George Gershwin, born in 1898,was one of America's greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old.During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.

Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s.Many of his songs have remained popular as ever.Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.

In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music.Could jazz,some【2016浏阳文科状元】

people asked,be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music.Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it.And in that short time,he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue.Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.

In 1928,Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition (作曲)with the

well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him.She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there,Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics (评论家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life,to others it was stilly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.

George Gershwin died in 1937,just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old.Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.

1.Many of Gershwin's musical works were________.

A.written about New Yorkers

B.composed for Paul Whiteman

C.played mainly in the countryside

D.performed in various ways

Over the years they have been sung and played in

every possible way—from jazz to country. Gershwin's musical works,“in every possible way ”与 various ways属于同义替换,所以选D。

答案 D 。

2.What do we know about the concert organized by Whiteman?

A.It attracted more people to theatres.

B.It proved jazz could be serious music.

C.It made Gershwin leader of the orchestra.

D.It caused a debate among jazz musicians.

In 1924, jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul

Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music .其中“show that jazz was serious music”和B选项是表达的一个意思,所以选B。

答案 B.

3.What did Gershwin do during his stay in Paris?

A.He created one of his best works.

B.He studied with Nadia Boulanger.

C.He argued with French critics.

D.He changed his music style.

根据原文第四段中“It still remains one of his most famous works.” An American in Paris,“one of his most famous works.”即A选项中的 one of his best works。

答案 A.

4.What do we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Many of Gershwin's works were lost.

B.The death of Gershwin was widely reported.

C.A concert was held in memory of Gershwin.

D.Brain cancer research started after Gershwin's death.

根据原文最后一段,“Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.”即说明了B选项“The death of Gershwin was widely reported.”

5.Which of the following best describes Gershwin?

A.Talented and productive.

B.Serious and boring.

C.Popular and unhappy.

D.Friendly and honest.

答案 A.

A recent study of ancient and modern elephants has come up with the unexpected conclusion that the African elephant is divided into two distinct (不同的) species.

The discovery was made by researchers at York and Harvard Universities when they were examining the genetic relationship between the ancient woolly mammoth and mastodon to modern elephants—the Asian elephant, African forest elephant, and African savanna elephant.

Once they obtained DNA sequences (序列) from two fossils (化石), mammoths and mastodons, the team compared them with DNA from modern elephants. They found to their amazement that modern forest and savanna elephants are as distinct from each other as Asian elephants and mammoths.

The scientists used detailed genetic analysis to prove that the African savanna elephant and the two species took place around the time of the divergence of Asian elephants and woolly mammoths. This result amazed all the scientists.

There has long been debate in the scientific community that the two might be separate species, but

this is the most convincing scientific evidence so far that they are indeed different species.

Previously, many naturalists believed that African savanna elephants and African forest elephants were two populations of the same species, despite the elephants’ significant size differences. The savanna elephant has an average shoulder height of 3. 5 metres while the forest elephant has an average shoulder height of 2. 5 metres. The savanna elephant weighs between six and seven tons, roughly double the weight of the forest elephant. But the fact that they look so different does not necessarily mean they are different species. However the proof lay in the analysis of the DNA. Alfred Roca, assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois, said, “We now have to treat the forest and savanna elephants as two different units for

conservation purposes. Since 1950, all African elephants have been conserved as one species. Now that we know the forest and savanna elephants are two very distinctive animals, the forest elephant should become a bigger priority (优先) for conservation purposes.”

1. One of the fossils studied by the researchers is that of

A. the Asian elephant B. the forest elephant

C. the savanna elephant D. the mastodon elephant

2. The underlined word “divergence” in Paragraph 4 means “."

AA. evolution B. exhibition C. separation D. examination

3. The researchers’ conclusion was based on a study of the African elephant’s

A. DNA B. height C. weight D. population

4. What are Alfred Roca’s words mainly about?

A. The conservation of African elephants.

B. The purpose of studying African elephants.

C. The way to divide African elephants into two units.

D. The reason for the distinction of African elephants.

5. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. Naturalists’ Beliefs about Elephants

B. Amazing Experiments about Elephants

C. An Unexpected Finding about Elephants

We've reached a strange—some would say unusual—point. While fighting world hunger continues to be the matter of vital importance according to a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO), more people now die from being overweight, or say, from being extremely fat, than from being underweight. It's the good life that's more likely to kill us these days.

Worse, nearly 18 million children under the age of five around the world are estimated to be overweight. What's going on?

We really don't have many excuses for our weight problems. The dangers of the problem have been drilled into us by public-health campaigns since 2001 and the message is getting through—up to a point.

In the 1970s, Finland, for example, had the highest rate of heart disease in the world and being overweight was its main cause. Not any more.A public-health campaign has greatly reduced the number of heart disease deaths by 80 per cent over the past three decades.

Maybe that explains why the percentage of people in Finland taking diet pills doubled between

A new study suggests you are where you live—at least in terms of weight.

A rural address could be a risk factor for being overweight, according to the research

published in the fall issue of The Journal of Rural Health.

The study, led by researchers at the University of Kansas, analyzed data from the National Center for Health Statistics. They said it is the first in more than 30 years to use actual

measurements of height and weight, rather than self-reported data, which can be unreliable.

About 70 million Americans,or 23% of the population, live in rural areas. The researchers found that 39.6% of them are obese(肥胖的),while 33.4% of urban residents are

obese.Including overweight people as well, the comparative totals are 70.8% and 67.1%,the study said.

The factors at work could be the “cultural diet” of rural America,as well as the

isolation(隔离) that often exists, said the lead researcher,Christie Befort, assistant professor of preventive medicine and public health at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

That diet includes “rich homemade foods” with lots of meat and desserts, she said.Rural Americans typically consume more fats than their urban counterparts, the study found.

Another factor could be the increased mechanization(机械化) of farm work,Befort

said.Older generations showed less difference in weight than younger ones—older farmers would have put in more physical labor, she said.

“Although some intervention(介入 obesity among rural

adults and families, great attention needs to be focused on widespread effective programs in rural areas, which contain some of the largest medically underserved communities in the nation,” the researchers said.

1.What do we know about the study about weight in the passage?

A.The new study is the first study of rural obesity in the past 30 years.

B.The new study is the first time to research into the cause of obesity.

C.Results in the past years can be inaccurate as they haven't adopted actual measurements.

D.The result of the new study is not reliable at all.

2.What do we know from the fourth paragraph?

A.The rural population in America has increased by 23%.

B.About 27.72 million rural Americans have the problem of obesity.

C.Obese people have moved to live in the countryside for its natural environment.

D.23% of the 70 million Americans live in the countryside.

3.What does the report suggest to deal with the problem?

A.Calling on the farmers to do more physical work.

B.Paying attention to widespread effective programs in rural areas.

C.Getting farmers connected with each other.

D.Persuading people to move to the urban area.

4.What does the underlined word“address” in the last paragraph mean?

A.deal with

C.refer to B.write down D.cure

答案 A

原文 “Although some intervention(介入) research has begun to address obesity among rural adults and families, great attention needs to be focused on widespread effective programs in rural areas, which contain some of the largest medically underserved communities in the nation,” the researchers said.

Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best. For example, to absorb heat from the sun to heat water, you need large, flat, black surfaces. One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially, on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that trouble when cities are full of black surfaces already, in the form of asphalt(柏油) roads?【2016浏阳文科状元】

Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt, a Dutch engineer. He finally persuaded his boss to follow it up. The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of the road outside.

The heat-collector is a system of connected water pipes. Most of them run from one side of the street to the other, just under the asphalt road. Some, however, dive deep into the ground. When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it underground through one of the diving pipes. At a depth of 100 metres lies a natural aquifer(蓄水层) into which several heat exchangers(交换器) have been built. The hot water from the street runs through these exchangers, warming the ground-water, before returning to the surface through another pipe. The aquifer is thus used as a heat store. In winter, the working system is changed slightly. Water is pumped through the heat exchangers to pick up the heat stored during summer. This water goes into the building and is used to warm the place up. After performing that task, it is pumped under the asphalt and its remaining heat keeps the road free of snow and ice.

1. Which of the following is true according to the first two paragraphs?

A. Arian de Bondt got his idea from his boss.

B. Large, flat, black surfaces need to be built in cities.

C. The Dutch engineer’s system has been widely used.

D. Heat can also be collected from asphalt roads.

2. For what purpose are the diving pipes used?

A. To absorb heat from the sun. B. To store heat for future use.

C. To turn solar energy into heat energy. D. To carry heat down below the surface.

3. From the last paragraph we can learn that

A. some pipes have to be re-arranged in winter

B. the system can do more than warming up the building

C. the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surface

D. less heat may be collected in winter than in summer

4. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?

A. What we shall do if the system goes wrong.

B. What we shall do if there are no asphalt roads.

C. How the system cools the building in summer.

D. How the system collects heat in spring and autumn.

Diana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year-old twin sons: a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.

“I have two kids in college, and I want to say ‘come home,’ but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Jacobs.

The Jacobs family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid form the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school.

With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around.

At the same time, tuition(学费)continues to rise. A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982 to 2007, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade,

“If we go on this way for another 25years, we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,” says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. “The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”

Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.

1. According to Paragraph 1, why did the plan of Jacobs family fail?

A. The twins wasted too much money. B. The father was out of work.

C. Their saving ran out. D. The family fell apart.

2. How did the Jacobs manage to solve their problem?

example. These early stories dealt directly with slavery. With minor exceptions,Twain planted his attacks on slavery and prejudice into tales that were on the surface about something else

entirely. He drew his readers into the argument by drawing them into the story.

Again and again,in the postwar years,Twain seemed forced to deal with the challenge of race.Consider the most controversial,at least today,of Twain's novels,Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.Only a few books have been kicked off the shelves as often as Huckleberry Finn,Twain's most widely read tale.Once upon a time, people hated the book because it struck them as rude.Twain himself wrote that those who banned the book considered the novel “trash and suitable only for the slums(贫民窟).”More recently the book has been attacked because of the character Jim,the escaped slave, and many occurences of the word nigger.(The term Nigger Jim,for which the novel is often severely criticized, never appears in it.)

But the attacks were and are silly—and miss the point. The novel is strongly

anti-slavery.Jim's search through the slave states for the family from whom he has been forcibly parted is heroic. As J.Chadwick has pointed out,the character of Jim was a first in American fiction—a recognition that the slave had two personalities,“the voice of survival within a white slave culture and the voice of the individual:Jim,the father and the man.”

There is much more.Twain's mystery novel Pudd'nhead Wilson stood as a challenge to the racial beliefs of even many of the liberals of his day.Written at a time when the accepted wisdom held Negroes to be inferior(低等的)to whites, especially in intelligence,Twain's tale centered in part around two babies switched at birth.A slave gave birth to her master's baby and,for fear that the child should be sold South, switched him for the master's baby by his wife. The slave's lightskinned child was taken to be white and grew up with both the attitudes and the education of the slave-holding class. The master's wife's baby was taken for black and grew up with the attitudes and intonations of the slave.

The point was difficult to miss:nurture(养育),not nature, was the key to social status. The features of the black man that provided the stuff of prejudice—manner of speech, for

example—were,to Twain, indicative of nothing other than the conditioning that slavery forced on its victims.

Twain's racial tone was not perfect. One is left uneasy, for example,by the lengthy passage in his autobiography(自传)about how much he loved what were called“nigger shows”in his

youth—mostly with white men performing in black-face—and his delight in getting his mother to laugh at them.Yet there is no reason to think Twain saw the shows as representing reality. His Was Twain a racist?Asking the question in the 21st century is as wise as asking the same of Lincoln. If we read the words and attitudes of the past through the“wisdom”of the considered moral judgments of the present,we will find nothing but error.Lincoln, who believed the black man the inferior of the white, fought and won a war to free him.And Twain, raised in a slave state, briefly a soldier, and inventor of Jim,may have done more to anger the nation over racial injustice and awaken its collective conscience than any other novelist in the past century.

I once had a friend who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and the news that he might only

live up to six months was a great shock to him, his family, and his friends. However, in spite of the serious illness, he was initially determined to look into all available treatments that might cure or extend his life. I think that when you find yourself in such situations, you tend to look up every possible way for hope of saving your life.

As months went on and his health grew worse, I noticed an unexpected change in attitude that came over him. He had also been a happy person with a cheerful personality, but rather than give in to discouragement and self-pity, he took comfort in God and humanity. His talks focused on others rather than himself, and he spoke of the afterlife as something he was prepared for, believing that his concerned ancestors, including his mother and father, were there waiting for him.

During the last few months, weeks, and days of his life, he was kindly cared for by family,

friends, his loving wife, who looked after both his physical and emotional needs, and workers from a local hospice (安养院) came to the home to regulate his medication and provide any other needed support. He didn’t complain about his fate, and he willingly allowed others to serve him.

Indeed, one might think why God allows death and suffering in our world, but for me, such experiences taught me to value family more and kindness for others. You often can’t learn these

important attributes in the lap of luxury, and perhaps, such an experience is the greatest and final gift the illness can give those left behind.

1. Which word can best describe the man’s initial reaction as soon as he was diagnosed with cancer?

A.Satisfied.

C.Terrified. B.Surprised. D.Confused.

2. What did the man do after he first learned of his illness?

A.He was operated on immediately.

B.He retired from his job.

C.He researched cancer treatments.

D.He felt sad, doing nothing.

3. What was the man’s main source of comfort after several months with the disease?

A.His family and friends.

B.His belief in humanity.

C.His doctors’ encouragement.

D.The care from others.

4. What did the author learn from his friend’s story?

A.Giving more respect to friends.

B.Extending life as possible.

C.Caring for yourself and enjoying luxury.

D.Getting comfort from God.
