《电影《红字》观后感》

To me, "The Scarlet Letter" is a good film with great performances. All the actors do a superb job, although saying German language.

The story takes place in the New England. The Puritans have crossed the sea to their new land America with their religion and customs form the old country. And in the early years of Boston, the church and it’s people were very strong, strong enough to punish everyone who break the laws of God. There was a woman called Hester Prynne. She always wears a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress, walking fast through the street with her bastard Pearl. Her husband Roger Chillingworth is an old man who was full of revenge. He finally found Hester’s lover, Mr. Dimmesdale, a young priest who was kind but sickly, and worked for the church of the town. Chillingworth stays with him every day to afflict this poor man’s soul. At last, young Dimmesdale find his courage back. He stood on the platform of the scaffold, and told everyone that he was the criminal for God, and for Hester. After all this, this young priest died. And Hester made a decision to move Europe with Pearl.

Firstly, I’d like to talk about Hester Prynne, a brave and indomitable woman. During the years of her punishment, Hester tries to hide the secrets and lives with a pure heart. For my personal sense, Hester is a brave woman living under too much pressure and a magnificent woman fighting for her natural rights of love and freedom, even though she is regarded as a sinner who has broken a basic law at that time. In those years, she resists the miserable fate, and yearns for a beautiful life fulling with love. It is such a valuable spirit under that religious background. Hester never give up to the fate of her life, reaching passionately for a life of freedom and love.

Secondly, I would like to talk about Dimmesdale, another leading character. In my mind, he is a coward and a hypocrite lives with guilt. Because of his religious belief, he dare not to tell the truth. For saving his soul, this poor man suffers the mental torture. He burns a scarlet letter with a soldering iron in his chest to condemn himself. Finally, he died under the unbearable burden, becoming a victim of hypocritical morality of human society. On the face of it, religion gives light and hope. But in fact, it does harm to human. In this film, Dimmesdale is the one who is persecuted most, and his weakness leads to this tragedy in some ways.

Another two people impresses me are Pearl and Roger, Hester's husband. Pearl shows the nature of children, the beauty in the world. It seems that she does not be affected by her mother's "A". Human nature is as it should be. We should not let those religious disciplines control us and make ourselves become slaves of spirit. As Prynne's huaband, Roger, his only purpose is find out the person who seduce his wife. This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister. For persecuting Hester and Dimmesdale and having no forgiveness, he tarnishes his soul and becomes a mean man. After Dimmesdale’s death , no one changes more in appearance than him. All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient.

The scarlet letter symbolizes the harshness of Puritan society, showing how Puritan society will always remember the sin. At the last of this film, Hester makes her decision to move Europe with Pearl. At that moment, she is full of energy again. After throwing the red “A“ before her mind, Hester regained her passion and beauty.

Then Bryan came into our scene and somehow rescued his daughter and punished the bad man, eventually he went home with his daughter and introduced her daughter to a famous singer who was willing to teach her daughter songs .

Liam is a perfect actor and by his brilliant act the father’s figure is picturesque. Bryan is a strict father that he will do everything he can to protect his daughter ,even strictly limit his daughter’s life .But he is also a father with love and skill by which he can fight with bad man .Not only does he cares ,but he also knows how to care.

Which the film attracts me is the tense stroy line.Following the line we see a strict and lovely father .Even when write this article now ,I found it excited to revenge this story.

The Scarlet Letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century if American Puritan society. The basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. The female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress at all times. It concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. It’s not simply a love story or a story of sin. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of Puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life.

The story happened in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrates love affairs between three persons. The punished woman. Hester Prynne and his husband. Who called himself Roger Chillingworth . He is an old misshapen man and a doctor. Hester does not love him at all. Another man is a young minister, Dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other. But their love is forbidden in that time . It is sinful. Due to this,Hester is punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame.

In this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has been alone with her child for so long , with litter communication. Shame! Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter A day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame.

When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survive, the tenderness will leave her .Hester’s charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. The letter on her chest represents her work on earth , always helping others, without expecting any thanks. Never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. The townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment , but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “Able”.

But Arthur Dimmesdale, his sin against Hester and Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. He is too weak to admit his sins. He suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. What’s worse, he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins.

After Mr. Dimmesdale’s death , no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chilling worth. All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient . This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister. When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell . It is a curious subject of observation, however, whether hatred or love are not of the same place. Each takes a great deal of emotion from one person. The two feelings seem basically the same, expect that one is smiled upon by God, while the other is worshipped by the devil. The two lovers has ever decided to flee to Europe, where they can live with their dauthter Pearl as a family .They feel a sense of release there. However, their plan fails…… When Hester dies, she is buried next to Dimmesdale. The two share a single tombstone, with a deep colored letter A shining brightly.

Authorities require her to wear a piece of red cloth in the shape of an A (standing for adulteress) on the bodice of her dress to identify her as a sinner. She refuses to identify her partner in sin. Hester is named after the title character of an Old Testament book. In that book, Esther–a Jew who marries the King of Persia, Ahasuerus (Xerxes I)–and her cousin Mordecai persuade the king to spare the lives of Jews previously singled out for annihilation. Comment on the red word

The Scarlet Letter attained(取得) an immediate and lasting success

because it addressed (处理)spiritual and moral issues from a uniquely American standpoint. In 1850, adultery(通奸) was an extremely risqué subject, but because Hawthorne had the support of the New England literary(文学的)establishment(组织), it passed easily into the realm of appropriate (适当的,合适的)reading. It has been said that this work represents the height of Hawthorne's literary genius; dense with terse(剪短生硬的)descriptions. It remains relevant(有关的,切题的) for its philosophical and psychological depth, and continues to be read as a classic tale on a universal theme.[6] Another consideration to note having to do with the book's popularity is that it wasone of the first mass-produced books in America. Into the mid- nineteenth century, bookbinders(活页夹) of home-grown literature typically hand-made their books and sold them in small quantities. The first mechanized printing of "The Scarlet Letter," 2,500 volumes(册), sold out immediately, was widely read and discussed to an extent not much experienced in the young country up until that time. Copies of the first edition are often sought by collectors as rare books, and may fetch up to around $6,000 USD.

远离尘嚣

Much of the plot of Far from the Madding Crowd depends on

unrequited love — love by one person for another that is not mutual(相互的,彼此的) in that the other person does not feel love in return. The novel is driven, from the first few chapters, by Gabriel Oak's love

for Bathsheba. Once he has lost his farm, he is free to wander anywhere in search of work, but he heads to Weatherbury because it is in the direction that Bathsheba has gone. This move leads to Oak's employment at Bathsheba's farm, where he patiently consoles(安慰) her in her troubles and supports her in tending the farm, with no sign he will ever have his love returned.

This novel focuses on the way that catastrophe (大灾难)can occur

at any time, threatening to change lives. The most obvious example occurs when Oak's flock(一群) of sheep is destroyed by an unlikely confluence of circumstances, including an inexperienced sheep dog, a rotted rail, and a chalk pit that happens to have been dug adjacent临近的 to his land. In one night, Oak's future as an independent farmer is destroyed, and he ends up begging just to secure 固定the diminished position of a shepherd.

This novel offers modern readers a clear picture of how important

social position was in England in the nineteenth century and of the opportunities that existed to change class, in either direction. In the

beginning, Oak and Bathsheba are social equals: he is an independent farmer who rents his land, and she lives on her aunt's

farm next door to his, which is presumably大概的 similar in value. The only thing that keeps her from accepting his proposal of marriage is the fact that she just does not want to be married yet. After Oak loses his farm and Bathsheba inherits继承 her uncle's farm, there is little question of whether they can marry —their social positions are too different. She is more socially compatible合得来的 with Boldwood, who owns the farm next to hers and is in a similar social position.

《”红字“观后感》

To me, "The Scarlet Letter" is a good film with great performances. All the actors do a superb job, but I was worried that Demi Moore might not have the range to handle the role of Mistress Prynne, but she is excellent... She is strong, passionate, intelligent and damaged… In another place and time she might have been a leader; in this movie she is quite believable as the woman who defends her love at all costs… Gary Oldman looks perfect as Reverend Dimmesdale… He projects force and sexual magnetism along with the guilt for his sin…

The film opens in 1666 when Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony filled with hope that here, at last, in this new World, would come the freedom to worship without fear or persecution… She didn't suspect that beyond the trees there is a savage land of savage passions dark and untamed, and that soon she will face a scornful community in which she will forever be shamed by the scarlet letter…

Mistress Prynne rejected the idea of staying in the congregation until her husband's arrival and looked for a house of her own… She finds a beautiful and frightening place, just as 'Eden must have been so untouched…'

On one Sabbath morning, Hester met Reverend Dimmesdale (Gary Oldman) who helps her when her cart got stuck in the

woods… She truly enjoyed, few minutes later, his sermon … It was rare, for her, to find a man so young and fiery who could speak with such force of passion… She was moved by his passion…

Dimmesdale thought that comprehending God was going to be his greatest challenge, but—after he met Hester—he was not the man he seems to be… He lost his power before this seductress beautiful woman… He lived in this township his whole life and his purpose was clear… But now he would risk everything—his life, his ministry, his soul—just to spend a few moments alone with her… After he asked her why that morning in the forest, she didn't say that she is married, he wondered how she were able to see so deeply into his nature…

From that moment, two hearts were there struggling against a love that grew stronger with each passing day…

Hester was courteous enough but her tongue knew no rules… She earned more than a few reprimands in her life for speaking too bluntly… With a frightening strength, she challenged her persecutors and stood up to their hypocrisy, refusing to reveal her lover's identity.

This film offered an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century if American Puritan society.

The basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. The female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress at all times. Above all, it’s a good film, from it, I have learnt a lot.

《红字 英文读后感 自己写的》

The Scarlet Letter

《The Scarlet Letter》written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel concerns souls.Everyone has his own soul.Someone defends his soul, someone does damage to it,even there are people who lose their own souls. In consequence, this world is filled with human stories in thousands of postures.

“A” is the first letter of the alphabetic which means the beginning of one thing. However, inn Christians‟ tradition, the beginning indicates deprivation and original sin that no one can get rid of.According to the Bible,we are all the seed of Adam.Nevertheless,Adam and Eve were punished by Jehovah for their stealing to eat love forbidden fruit.Owing to this,we,who are the descendants of Adam and Eve,are born guilty. In Puritans‟ eyes,Hester Prynne is a dissolute and immoral woman. They take Hester into custody just to show the dignity of God. So foolish people they are!An ugly woman cries:“This woman has brought shame upon us all,and ought to die.Is there not law for it? Truly there is,both in the Scripture and the statute book.”(2009:56)From this description,we can easily find that people there are so indifferent that they seem to be captivate by the church. We see,Hester is so common a woman who is dying for love and does not want to be forced to compromise to reality.“She had dark and abundant hair,so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam, and a face which, besides being beautiful from regularity of

feature and richness of complexion, had the impressiveness belonging to a marked brow and deep black eyes”.(57)Hester is such a good woman that she shows great love to her beloved--Mr Dimmesdale. This religious entanglement of emotions is difficult for people who have no religion belief to understand.I am such a person who can not understand.Religion has been part of the Westerners‟s life and it must be very painful to leave the religious life. But I do not have a religious experience, so it is hard for me to understand the hero's psychology. These are the obstacles for me to understand the novel and I find it hard to overcome it.

Hester‟s abundant emotions are not only indicated in her enthusiasm for love, but also her devotion to life, her utmost care for her daughter, and indomitable struggle against appress.Apparently, she submits herself to the adjustment and bears a lot to carry on her life. However, she keeps struggling with the puritanism inwardly. Here, in chapter 18,we can see the vivid words:“She and wandered, without rule or guidance,in a moral wilderness;as vast, the gloom of which they were now holding a colloquy that was to decide their fate. Her intellect and heart had their home,as it were,in a decent place, where she roamed as freely as the wild Indian in his woods.”(215)She insists that things she does with Mr Dimmesdale are pure.Hester lives in a small town, swallowing humiliation and bearing a heavy load, not that she wants to atone for her crime, but that she shows her resistance against puritanism.

Then,I would like to give some of my analyses upon the symbolism of the word „A‟.First, the most important one,A indicates the great Affection between Hester and Dimmesdale. She could escape from that place, but she is brave enough to face the reality and bear the sufferings on her own.Luckily, her warm heart wins people‟s acceptance. So,here, "A" is a symbol of Able. Finally,Hester with her virtues wins the respect of the people, "A" became the symbol of the Angel. With the development of the plot, Hester gradually moves towards awakening and mature, tenacious against the Puritan rule, and thus the "A" has the meaning of an indomitable woman-- Amazon. The letter A is a symbol of love and it also represents a punishment from the God. The presence of the scarlet letter saves the soul of Hester, regulates her virtues, make people painful but enjoy the regained life, the author gives A multiple meanings.

During this period,Dimmesdale is also in suffering,he can do nothing for Hester but to watch her being teased at ,and no matter how much he loves his daughter Pearl, he cannot let others know their true relationship between each other. He suffers from his conscience. He cried in the forest :“I have laughed, in bitterness and agony of heart, at the contrast between what I seem and what I am! And Satan laughs at it!” (206) So here,A in Dimmesdale,is given another meaning--Agony.

Little Pearl brings me happiness when reading the novel.Maybe she

is the only bright character who can bring us cheers. She is the daughter of Hester and Dimmesdale. First of all,the word “pearl”comes from the Bible which means a very precious thing.Recorded in the Bible, God allows a merchant to sell all their possessions to buy a pearl, and tells him that this pearl is his paradise.Hester pays a heavy price for the arrival of the Pearl. Daughter Pearl occupies a very important position in her heart, Pearl is all of her wealth. The “Scarlet Letter”was adapted into a film in 1994.Hester who is acted by Demi Moore in the movie looks just like a Pearl.
