.这句话是中国的一句成语——亡羊补牢。它的字面意思是:修理还不晚。与亡羊补牢意思相近,这也是说明了人生有时犯了错误,但发现后改正了,为时还不晚。

一箭双雕可畏是箭法极准,而在英文中表示一箭双雕是:Kill two birds with one stone.也许翻译成一不二鸟也成。

人多力量大是人类团结合作后得到的结论。

Many hands make light work.就是说很多手做事就轻松,简短的话语也就是人多力量大了。
