At noon ,a big Marlin took hold of one of the lines, but the fish was far too big for him to handle.

Santiago let the fish have enough line, so that it wouIdn9t break his pole; but he and his boat were dragged out to sea for three days. Finally ,the fish grew tired. Santiago killed it Even this final victory didn’t end his journey. He was still far, far out to sea. Many years ago,a French naturalist,Comte de Buffon, wrote some books about natural history. The books were a great success even though some critics(批评家)did not like them. Some critics said,“Comte de Buffon is more of a poet than a scientist.”

Thomas Jefferson did not like what Comte de Buffon had said about the natural wonders of the New World. It seemed to Jefferson that Comte de Buffon had spoken of natural wonders in America as if they were unimportant.

This troubled Thomas Jefferson. He was also a naturalist,as well as a farmer,an inventor,a historian,a writer and a politician. He had seen the natural wonders of Europe. To him, they were no more important than those of the New World.

In 1788,Thomas Jefferson wrote about his home state,Virginia. While writing,he thought of its natural beauty and then of the words of Comte de Buffon. At that moment,Jefferson created a new word-belittle.He said,“Comte de Buffon believes that nature belittles her productions on this side of the Atlantic.”

Noah Webster, the American word expert, liked this word.He put it in the English language dictionary in 1806,“Belittle—to make small, unimportant.”

Americans had already accepted Jefferson’s word and started to use it.In 1797,the Independent Chronicle used the word to describe a politician the paper supported.“He is an honorable man,”the paper wrote,“so let the opposition try to belittle him as much as they please.”

In 1872,a famous American word expert decided that the time had come to kill this word.He said,“Belittle has no chance of becoming English. And as more critical writers of America, like those of Britain, feel no need of it,the sooner it is forgotten, the better.”

This expert failed to kill the word.Today, belittle is used where the English language is spoken.

The owner of a missing cat is asking for help. “My baby has been missing for over a month now, and I want him back so badly,” said Mrs. Brown, a 56yearold woman.

Mrs. Brown lives by herself in a park near Clovis. She said that Clyde, her 7year-

old cat, didn't come home for dinner more than a month ago. The next morning he didn't appear for breakfast, either. After Clyde missed an extraspecial lunch, she called the police. When the policeman asked her to describe Clyde, she told him that Clyde

had beautiful green eyes, had all his teeth but was missing half of his left ear,

and was seven years old and completely white.

“Is Clyde your child or your pet?” the officer asked. “Well, he's my cat.”

Mrs. Brown replied. “Lady, you should report missing PERSONS, not missing CATS!”

said the annoyed policeman. “You can ask around your neighborhood or put up flyers.” Mrs. Brown figured that a billboard would work a lot better than an 8

×11 piece of paper on a telephone pole. There was an empty billboard at the end

of her street just off the highway, with a phone number on it.

She called that number, and they told her they could put up a picture of Clyde

on the billboard for all to see. They told her it would cost only ¥3 000 a month.

So she took most of the money out of her savings account and rented the billboard

for a month. The month has passed, but Clyde has not appeared.

Because she has almost no money in savings, Mrs. Brown called the local newspaper

to see if anyone could help her rent the billboard for just one more month. She is

waiting but, so far, no one has stepped forward.

While waiting to pick up a friend at an airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one

of those lifechanging experiences that you hear other people talk about—the kind

that happens to you unexpectedly. To me, this happened and was only two feet away

from me.

Locating my friend among the passengers, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying

two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.

First he walked to his youngest son (maybe 6 years old) as he laid down his bags.

They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each

other's face, I heard the father say,“It's so good to see you, son. I missed you

so much!” His son smiled somewhat shyly, and replied softly,“Me, too, Dad!”

Then the man stood up, gazed into the eyes of his oldest son (maybe 9 or 10) and

while cupping his son's face in his hands said, “You're already quite a young man.

I love you very much, Zach!” They too hugged a most loving, tender hug.

While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or oneandahalfyear old)

was squirming (扭动) excitedly in her mother's arms, never once taking her little

eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said,“Hi, baby girl!”

as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and

then held her close to his chest while rocking her from side to side. The little girl

instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment.

After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared,

“I've saved the best for last!” and went to give his wife the longest, most

passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds

and then silently mouthed, “I love you so much!” They stared into each other's

eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands.

For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their

kids that they couldn't possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized

how totally attentive I was in the wonderful display of unconditional love not more

than an arm's length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading

something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask,“Wow! How long

have you two been married?”

“Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” he replied,

without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife's face. “Well then, how long have

you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming

his joyous smile. “Two whole days!”

Two days? I was stunned. I had assumed he'd been gone for at least several weeks—if

not months. I know my expression betrayed me. “I hope my marriage is still that

passionate after twelve years!”

The man suddenly stopped smiling.

He looked me straight in the eye, and with forcefulness that burned right into

my soul, he told me something that left me a different person, “Don't hope, friend...

decide!” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said,

“God bless!”

With that, he and his family turned and walked away together. I was still watching

that exceptional man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend

came up to me and asked, “What'cha looking at?” Without hesitating, and with a

curious sense of certainty, I replied,“My future!”

Throughout the month of April, Canadians are being asked to “Give It Up for Earth

Canada president Jed Goldberg says that as people become more environmentally aware,

That's the reason behind the “Give It Up for Earth Day” campaign. It's designed

to encourage healthy habits that benefit people and the planet. It challenges everyone

to help create a healthier world by making changes in their daily routine.

“We wanted to plan an actiontargeted campaign that will give people a chance

“Drink your milk. It is good for you!” You’ve probably heard that many times, and it is true. Milk contains calcium, which is a necessary nutrient for keeping bones and teeth healthy and strong. The US government even requires milk as part of the National School Lunch Program, saying that students should drink one cup of fat-free or low-fat milk at each meal.

Last Thursday, however, a group of doctors asked the government to remove the lunch program. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says, “Milk is high in sugar, high in fat and high in animal protein,” all of which have negative effects on health. The PCRM says there were better and healthier ways to get calcium

such as eating beans, broccoli, cereals and tofu. Orange juice and soymilk that have calcium added to them also supply the nutrient. “One of the only reasons people talk about dairy, or promote it at all, is because it is going to help build strong bones,” says Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the PCRM. But milk may not be the best way to get calcium your body needs.

Of course, calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth, but there are other things that affect your bone strength, such as genes, how much vitamin D you take in and getting an hour’s worth of exercise every day.

Some nutritionists disagree with the idea that milk isn’t important. Keri Gans, a dietitian, says, “I think it is irresponsible to take this that children enjoy, especially among those who are unable to meet their nutrient needs for the day, and remove it from lunch time.”

The US government is studying the request of the PCRM, but a decision may be a long way off. It Up for Earth Day!” Earth Day has been celebrated every year on April 22 since 1970. Earth Day Canada's president Jed Goldberg says that as people become more environmentally aware, they want to find ways to reduce their environmental influence, not just celebrate one special event.

“Earth Day is a great launching_pad for thinking about environmental action every day,” said Goldberg. “Choosing healthier options, even for the short term, can lead to thinking about the influence of our decisions for a lifetime.”

That's the reason behind the “Give It Up for Earth Day” campaign. It's designed to encourage healthy habits that benefit people and the planet. It challenges everyone to help create a healthier world by making changes in their daily routine.

“We wanted to plan an actiontargeted campaign that will give people a chance to act on their concern for the environment in a positive way,” said Goldberg.

The campaign has identified four daily actions that can add up to huge environmental savings. They include pledging (保证) to turn off the TV, giving up the use of poisonous cleaners, reducing consumption of consumer products and cutting out meat.

At the end of April, all of the pledges will be recorded and converted (转化) into the number of TV hours not watched, dollars not spent on unnecessary items, electricity saved, greenhouse gas emissions (排放) avoided by cutting out meat, and poisonous chemicals produced from homes and landfills.

“What we're trying to achieve this year for Earth Day is to give people a chance to do something that is meaningful and measurable,” said Goldberg.

understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just student, stood “Almost read, didn't have a gift for it. It didn't come to me naturally. I thought back to happier times when I was writing stories and acting them out with my friends, cutting up old clothes to make dresses that performers wear in plays, and building scenery out of old things we found. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.

The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music.

“Hello,” I heard a voice behind me say softly. I turned around to see a little girl standing behind me, eating an apple. But before I could make any response, Mrs. Windsor walked into the room in her usual urgent manner and announced,“Jennifer, this is my niece, Pasha. Pasha, this is Jennifer. Pasha will be giving you your lesson today. I'm up to my ears in something else!” she then exited to the kitchen.

Pasha set her apple down on the side table and slid beside me on the piano bench.

“What piece do you like best?” she asked.

“What do you mean?” I asked. “They're all the same to me. I don't know.”

“You mean you don't have a favorite?”

“No, not really.”

Pasha looked at me, rather puzzled, then opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys and studied the notes on the page for a moment. Then I frowned and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I have to admit I was a rather mechanical pianist.

After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?”I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn't know what she meant.

“Like a story. What story is being playing out within the music?”

“I guess I've never thought about it before. I don't know.”

“Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?”

Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she's picking flowers from the water's edge.” A carefree, happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha's dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fastflowing stream. Quickly, the princess's horse sees her plight (困境),” Pasha continued, “and races to the river's edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. They make it to the bank and she hug her faithful horse and swears she will never again wear princess, skirts that weigh her down. She will only wear jeans and Tshirt from now on.” Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me.

“Aren't you the girl who tells the stories?” she asked.

“I guess. I do tell a lot of stories.”

“Oh, yes! All the kids talk about them. I've heard about you. Well, all you have to do is learn to hear the stories in the music. That's all there is to it.”

“I've never thought it that way.”

“Let's try another one, shall we?” Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.

Every year on April 22, Earth Day is celebrated (庆祝) all over the world. It is a time to work towards keeping our earth clean. People plan projects to clean up the land, air and water.

US Senator Gaylord Nelson first thought of the idea for Earth Day in 1962 when he saw polluted rivers and cities covered with smoke. Senator Nelson needed to get support from Americans to clean up the earth. Finally, on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans celebrated the first Earth Day! Now many countries around the world celebrate it, and so can you.

How can you celebrate Earth Day? Here are a few ideas:

●Join a clean-up project — Clean up your street or a favorite beach.

●Save energy — Turn off the lights when you leave a room, and use public transportation. ●Use less water.

●Reduce(减少)/ Reuse (重复利用)/ Recycle(使再循环) — Practice the three Rs: First, reduce how much you use. Then reuse or recycle what you can.

You can make a difference on Earth Day and every day! 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) ( ) 56. When was the first Earth Day? ______
