Doodling(乱写乱画) Can Improve Memory(重点精读课文)

典型阅读结构破解:提出问题→得出结论→分析原因→给出建议

Doodling may look , but it can in fact be a sign of an alert mind (机灵的头脑). It may help you remember snippets (小片段) of key information.

Researchers carried out memory tests on 40 volunteers, asking them to listen to a telephone message. As they were listening to the message, half of the volunteers were encouraged to doodle on a piece of paper, while the other half didn’t doodle at all. Afterwards, both groups were asked to write down the names and the places mentioned. To everyone’s surprise, doodlers performed much better than non-doodlers.

So why? If you are doing a boring task, like listening to a dull meeting or conversation, you may not be engaged in (参与) it all the time. You may start to daydream such as visualizing (显现) your holidays. You may even end up nodding off (打盹). Those things distract you from the task , resulting in (导致) poor performance. A simple thing will be sufficient (足够的) to stop your daydreaming without affecting your performance on the main task. Doodling is such a simple thing, and so this . It can keep you more alert so that you are more likely to what is being said.

Well, next time you’re zoning out during a dull meeting, you’d better reach for a pen and doodle — and not just to ease your boredom.

In 2014, many countries adjusted their visa application process for Chinese people. Here we take a look at the countries that have made outbound traveling easier to Chinese passport holders.

The United States is serious about welcoming Chinese visitors and the economic opportunities they bring. During last month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting held in Beijing, President Barack Obama announced that China and the United States have reached an agreement on a reciprocal 10-year visa that allows multiple entries for tourists and businessmen.

China has a tremendous outbound travel market, accounting for 20 percent of the growth in overseas visits to the United States since 2008. Chinese travelers consistently rank the US as their top travel destination, but only slightly more than 1.8 percent of total outbound travelers have been to the US, according to the White House.

During Premier Li Keqiang’s state visit to Germany in October, the two countries agreed to try to shorten the visa process to 48 hours. Germany will also issue more long-term multiple-entry visas in the future.

Canada upgrades single-entry visas to multi-entry

The Canada Tourism Bureau began upgrading more single-entry visas to multi-entry ones earlier this year, hoping to attract more Chinese visitors. “The multi-entry visa will allow eligible visitors to stay in Canada for as long as six months per trip, and visa validity has been extended to a 10-year-maximum,” according to a bureau spokesperson.

Thailand waived visa fees for tourists from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan from August to October of 2014.

Japan further extends multiple-entry visas to Chinese tourists

Japan recently announced that it would further relax its policy to issue multiple-entry visas to Chinese tourists.

The multiple-entry visa to Chinese tourists was initiated in 2011 to help boost the economy of the areas affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The visa required tourists to stay at least overnight in Fukushima, Iwate or Miyagi. The tourists will be free to stay anywhere in Japan from their second visit onward.

The new visa policy is considering issuing multiple-entry visa to individuals with strong purchasing power, with no attached condition to visit the three places.

Morocco looks to offer individual visas to Chinese tourists

From March 6 this year, Chinese service passport holders have not needed a visa to enter Morocco, a first step in making entry to the country easier.

The country also looks to attract more tourists from China, and plans granting individual visas to Chinese tourists, said Salaheddine Mezouar, Foreign Affairs Minister of Morocco. Currently, Chinese tourists must come in groups to apply for Moroccan tourism visa.

Arriving late at a friend’s wedding, I wriggled my way through the crowd to congratulate him and his love. Waving at him over a number of heads, I overheard the new bride say: “I’ve got it!” Turning, I saw her, showing the golden ring in the manner of a hunter waving a hunted animal.

This idea of marriage as a victory was alien to me. The first child of a family so depressive that I left home at 16, I had come to regard marriage as a box in which women were kept. Yes, I had been conditioned by the same fairytales and their prejudiced view of a woman’s life—one that ends at her wedding—but I had also seen what can happen after a wedding. Love, I decided, was safe only when experienced at a distance.

In terms of suffering, my experience was not unusual. The latter half of the 20th century forever changed the landscape of marriage. Contraception(避孕), ease of travel, the domestic incorporation of screen-based technologies (television, computers), and practice of nofault divorces were some of the

Chinese passport opens more doors in 2014

In 2014, many countries adjusted their visa application process for Chinese people. Here we take a look at the countries that have made outbound traveling easier to Chinese passport holders. Up to 10-year US visa for Chinese tourists and businessmen

Germany speeds up visa process for Chinese passport

Thailand waived visa fees for Chinese tourists for three months

56. Which of the following countries has improved efficiency of application process?

A. Germany.

B. Japan.

C. Canada.

D. Morocco.

57. We can learn from the passage that ________.

A. 20 percent of outbound travelers from China have visited the US since 2008

B. Canada has adjusted its visa application process by reducing the required documentation C. individuals with strong purchasing power will be free to stay anywhere in Japan for their first visit D. Chinese tourists can enter Morocco without a visa on condition that they go there in groups

58. Why do many countries introduce easier visa policies for Chinese visitors?

A. They want to show respect for China.

B. They intend to maintain good relationship with China. C. They hope this will encourage their local economy.

D. They expect to strengthen cooperation in different fields with China.

Contraception(避孕), ease of travel, the domestic incorporation of screen-based technologies (television, computers), and practice of nofault divorces were some of the factors that changed people’s expectations of each other and themselves.

In the following unrest, the communities that had helped marriages in times of difficulty broke down. Women who had once formed supportive social networks to help each other with their children were now in offices for most of the day; their children were enrolled in daycare and the aged placed in homes. The sense of liberation was matched only by alienation. Priorities had shifted from the human to the material.

All around me, marriages were swelling and disintegrating, like paper in water.

There was also the awareness that we were part of something greater than ourselves. Legally and socially, marriage provided us with a framework. And yet it is still considered as no more than “ a piece of paper”. But marriage is not about religion or gender; it is a commitment and a social stabilizer .

The fact that marriage survived the 20th century is a testament to faith—in ourselves, in others, and in the relevance of devotion. For in the end, every marriage stands or falls on the capacity for devotion. And it is hard to remain dedicated to an ideal. There are days when I would happily trade my husband for an Alexander McQueen bag. And then there are days I think of him as my witness, my partner, the door to joy. Marriage is never unchanging. 59. What is the cost of the sense of liberation according to the passage? A. The precious time with families. B. The excitement of marriage. C. The achievements in careers. D. The enjoyment of pursuing money.

60. Which of the following is NOT the factor that changed the landscape of marriage?

A. Women had to go out to work.

B. Nofault divorces were widely practiced. C. People could travel around as they liked. D. Many people did not have time to watch TV. 61. What is the author’s opinion of marriage?

A. Marriage is not a promise and can not keep social stability. B. Mutual faith determines whether the marriage succeeds or not. C. Marriage is a box which keeps both men and women from escaping.

D. Marriage is a relationship between men and women which is unaffected by surroundings.

C

Insects trapped in fossilized amber (琥珀) for tens of millions of years have provided the key to creating a new generation of antibiotic drugs that could start a war against modern diseases. Scientists have isolated the antibiotics from microbes(微生物) found either from these insects or in soil particles trapped with them when they were caught by sticky tree resin up to 130 million years ago.

Present-day antibiotics have nearly all been isolated from microbes that use them as a form of defense against their enemies and competitors. But since the introduction of antibiotics into medicine 50 years ago, an alarming number have become ineffective because many bacteria have developed resistance to the drugs. Research over the past two years has uncovered at least four antibiotics from the microbes and one has been able to kill modern drug-resistant bacteria that can cause potentially deadly diseases in humans.

Raul Cano, who has pioneered the research at the California Polytechnic State University, said the ancient antibiotics had been successful in fighting drug-resistant strains of staphylococcus (葡萄球菌), a “superbug” that had threatened the health of patients in hospitals across the globe. He now intends to establish whether the antibiotics might have side effects. “The problem is how toxic they are to other cells and how easy they are to purify”, said Cano.

Cano’s findings have been acknowledged as a breakthrough. A biotechnology company, Ambergene, has been set up to develop the antibiotics into drugs. If any ancient microbes are revived(复活) that resemble present-day disease, they will be destroyed in case they escape and cause new epidemics. Drug companies will be anxious to study the chemical structures of the prehistoric antibiotics to see how they differ from modern drugs. They hope that one ancient molecule could be used as a basis to produce a range of drugs.

However, even the use of ancient antibiotics may not stop the rise of drug-resistant bacteria. Stuart Levy warned that the bacteria would eventually evolve to fight back against the new drugs. “There might also be an enzyme already out there that can degrade it. So the only way to keep the life of that antibiotic going is to use it sensibly and not excessively,” he said.

62. What problem has man faced since the use of antibiotics as medicine according to the passage?

A. Antibiotics are very difficult to purify. B. Antibiotics do harm to human health.

C. Antibiotics resemble some disease-causing bacteria.

D. Antibiotics are becoming less effective in fighting against bacteria. 63. Why are Cano’s findings considered as a breakthrough in science?

A. His discoveries will help revive ancient microbes.

B. His discoveries will put an end to the rise of drug-resistant bacteria. C. The company Ambergene has applied the prehistoric antibiotics to drugs.

D. The prehistoric antibiotics proved more deadly against drug-resistant modern bacteria. 64. According the last paragraph, what is Stuart Levy’s attitude towards the use of ancient antibiotics?

A. Cautious.

B. Contradictory.

C. Confident.

D. Critical.

65. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. Antibiotics—Dangerous or Not?

B. Biotechnology Revealed Prehistoric Secrets. C. Insect Antibiotics and Bacteria Evolution. D. Prehistoric Insects Might Help Invent New Drugs.
