mesoscopicsolarcells(1–3)haverapidlyreachedconversionefficienciesover15%(4,5),andmostuseamethylammoniumleadhalide(MAPbX3,X=halogen)anditsmixed-halidecrystalanalog(6–14).Theseperovskiteshavealargeabsorptioncoefficient,highcarriermobility,directbandgap,andhighstability.TheyarecomposedofEarth-abundantmaterialsandcanbedepositedbylow-temperaturesolutionmethods.However,perovskitecrystalli-zationfromsolutionproduceslargemorpholog-icalvariations(14)andincompletefillingofthemesoporousoxidescaffold,whichresultsinanunwantedspreadofthephotovoltaicperform-anceoftheresultingdevices.Mostdevicesusegoldasabackcontact,inconjunctionwithor-ganicholeconductorsactingaselectron-blockinglayers.Holeconductorssuchasthewidelyusedarylaminespiro-OMeTADarenotonlyexpensivebutcanlimitthelong-termstabilityofthedevice.Hole-conductor–freeperovskitephotovoltaicswereinitiallyreportedbyEtgaretal.(15),andtodatepowerconversionefficiencies(PCEs)of10.85%(16–18)havebeenachieved,withgoldasacounter-electrode.

Aschematiccrosssectionofthetriple-layer,perovskite-based,fullyprintablemesoscopicsolarcell(Fig.1A)showsthatthemesoporouslayersofTiO2andZrO2havethicknessesof~1and2mm,respectively,thatweredepositedonaF-dopedSnO2(FTO)–coveredglasssheet.Themesopo-rouslayerswereinfiltratedwithperovskitebydrop-castingfromsolutionthrougha10-mm-thickcarbonlayerprintedontopoftheZrO2.Theenergybandalignmentofthedevice(Fig.1B)preventselectrons,injectedfromthephoto-excitedperovskiteintotheTiO2scaffold,fromreachingthebackcontactbecauseofthe0.6-eVoffsetbetweenitsconductionbandandthatofZrO2.ThecompactTiO2layerdepositedontheFTOconductingglasspreventsthevalencebandholesfromreachingtheFTO-coveredfrontelectrode.TheCH3NH3

PbI3perovskiteunitcell(Fig.1C)containsonePb2+,oneorganicammo-niumcation,andthreeI–anions(19).

Weintroducedthe5-AVAcationintothepe-rovskitelatticewithamixtureofMAand5-AVAintheprecursorsolutionthatmaintaineda1:1molarratiooforganicammoniumcationsandPbI2.Theoptimalmolarratioofammoniumcationsin(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3wasdeterminedtobebe-tween1:20and1:30.Thex-raydiffraction(XRD)patternsofneatMAPbI3and(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3infiltratedintothemesoporousZrO2/TiO2filmarecomparedinFig.2.Thenewlyemergingdiffractionpeaksarisingfromthe(001)and(111)latticeplanesfor(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3aremuchstrongerthanthecorrespondingonesforMAPbI3.Andevenatlow5-AVA/MAmolarratios,5-AVAsubstantiallyincreasesthebandclatticepa-rameters.Thelargeexpansionofthecaxisin-ducedby5-AVAindicatesitspreferentialalignmentalongthisaxisthroughcontactwithleadand

iodideions,andthecaxisbecomesthedominantorientationduringcrystalgrowth.Mercier(20)used4-ammonium-butyricacid(4-ABA)asatemplatefortheengineeringof(4-ABA)2PbI4andmixed-cation(4-ABA)2MAPb2I7perovskitecrystals.TheABAmoleculesformedlinearhydrogen-bondedchainsthatactassupramolecularsynthonsforlayeredplumboiodideperovskitestructures.Weproposethatthe5-AVAaffectsthecrystalgrowthof(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3inasimilarfash-ionthroughtheformationofhydrogenbondsbetweenitsCOOHandNH3+groupsandI–ionsfromthePbI6octahedra.

Weappliedtransmissionelectronmicros-copy(TEM)andscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)tounraveldifferencesinthemorphologyofthetwoperovskites.High-resolutionTEMimages(Fig.3,AtoC)reflectingthemorphologyofneatTiO2particles,aswellasMAPbI3or(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3–coveredTiO2particlesthatwerescrapedoffofmesoporousTiO2filmsinfil-tratedwithMAPbI3or(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3,respec-tively.Substantialdifferencesappearedbetweenthemorphologiesofthesamplesproducedfromthetwodifferentperovskiteprecursorsolutions.TheobservedpatternindicatesthatthereisamuchdensercoverageoftheTiO2particleswith(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3ascomparedtoMAPbI3.The(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3appearstoexhibitcrys-tallinefeaturesonamuchlongerlengthscalethanMAPbI3,coveringmostoftheTiO2surfaceinauniformfashion.Incontrast,thesingle-stepsolutionprecipitationofMAPbI3onlypartiallycoatedthesubstrateandleftlargeareaswheretheperovskiteabsorberwascompletelyabsent.Theimprovementoftheperovskitecrystalqualityandthehigherloadingofthemesoporesoftheoxidescaffoldinthepresenceof5-AVAcationsprobablyresultedfromthetemplatingactionoftheAVAaffectingtheperovskitecrystalnucle-ationandgrowthwithinthemesoscopicoxidescaffold.TheCOOHgroupsof5-AVAanchoramonolayeroftheaminoacidtothesurfaceofthemesoporousTiO2andZrO2filmbycoordina-tivebindingtotheexposedTi(IV)orZr(IV)ions.Intheadsorbedstate,theterminal-NH3+groupsof5-AVAfacetheperovskitesolutionandhenceserveasnucleationsites.ThisroleweattributetoAVAisconfirmedbyrecentwork(21)showingthatprotonatedaminoacidsoftheAVAtypeindeedtemplatethecrystalgrowthofplumbohalideperovskitesinmesoscopicTiO2films,improvingthecrystallinenetworkandcharge-carrierlifetimeoftheCH3NH3PbI3insertedintotheporousmetaloxides.

Weperformedphotoluminescence(PL)decaymeasurementsinordertoextractquantitativeinformationontheyieldoflight-inducedchargeseparation.ExcitonsgeneratedbylightexcitationofMAPbI3dissociateintofreechargecarrierswith-in1ps(22).WeinfiltratedmesoporousTiO2andZrO2filmswithMAPbI3or(5-AVA)x(MA)1-xPbI3andmeasuredthePLdecay;ZrO2servesasareferencebecauseitsconductionbandisnotaccessibleforelectroninjection.ThePLdecayoftheMAPbI3perovskitecontainedinZrO2filmsexhibitsatimeconstantofte=8.14ns,

IntheabsenceofZrO2,theperformanceoftheperovskitephotovoltaicispoor,withJsc=12.51mAcm−2,Voc=592mV,FF=0.56,andPCE=4.18%[fig.S7(23)].ThisconfirmsthatZrO2isblockingtheflowofphotogeneratedelectronstothebackcontact,preventingrecombinationwiththeholesfromtheperovskiteatthebackcontact.

Figure1showsadielectricgradientmetasur-faceopticalelement(DGMOE)servingasanaxicon.Whereasconventionalglassaxiconsareafewmillimetersinsize(Fig.1A),theDGMOEfeaturesa100-nm-thicklayerofpoly-silicondepositedonaquartzsubstrate(Fig.1B)generatedinasinglepatterningstep(21).Figure1Dshowsascanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM)imageofthefab-ricatedDGMOEcomposedofthousandsofSinanobeamantennas.

WhenilluminatedwithacollimatedGaussianleftcircularlypolarized(LCP)lightbeamata550-nmwavelength,theDGMOEcreatesanon-diffractingBesselbeamonthetransmission(Fig.1,CandE,andsectionS2ofthesupplementarymaterials).TheintensitydistributionsalongandacrossthecenterofBesselbeamareshownasinsetstoFig.1E.Theratiobetweenthehigh-intensitycentralbeamspotandthefirstringis6:1,asignatureofaBesselbeam.Theoperationofthelenscouldbeanalyzedbyunderstanding

ofthecoherentfar-fieldandnear-fieldinter-betweentheSinanobeamantennas.Here,describethebehavioroftheopticalelementonanunderstandingofthePancharatnam-(PB)phase.

ThePBphaseisageometricphaseachievedbypolarizationmanipulations(22,23),opposedtoapropagationphase.PBOEsarefromwaveplateelementsforwhichorientationofthefastaxesdependsontheposition.Well-definedalgorithmsexistrealizingspecificopticalfunctions.Bytilingsurfacewithhalf-waveplateswiththeirfast-orientationsaccordingtoafunctionq(x,y),incidentcircularlypolarizedlightbeamwillfullytransformedtoabeamofoppositeandimprintedwithageometricphasetoϕg(x,y)=T2q(x,y)(21,24).Bycontrol-thelocalorientationofthefastaxesoftheplateelementsbetween0andp,phasecanbeachievedthatcoverthefull0-to-prangewhilemaintainingequaltransmissionfortheentireopticalcomponent.Thisprovidesfullcontroloverthewavefront.Acon-tinuousdesiredphasefunctioncanbeapproxi-matedusingdiscretewaveplateorientations.Weuseeightorientationswithwhichahighthe-oreticaldiffractionefficiencyof95%canbeachieved(25).Therealizationofwaveplateele-mentsrepresentsacrucialstepincraftingPBOEs.Indesigningultrathinnanobeam-basedwaveplates,itisimportanttofirstunderstandtheopticalresonancesofindividualsemiconductornanobeams.Top-illuminatedsinglebeamssup-portresonancesundertransverseelectric(TE)illumination(withtheelectricfieldpolarizednormaltothelengthofthestructure)andtheorthogonaltransversemagnetic(TM)polariza-tion(12,18).Thethicknessoftheresonantstructurescanbesmallcomparedwiththefree-spacewavelengthduetothehighrefractiveindexofsemiconductors.A120-nm-wideand100-nm-highSinanobeamsupportsastrongresonanceandasubstantialphaseretardationinourtargetwavelengthrangeofinterest.Wechosethisbeamasthebasicbuildingblockforourwaveplate(Fig.2A)inanticipationthatitsresonantbehaviorandtheaccompaniedphaseretarda-tionbetweentheorthogonalpolarizationswouldpersistinthebeamarray.FiniteelementsimulationsindicatethatthewavefrontforaTE-polarizedlightbeamat550nmisdelayedby0.14pascomparedwiththewavefrontintheabsenceofthenanobeams.ThewavefrontforTM-polarizedlightisdelayedevenfurtherto1.15p(Fig.2B).Asaresult,thephaseretar-dationbetweenthetwoorthogonalpolarizations
