A Our surrounding(周围) is being polluted faster than nature and man‟s present efforts can‟t prevent it. Time is bringing us more people, and more people will bring us more industry, more cars, larger cities, and the growing use of man-made materials.

What can explain and solve this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man—by his desire for a modern way of life. We make “increasing industrialization” our chief aim. So we are always ready to offer everything: clean air, pure water, good food, our health and the future of our children. There is a constant flow of people from countryside to cities, eager for the benefit of our modern society. But as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years, pollution has become a serious problem.

Isn‟t it time we stopped to ask ourselves where we are going—and why? It makes one think of the story about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loudspeaker, “I‟ve some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we‟re making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we‟re lost and don‟t know where we‟re going.” The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when spoken of our modern society.

1.Man can‟t prevent the world from being polluted mainly because A. many man-made materials

B. more cars, trucks and buses

C. more people and more industry

D. more cities

2.People crowd into the cities because_________.

A. they want very much to find well-paid jobs

B. they eager for the achievement of our modern society

C. they have become tired of their homeland

D. they have a strong wish to become industrial workers

3.The story about the airline pilot tells us that_________.

A. man knows where the society is going

B. people do not welcome the rapid development of modern society

C. man can do little about the problem of pollution

D. the writer is worried about the future of our society

4. What does the writer really want to say in this passage?

江苏省2013年高考语文预测试卷

A. With the development of technology, pollution has become a serious problem.

B. Lower the speed of development to stop pollution.

C. It‟s time we did something to reduce pollution.

D. As industry is growing fast, pollution is the natural result.

When I was at university, I studied very hard. But a lot of my friends did very little work. Some did just enough to pass exams. Others didn't do quite enough. Fred Baines was one of them. He spent more time drinking in the Students' Union than working in the library.

Once, at the end of the term, we had to take an important test in chemistry. The test had a hundred questions. Beside each question, we had to write "True" or "False". While I was studying in my room the night before the test, Fred was watching television. Fred usually worried a lot the night before a test. But on that night he looked perfectly calm. Then he told me of his plan.

"It's very simple. There are a hundred questions and I have to get fifty correct to pass the test. I'll take a coin into the examination room. I haven't studied a chemistry book for months, so I'll just toss(抛) the coin. That way, I'm sure I'll get half the questions right."

The next day Fred came cheerfully into the examination room. He sat tossing a coin for half an hour as he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.

The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor (走廊).

"Oh, good," he said. "Have you got the result of the test? What mark did I get?"

The professor looked at him and smiled.

"Ah, it's you, Baines. Just a minute."

Then he reached into his pocket and took out a coin. He threw it into the air, caught it in his hand and looked at it.

"I'm terribly sorry, Baines," he said, "you failed."

1. Fred Baines .

A. spent quite some time working in the Students' Union

B. worked hard at his lessons but he failed again and again

C. often failed his tests

D. wouldn't work hard so long as he could pass a test

2. Fred looked perfectly calm before the chemistry test because .

A. he was already well prepared for it

B. he didn't think the test was so important for him

C. someone had promised to help him out

D. he believed he had found out a way to pass the test without any difficulty

3. The students were required to finish the test within .

A. half an hour B. an hour C. three quarters D. an hour and a half

4. After the test, Baines was .

A. sure that he would pass it

B. anxious to know the result

C. sorry that he cheated during the test

D. discouraged because he'd probably fail the test

5. The professor told Baines the result of the test by tossing a coin because .

A. he hadn't marked all the papers yet

B. he couldn't remember the mark Baines got

C. he wouldn't hurt Baines' feeling by telling him the truth

D. he wanted to teach Baines a lesson

Visiting the Arctic

ZHOU Mingfeng, 17, has only stepped out of his birthplace, Qingdao, once to visit the top of the world, the Arctic!

The Senior 2 student from the High School Attached to Ocean University of China joined a two-week journey to the Arctic at the beginning of this month, after he was recommended for the trip. Including his teacher, Wu Jianying, the adventure group consisted of 12 students and teachers from China, Spain, Canada, Britain and the US.

“The trip brought the whole subject of geography and climate change to life,” Zhou said. Before they landed by air on Canada‟s research icebreaker (破冰船) in the Arctic, Amundsen, the group visited an Inuit (英纽特人的) community. Zhou also got the chance to experience dog-sledding for the first time!

He was surprised to find that Inuit people don‟t live in snow igloos (圆顶建筑) any longer. “They live in modern, warm wooden houses and travel mostly by snowmobile,” he said.

During the time on board Amundsen, every day was science orientated (以……为主). Zhou and other teenagers were guided by scientists, who work there, to take part in laboratory and field work. Sometimes they went outside to collect ice and snow samples for experiments despite the windy, freezing climate.

As the only Chinese student, Zhou didn‟t feel very confident due to his English inefficiency. “Those students soon got close to the onboard scientists and became involved (参与) in their research,” he recalled in admiration. However, it didn‟t prevent Zhou from enjoying the unique and remote life there.

When the wind died and the sun shone on the frozen desert, Zhou and his new friends recorded their days with photo shoots out on the ice beside the Amundsen!

“The views were breathtaking! Everything around us seemed lifeless, which is shocking,” he said.

But there proved to be something alive, under the ice caps. A seal popped out of the water below the ship and greeted them on the last day of their stay.

“It was the only animal I saw in the Arctic!” he said. “But it‟s a pity that I didn‟t see a single polar bear in the „capital‟ of the creature.

1. According to the passage, the students and teachers visiting Artic are most likely to _______.

C. learn English D. learn about Inuit community

2. In the passage, Amundsen is _________.

A. an icebreaker B. an Inuit igloo C. a place in Artic D. a dog-drawn sled

Part II. Reading Comprehension(40%)

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

Most words in everyday use have several meanings. Usually, there is some connection between the meanings so that you can see how one grew out of another. Occasionally, there is a meaning entirely unrelated, even opposite, to the others.

Knowing these facts about words, you do not expect a word to have the same meaning in every sentence. But in some expressions and phrases, none of the usual meanings seems to fit. The phrase has a special meaning of its own. Phrases of this sort are called idioms. You cannot get the meaning of the phrase by adding together the meaning of each of the words within it.

For example, if someone says,“Put out the cat,”you add the meanings from left to right put + out + the + cat. Then, you pick up the cat and place (put ) it outside (out). But if someone asks you to put out the light, you don’t pick up the light and put it anywhere. In “put out the cat,”each word has its usual meaning. In“put out the light,”the words put out have a special meaning. They make up an idiom.

Many American idioms are made by adding a verb such as put to an adverb

such as out ,In some sentences, however, the words out, in, up, down, etc. are not necessary to the meaning. They are used as space fillers (brush off your coat) or for emphasis (Hurry up). -----C----

Questions 30 to 34 are based on the following passage:

As we flew in from the sea towards the airport, we passed over the city and I could easily make out many of the landmarks such as the main square and the new hospital. Following instructions, we put out our cigarettes, fastened our seatbelts and waited expectantly for the plane to begin its landing. It was a quarter to four and we had reached our destination only a few minutes behind time. Instead of landing, however, the plane suddenly began to climb again and then headed out to sea. After that we flew round and round in wide circles.

“Always some delay,”complained the old man in the seat next to me. “I have to give a lecture at five and at this speed I shall be late.”These were the first words spoken during the flight and after this he passed into silence once

when i was at university every night篇五:语法

定语从句(2)

一、“介词+关系代词”结构

1. 可代替when, where, why, that等关系词

e.g. There is no reason for which (why) we shouldn’t be friends.

2. 介词后面的关系词不能省略。

e.g. Here is the money with which to buy a piano.

3. that前不能有介词。

4. 某些在从句中充当时间,地点或原因状语的“介词+关系词”结构可以跟关系副词when 和where 互换。

e.g. This is the house in which I lived two years ago.

This is the house where I lived two years ago.

Do you remember the day on which you joined our club?

Do you remember the day when you joined our club?

二、关系副词的用法:

(一)基本用法

关系副词起连接主句和从句的作用,又在从句中作状语,when, where和why分别表示时间,地点和原因。

1. when

在从句中作时间状语。常用on which, in which, at which, during which等代替。 e.g. April the first is the day when people make fun of others.

=April the first is the day on which people make fun of others.

2. where

在从句中作地点状语。常可由in which, on which, at which, on which等取代。 e.g. This is the house where he lived two years ago.

=This is the house in which he lived two years ago.

3. why why在定语从句中作原因状语。可用for which代替。why不可引导非限定性定语从句,此时可用for which代替。

e.g. This is the reason why he went away.

=This is the reason for which he went away.

(二)关系副词常可用“介词+关系代词”的结构改写

这里的关系代词只限于which和whom,例如

① I will never forget the night when I met you for the first time.

=I will never forget the night

② This is the house

=This is the house

③ We don’t know the reason for which he suddenly fell ill.

=We don’t know the reason

注意:并不是所有的介词+关系代词的结构都可用关系副词替代。

e.g. I am very impressed by the way

这里in which 代表的是in the way, 在句中作方式状语。只有当介词+关系代词结构作表示时间、地点和原因的状语时,才能相应地用when, where和why代替。

(三)如何判断是用关系代词还是关系副词

这本质上取决于关系代词和关系副词在定语从句中充当的成分。前者充当主语、宾语、表语或定语,后者充当状语。

试比较下面两组句子:

① This is the factory that/which produces radios.

This is the factory 第一句中划线部分在从句中作主语,故而应选用关系代词:

而第二句中划线部分在从句中作地点状语故而应选用关系副词:

Radios are produced② Do you remember the days (that) we spent together?

?

第一句中关系代词在从句中作宾语:而第二句中关系副词作时间状语:We worked together during the days.

(四)一些需要特殊记忆的关系词的用法

1. I don’

当先行词是way时,除了in which,还可以用that来引导定语从句。that还经常省略。e.g. Judging from the way he walked, I believe he was wounded in the leg.

2. Finally came the day 当先行词为time, moment, day等,并在从句中作状语时,从句也可以用that引导,that也常省略。又如:

① It was the first time

② The moment (that/when) he sent the mail, John realized what a mistake he had made.

③ She was the only girl I went steady with during the four years (that /when) I was at university.

三、关系副词的省略:

1. the time, every time, each time, the moment等后的关系副词可以省略。

e.g. By the time (when) he was fourteen years old, Jim had learnt more than two

thousand English words.

2. 在某些表示地点的名词后,关系副词有时也可以省略。如the place等。 e.g. This is the place (where) I saw him last time.

3. 先行词the reason后面的关系副词可以省略。

e.g. The reason (why) he came here is quite clear.

4. 当先行词是way时,关系副词常常省略。

e.g. I know the way (that) he learns English.

四、判断关系代词与关系副词的方法:

1. 用关系代词,还是关系副词完全取决于从句中的谓语动词。及物动词后面没有宾语,就必须要求用关系代词;而不及物动词则要求用关系副词。 判断下列句子的对错

(×) This is the mountain village where I visited last year.

(×) I will never forget the days when I spent in the countryside.

(√) This is the mountain village (which) I visited last year.

(√) I'll never forget the days (which) I spent in the countryside.

习惯上总把表地点或时间的名词与关系副词 where, when联系在一起。此两题错在关系词的误用上。

2. 准确判断先行词在定语从句中的成分(主、谓、宾、定、状),也就能正确选择出关系代词/关系副词。

例1. Is this museum ___ you visited a few days age?

A. where B. that C. on which D. the one

例2. Is this the museum ____ the exhibition was held.

A. where B. that C. on which D. the one

答案:例1 D,例2 A

例1变为肯定句: This museum is ___ you visited a few days ago.

例2变为肯定句: This is the museum ___ the exhibition was held.

Every night after dinner, my mother and I would sit at the kitchen table. She would present new tests, taking her from stories of amazing children she had read in newspapers and magazines.

The first night she brought out a story about a three-year-old boy who knew the capitals of all the states in our country and most of the European countries. A teacher also said the little boy could also pronounce the names of the foreign cities correctly.

“What’s the capital of Finland?” my mother asked me, looking at the magazine story.

All I knew was the capital of California. “Nairobi!” I guessed, saying the most word I could think of. She checked to see if that was possibly one way to “Helsinki” before showing me the answer.

The tests got . One night I had to look at a page from the Bible (圣经) for three minutes and then report everything I could remember. I said all I remembered. And I saw my mother’s disappointed (失望的) face once again, something inside of me began to I looked in the mirror in the bathroom and when I saw only my face looking back — and that it would always be this face — I began to cry. I made loud noises like a mad animal.

And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy (奇才) side of me — because I have never seen that face before. I looked at myself in the mirror, blinking (眨眼) so I could see more thoughts. I won’t let her me. I won’t be what I’m not.
