Prospectus of Fuyang Teachers College

As a regional center in the Northwest of Anhui Province and a birthplace of many outstanding people, Fuyang enjoys a long cultural history, enriched by the heritage handed down from such famous cultural elites as Guanzi, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Cao Cao, Cao Pi, Cao Zhi, Ouyang Xiu and Zeng Gong. Located in Fuyang, Fuyang Teachers College boasts pleasant environment, easy traffic and favorable location with Ancient Yingzhou West Lake, Beijing-Kowloon railway and a 4C-grade airport in the vicinity.
Founded in 1956, the college began to enroll students in undergraduate programs in 1977. Under the approval of the State Council, it was renamed as Fuyang Teachers College in 1978 and was among the first batch of higher-learning institutions to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2001, the college passed the Undergraduate Education Qualification Assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education, and was awarded the second prize of National Educational Achievements in 2005. In 2008, the college passed the Undergraduate Education Level Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education with “Grade A”, and was officially approved to offer Master's degrees in 2013. In the past 50 plus years since its founding, the college, publicly known as “a cradle of basic education, a base for talent nurturing, an incubator of technological innovation and a window on cultural construction in Northern Anhui”, has brought up more than eighty thousand graduates who have been widely acknowledged as the backbones in all walks of life.
Covering an area of 978,000 square meters, Fuyang Teachers College comprises Qinghe and West Lake campuses with a floor area of 545,000 square meters and a student population of 18,500 from all over the country. It has 14 schools, one educational department and one continuing education college with 56 undergraduate programs in such ten disciplines as Literature, Science, Pedagogy, Economics, Administration, History, Law, Engineering, Agronomy and Artistic Science. Three of these first-class disciplines are authorized to confer Master's degrees. The college also has one independently-running college—College of Information Engineering with 22 undergraduate programs and 7,377 students.
The college has three provincial key disciplines (i.e., Ancient Chinese Literature, Educational Economy and Management, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), three featured specialty construction projects at the national level (i.e., Physics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and Chinese Language Education), one National Off-campus Practice Base for College Students, and seven provincial research institutions (i.e., Anhui Anti-aging Chinese Herbal Medicine Technology and Engineering Research Center, Provincial Embryonic Developmental and Reproductive Mediation Key Laboratory, Provincial Degradation and Monitoring of Environmental Pollutants Key Laboratory, Provincial Regional Logistics and Modern Logistics Engineering Key Laboratory, and three provincial key research bases for humanities and social sciences: Northern Anhui Culture Research Center, Center for Migrant Workers Studies and Anhui Martial Arts Culture Research Center). In addition, the college's teaching facilities and scientific research equipments are worth CNY 128 million, and its library has a collection of 1.97 million books, 8,870 newspapers and magazines in both Chinese and foreign languages, and free access to 33 Chinese and foreign electronic resources databases such as Chinese Journal Full-text Database, and Superstar Digital Library.
The number of faculty members, administrative and supporting staff is about 1,286, among whom 966 are full-time teachers (including 313 professors and associate professors, 125 with doctor's degree and 707 with master's degree). Eighty-six teachers are or have earned the titles of state-level candidates of the “New Century Hundred, Thousand, and Ten-thousand Talents Project”, “Provincial Academic and Technological Leading Teacher” or candidates, “Provincial Excellent Talent”, recipients of special allowances offered by the State Council or Anhui Provincial government, “National Outstanding Teacher”, “Provincial-level Outstanding Teacher”, or “Provincial-level Excellent Teacher” respectively. More than 60 teachers are master supervisors. Moreover, the college engages 114 adjunct professors, including Liu Depei, academician and vice president of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chen Guoliang and Fang Weihai, academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The college attaches great importance to teaching and scientific research. Through consistent improving of scientific research stimulus and governing mechanisms, the college's teaching research and scientific and technological innovativeness have been significantly enhanced. In the past five years, the college has undertaken 51 teaching research projects at the provincial level and above, and won 26 provincial educational achievement awards. It has undertaken 800 plus scientific research projects at various levels, among which 214 are at provincial level or above, and won 321 awards for its research achievements including “Anhui Technological Progress Award”, and “Anhui Social Sciences Literature and Art Award”, published 138 academic books and 2,667 research papers with 882 carried on the Category II journals and 200 indexed by SCI and EI. The college also sponsors three journals and newspapers: Fuyang Teachers College Journal (social science and natural science editions), Fuyang Teachers College News and Anhui Basic Education.
The college continuously deepens the reform in education by strengthening the features of fostering talents through social practices, and the quality of its graduates has been greatly increased. In the past five years, undergraduates of the college have won 825 awards in various disciplinary competitions at provincial level and above, including 119 national awards in such events as the First National Competition of Professional Skills for Normal University Students, National College English Contest, and Freescale Cup National Smart Automobile Competition, the award rank and quantity of the disciplinary competitions are at the top among the colleges and universities of its kind in the province. Undergraduates of the College have headed 625 scientific research projects including 28 national projects in National Undergraduate Training Programs for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, published 31 research papers, and won 18 patents for invention. Twenty-six undergraduates started their own businesses when in college. The graduates from the college have been widely acknowledged for their swift role transition, strong practical ability and sustainable development potential.
The college consistently fosters dynamic and healthy campus culture with the socialist orientation in running the school. It encourages students to participate in diversified extracurricular activities such as “Future Teacher Professional Skills Contest”, and “College Students Technology, Culture and Arts Festival”, and earns many honorary titles such as “Leading Unit of Social Practice in National College Students Volunteer Work for ‘Three Popularizes'” (that is, to popularize knowledge on technology, culture and hygiene in the countryside), “Provincial Model Unit”, “Provincial Leading Institution of Higher Learning in Party Construction and Ideological Education”, “Anhui Provincial Excellent Teaching Administrative Unit”, “Leading Unit in Graduates Employment Work Among Institutions of Higher Learning in Anhui Province”, and “Pacesetter in Graduates Employment Work Among Institutions of Higher Learning in Anhui Province” in consecutive years.
At a new historic starting point, the college will hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and comprehesively implement the guidelines of the Eighteenth National Party Congress and the third plenary session of the Eighteenth CPC Central Committee, taking Deng Xiaoping Theory, the important thought of Three Represents and the Scientific Outlook on Development as its guide. The college will continue to adhere to the guiding principles in education of the Party, and comprehensively implement the strategic plans laid down in the Fifth College Party Congress, taking moral education as a fundamental task of education, and giving priority to talent nurturing and discipline construction. The college will follow the development path of strengthening the connotation construction, highlighting distinctive features and accelerating transformations, strengthen its strong points in teacher education programs, and actively develop applied disciplines in a bid to cultivate high quality personnel with strong social responsibility awareness, innovative spirit and practical ability, and develop itself into a high-level domestically-known teaching-centered university with its own distinctive features.
