Jane Eyre is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë. It was published in London, England, in 1847 with the title Jane Eyre. An Autobiography under the pen name "Currer Bell". The Penguin edition describes it as an "influential

feminist text" because of its in-depth exploration of a strong female character's feelings.

The novel merges elements of three distinct genres. It has the form of a

Bildungsroman, a story about a child's maturation, focusing on the emotions and experiences that accompany growth to adulthood. The novel also contains much social criticism, with a strong sense of morality at its core, and finally has the brooding and moody quality and Byronic character typical of Gothic fiction.

It is a novel often considered ahead of its time due to its portrayal of the development of a thinking and passionate young woman who is both

individualistic, desiring for a full life, while also highly moral. Jane evolves from her beginnings as a poor and plain woman without captivating charm to her mature stage as a compassionate and confident whole woman. As she matures, she comments much on the complexities of the human condition. Jane also has a deeply pious personal trust in God, but is also highly self-reliant. Although Jane suffers much, she is never portrayed as a damsel in distress who needs rescuing. For this reason, it is sometimes regarded as an important early feminist (or proto-feminist) novel.

Analysis of Jane Eyre

Purpose and Significance of study:

Jane Eyre is a classical work produced in Victorian time by Charlotte Bronte. This novel has attracted widely attention and discussions for over 150 years after its publishment. On the surface, Jane Eyre is a love story about a poor young woman Jane Eyre and a rich man Mr. Rochester. But when we read it carefully, we can find out much deeper connotation, and we can understand that this work is not only a simple love story, but also reflects some social situations. Especially was the problem of the relationship between women and the traditional morality in Victorian time. In this novel, Bronte expresses strong dissatisfaction for females’ unequal social status, and Jane Eyre was her own embodiment to resist the oppression of the social traditional morality and to break the age’s fetter. And this novel also reflects that at that time, women have been already realized they should struggle for their independence of spirit and equal rights on many aspects in the social life. This thesis according to expounding the females’ situations under the traditional morality in Victorian age and the analysis of heroine’s behavior and thinking which broke the traditional morality at that time in Jane Eyre, to find the appearance of feminine consciousness and the demands of women for having equal social status like men in society and getting independence of life and spirit.

Situation of study:

Jane Eyre is a famous work by Charlotte Bronte, and this novel was published in 1847 and became an immediate success. Through this novel the author told a love story about a young orphan Jane Eyre who grew up, went to school, worked, married, and created the life for herself to readers with autobiographic form. In Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte expresses strong sympathy for the working class and the poor,

forcefully condemns both upper-class exploitation and arrogance. Jane is a typical Victorian literature’s rebellious heroine, and her unique character make this novel have permanent attraction.

In the history of English literature, the Victorian Age produced a group of women novelists. How women were regarded and regarded themselves as members of society became one of the chief concerns of writers in that period. Charlotte Bronte was one of them. Her works shows the women’s power and the resistance to men’s oppressions. In Jane Eyre, the autobiographic novel, by Jane Eyre’s telling to readers Charlotte Bronte expresses her own mind that women are powerful and women should not be controlled by traditional rules.

This thesis will research the “unwomanly” character of the heroine under the Victorian traditional morality. All of Jane’s behaviors showed her difference from traditional morality. In such a period, a little girl struggled for her equal rights in her guardian’s family; a student made efforts to improve the living condition of school; a young governess pursued her real love and refused the proposal of the man she did not love. All of these behaviors disobeyed the traditional morality in Victorian age. She broke the model of “angel in the house” throughout her life. Her “unwomanly” character was also showed obviously. This image was also a symbol of feminine consciousness. Her “unwomanly” character showed the demand of women to gain their equal social rights and independence. By Jane, Bronte expresses the dissatisfaction to unfair treatment to female of the traditional morality. And through Jane, the feminine consciousness’s appearance of the author can be found clearly. Abstract:Jane Eyre,on the way to seek the ideal life of happiness.encounters many hardships and frustrations and takes a series of unyielding fights. The article, through the analysis of these fighting activities.reveals her characters:rebelliousness and righteousness.

Key Words: rebel;equality;women liberation

Introduction

In English novelist of 19 century Charlotte Bronte s representative work Jane Eyre, the author successfully traces the emotional and spiritual development of the heroine Jane Eyre.It describes her search for an identity as a woman supported by equal status and independent human dignity.Jane Eyre has a great influence upon the society at that time. For a long time, the image of Jane Eyre is favored by numerous readers very much. And Charlotte Bronte is famous for Jane Eyre.

At the time of Charlotte Brontes writing of Jane Eyre.in order to put down the worker's movement British bourgeois government took some reform measures on surface, such as adopting the act of ten hour's work for female labor. Bat the womens status in society at that time had not been improved rather than gaining the equal right.Though going through the Charter movement.whic

h had three climaxes and attracted millions of workers and labors to take part in to fight for equal right. It still wasn't able to solve the equality problem between men and women. In Jane Eyre Charlotte describes the experience of an orphan gir1.Through this orphan girl‟s experience. It reflects the miserable condition of British women at that time. Also through this orphan girl's seeking happy love life which finally become true,it reflects the demand of women of shaking off men„s oppress.Discrimination and striking for freedom and equality. In Britain where women has a extreme low status at that time.We cannot say it without a unique meaning.Through the analysis of these fighting activities of seeking equality.this article reveals her characteristic:rebellious and righteousness. At the same time reflects voice of ”women liberation”.

Through the whole story,we can divide Jane Eyre s experience into five segments l Gates head, Logwood.Thorn field.Moor house。and Fern dean. The plot is not complicated and fantastic in this story. Also the character of this kind is very common in the writer's generation. But Charlotte composes Jane Eyre's character, which is not of ordinary from universa1.Just as what she said to her two sisters at the time of composing Jane Eyre.”I'll write a female protagonist.she is as plain and small as me,but she will give rise to reader's interest as same as any female protagonist which you write.”Jane Eyre has a common appearance and owns for nothing. Why is she glorious? The reason for it is her outstanding and rebel personality. The author 'writing is mainly about the depiction of Jane's character.the exquisite description of her rich inner world. This kind of writing presents her lively personality to the readers. This article mainly appraise and analysis the character of rebelling for equality which runs through the beginning to the end.and make the readers know the

complicated road of heart of Jane Eyre and why she successes.Further advocate the spirit of self — reliant and self— progressive。

(一)I Brief description of the story

Jan Eyre first appears an orphan lodging with her aunt, who resents her and shamelessly favors her own children. Later,Jane is sent away to a charity school run by M r.brocklehursr, where through the harsh regime, she learns how to survive and eventually succeeds in becoming a teacher there herself. She advertises for a post as governess.and is appointed to care for Adele, the ward of the sardonic Edward Rochester at Thorn field Hal1.What attracts Rochester to Jane is not her Looks,as she is small and plain, but the honesty with which she speaks her mind, and her practical common sense, which enables her to save his life:above all, her wit and sensitivity, which help her cope with social and inter—— personal complexity. He proposes marriage, but she discovers at the altar that he already has a wife, Bertha。a lunatic woman who is kept in the attic at Thorn field. In her philosophy. Jane does not think it right to become Rochester s mistress and decides to leave Thorn field. At the critical moment of her life.she is rescued by the Rivers family, who coincidently turn out to cousin and tell Jane that she is the heiress to a decent sum of money sufficient to five her the economic security for life.St.John Rivers, who is planning to go to India as a missionary, asks her to marry him and follow him in his calling. On the point of accepting the offer, Jane hears a supernatural cry form Rochester. She rushes back to Thorn field only to find that the house has been burned down by Bertha, and Rochester himself has been maimed and blinded in an unsuccessful attempt to save his wife. Now Jane decides that it is time that she can marry him.

Jane Eyre s character of rebelling for equality runs through the novel from the beginning to the end.In unfair Gates head Jane rebels for equality I in Logwood which has vile environment further build her character of rebelling for equality;it is a distillation of her personality in Thorn- field;and in Moor house it reflects the pursuit of Jane Eyre.It is seeking equality that makes she resist destiny, the personality of rebellious makes her emotion life up and down.

(二)Rebel for equality

From the beginning of the story,Jane Eyre is an orphan without parents.brothers and sisters. As an orphan whom Mrs. Reed doesn‟t prefer to adopt,Jane is an “external person‟‟ an “alien‟‟ “a person rather than servant”. In Gates head, she does not have a explicit position and identity. She lives upon others under the cold shoulder and loser intimation of the Aunts Reed. She is weak and plain no one likes her. Reality brings up her into a personality of solitary, sensitive and obstinate. This make her immature heart value herself especially in a early time.cherish her right and dignity as a human especially. She does not feel good about this environment, but she is not able to change it. The servants keep admonishing Jane Eyre that she is under that obligation of Mrs. Reed. She recalls:„‟ My very first recollections of existence included hints of the same kind. This reproach of my dependence had become a vague singsong in m y ear;very painful and crushing.but only half intelligible.”L She does not yield, restrain herself to her circumstance at an early age, instead of that she makes a question sensitively:”Why was I always suffering, always browbeaten, always accused, for exercondemned? ‟Why could I never please?‟ She uses a pair of eyes of early — maturing child and a pure child s heart to observer and judge things around.Experiencing others feeling towards

her, undergoing depression even enmity. She has a rich inner world but no one to tel1. gradually bring up a personality of quiet and indifferent outside but passionate heart inside. This kind of ego mentality formed at an early age becomes a root in Jane Eyre s young heart.but she has a severe dignity and self—respect when facing unequal treatment. She does not yield to the circumstance.Confronting the unreasonable beating of her overbearing brutal cousin John,Jane attacks bravely eyen madly.Though she knows‟‟ a moment's mutiny has al- ready rendered her liable to strange penalties, and likes any other rebel slave, she feels resolves,in her desperation,to go all lengths.‟。E23( ‟What makes this little orphan girl who lives on other people has SO many courage that brave enough to fight against her benefactor's son? That is called human dignity and sanctity, she can t endure that trample of human dignity and sanctity just because she is an orphan and lives on her aunt. So she has the movement, which is out of ordinary in other's eyes. The revolt spirit which forms as a child makes her Learn to use severe and critical way to treat the behavior of the aunts l full of enmity to their ill treatment and humiliation and penetrating the despicable heart of the elder generation with keenness and insight which is out of her age. When there happen a quarrel between her and Mrs Reed. Mrs Reed thinks she could make Jane frightened by her status but wholly opposite.Jane Eyre is brave to say to her aunt:‟‟I am not deceitful:if 1 were,J shall say I love you;but I declare I do not love you;I dislike you the worst of anybody in the world except John Reed ” People think you a good woman. but you are, hard — hearted.”Eli(P46)She tells bravery unconscionable act Mrs Reed has done to her. This nd of behavior makes this rich madam even afraid. Also Jane Eyre herself tastes the complicated joyous

She never gives in on her way. Though she has little figure, Jane Eyre is huge in soul. She pursues true love and is loyal and steadfast to her beloved man. Her kindness, intelligence, and independence attract the hero. At last she gets a perfect love. On the other hand, Jane Eyre felt tiny and low about her out - looking, which firstly showed us her self – abasement.

Introduction

Charlotte Bronte was one of the great female writers in English literature. Her masterpiece, Jane Eyre, has been translated into many languages. Jane Eyre is the heroine of this novel; she represents the disillusion of feminism. This novel successfully portrays a new image of woman, who is bravely against the social prejudice. Jane Eyre pursues equality, liberty and independence. She pursues the free and equal love. Jane shows her resistance when she faces the Leeds‘ ill-treat and the inhuman treatment at the Lowood .In Thornfield she refuses Mr. Rochester‘s proposal, and then the St.John as well. The two are the concentrative representations of Jane‘s resistance. But she lives in a society where man is the master, she can‘t keep herself out of the influence of man‘s power and religious ideology .So there are also self-abasement and weakness in her characteristic.

It has high appraisal in literature history. The novel narrates Jane Eyre’s life experiences from an orphan to an independent woman. She was unfortunate when she was born, because she lost her parents and was sent to her aunt’s family, where she was heartlessly treated. Jane Eyre is little, ugly, timid, and is a “little thing” having no clear identity. All the power presses her, strangles her personality. But Jane Eyre is not destroyed by the ugly fact, and she is not over-whelmed by difficulties. On the contrary, she learns how to live and how to be strong. And she has the courage to struggle with the pressure. Jane Eyre cuts a completely new woman image. She represents those middle-class working women who are struggling for recognition of their basic right and equality as a human being.Jane Eyre’s love is

the other aspect this paper will talk about. She is very poor, so she has nothing except the power of individual spirit. In her view, love must be based on mutual understanding and equality. Love is not only acquaintance, but also it needs equality. She cannot accept the kindness of martial. It is the shame for her and blasphemy to her self-respect. It is necessary that it have self-respect for love. Jane Eyre’s departure doesn’t deny her sincere love, but deny the inequality of marriage, and the dependence after marriage. In addition to love, Jane Eyre pursues the equality on economy, personality and social status. She believes in equality between men and women. This paper, firstly, talks about the author and the general idea about Jane Eyre briefly. Secondly, the most important part in this thesis, it mainly analyzes the character of Jane Eyre from the following aspects: (1) self-respect and confidence of Jane Eyre; (2) Jane Eyre's love and her view on love; (3) the independence of Jane Eyre; (4) Jane Eyre's view on equality between man and woman. It will make the image of Jane Eyre much more vivid and bright. Finally, it is the conclusion of this paper.I. The Introduction to Jane EyreJane Eyre is written by Charlotte Bronte, one of the most famous female workers in Britain. It is an autobiography novel and it has high appraisal in literature.A. The Introduction to Its AuthorCharlotte Bronte (1816-1855) was one of the most famous female workers in English literature. In this period of tense class struggle appeared a new literary trend-critical realism English critical realism of the 19th century flourished in the forties and in the early fifties. The critical realists described with much vividness and great artistic skill the chief traits of the England society and criticized the capitalist system from a democratic viewpoint. She created several works, such as Shirley (1849), Villette (1853), The Professor (1857). Her works are all about the struggle of an individual consciousness toward self-realization, about some lonely and neglected young women with a longing for love. Jane Eyre is her typical works. It is an autobiography novel. It was written in the year 1846.B. The Brief Introduction to Jane EyreJane Eyre, as a plain orphan, is cruelly treated in childhood by her aunt, Mrs. Reed, a harsh and unsympathetic woman on whom she is depend. Because Jane reacts strongly against the unliable aunt’s bad treatment, she is sent away to a charity school, Lowood Charity. There she suffers a lot both physically and mentally, only consoled by a kind teacher, Miss Temple. Jane Eyre stays at the school for 8 years, and then becomes governess at Thorn field Hall. Mr. Rochester, the master of the house, is fascinated by her wit and courageous spirit and falls in love with her. This is the same with her. But their marriage is prevented by the revelation that he has had a wife, a raving mad woman, still alive. Shocks and deeply hu

rt, Jane makes up her mind to leave him and flees to the Moor House. There Rivers family takes her in. St. John Rivers, a very handsome clergyman who is determined to devote himself to God, almost succeeds in making her agree to marry him. But she refuses and finally goes back to Rochester, who is a blind and free man. Then they marry and live a content life.II. A Detailed Analysis of the Character of Jane EyreIn this novel, the author makes a female image that is against social pressure. Jane Eyre is an orphan child with a fiery spirit and a longing to love and be loved. She is plain and poor. On her way to seeking the ideal life of happiness, she encounters many hardships and frustrations, and takes a series of unyielding fights. She is brave, enthusiastic enough to change her tragic fate through her own strong unyielding rebellious character. All appraise her fiery spirit, her hatred of self-righteousness, her love of truth, and her yearning independence and equality.A. Self-Respect and Self-Confidence of Jane EyreAs a young girl, she is ill treated by her aunt, however, Jane Eyre finds her boundless confidence and tough spirit, and a kind of inner power cannot be defeated. Her self-respect is related to her life environment. She is poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul. In her opinion, everyone is the same at God’s feet. Though there are differences in status, in property and also in appearance, all the human beings are equal in personality. She never feels herself inferior to Rochester though she is a humble family teacher. On the contrary, she thinks they are fair. Everybody should respect each other. In fact, her uprightness, loftiness and sincerity, shakes Rochester and makes him think she is a very woman who can talk fairly in spirit. The heroine is moved by his whole-hearted. They fall in love deeply. At the time of marrying, she finds the fact that Rochester has had a wife. She tells herself she must leave. She says to Rochester like this: I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself. I will keep the law given by God; sanctioned by man. I will h-old to the principles received by men when I was sane, and not mad-as I am now, laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation: they are for such moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigor; stringent are they; inviolate they shall be. If at my individual convenience I might break them, what would be their worth. Preconceived opinions, foregone deter-minations, are all I have at this hour to stand by: there I plant my foot. (Charlotte Bronte, 2003)From the short passage, it can be seen Jane Eyre finds she is deceived; her self-respect is made fun of, because she loves Mr. Rochester sincerely. No one can bear this by his closest lover. But Jane Eyre can. What’s more, she makes a very rational decision. Under so beautiful love, the tempt

ation with rich life, she persists in her self-respect. At the end of this novel, though Thorn field is destroyed and Rochester himself is disabled, in this circumstance, Jane Eyre is in a dilemma no longer between love and self-respect. At the same time, she feels satisfied: she gets love and respect when they get marry. That is Jane Eyre, a strong woman, a short and small woman, having strong self-respect. She pursues a kind of bright, sincere and beautiful life unswerving. Actually, she isn’t pretty; the ordinary appearance doesn’t make others feel good to her of course, even her own aunt feels disgusted with her. But she is obviously prettier than the plain and ugly governess. As she says: Do you think, because I’m poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul as you, -and full as much heart! And if god had gifted me with some beauty, and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you through the medium of custom, conversation, nor even of mortal flesh: -it is my spirit that addressed your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet-equal, -as we are!”(Charlotte Bronte, 2003)This is the idea of equality in Jane Eyre’s mind. God does not give her beauty and wealth, but instead, God gives her a kind mind and a thinking brain. Her idea of equality and self-respect impresses us so much and lets us feel the power inside her body. Though one’s beauty on the face can make others feel that one is attractive and charming, if his or her mind isn’t the same beautiful as the appearance, for example, beauty cannot last forever, when others find that the beauty which has charmed them is only a falsity; it’s not true, they will like the person no more. For a long time, only a person’s great virtue, noble soul, beautiful heart can be called as an everlasting beauty, just as William Shakespeare said that beauty lived with kindness (You Ruiyun, 1999). We cannot distinguish whether a man is of nobleness or humbleness, but as there are great differences in our souls, and from that we can know that whether a man is noble or ordinary, and even obscure, that is, whether he is beautiful or not.B. Jane Eyre’s Love and Her View on LoveLove is the most beautiful characteristic of human beings’ life. And love cannot be measured by status, power or property. To most people, they like to seek a meaningful, romantic relationship resulting in love, commitment, companionship and happiness. For people, it is most important that a man and a woman have heart and feelings that find a perfect response, and also have mutual affinity. Everyone is eager to get a beautiful, romantic, happy and everlasting love. This novel is not an ordinary love story. Jane Eyre and Rochester get true love after a lot of sufferings. After ac

quaintance, then attracting each other, and falling in love deeply, they meet many obstacles. From Jane Eyre’s experiences, it was obvious that her relatives did not love her when she was a child. But it is just her childhood experiences that affect her character and later life. In fact, she is a kind girl who brings love to people around her. Mr. Rochester is an unfortunate man who has tied to a mad woman for fifteen years. He spends ten years traveling all over Europe, looking for a good and intelligent woman to love. When he finally meets Jane Eyre who appears and insists on helping him when his horse slips and falls on the ice, he begins to depend on this little figure for his happiness and new interest in life. But God plays joke on him. His wedding is ruined and Jane Eyre leaves him. He is alone again. Jane Eyre loves Rochester deeply from the beginning to the end. There should be no distinction of property, rank or age in true love. Mr. Rochester, who has rich experiences and wisdom, is softhearted, wealthy and in high rank as well as having pride and rudeness. He is older than Jane Eyre by nearly 20 years and can be her father. Jane Eyre loves him, not because his wealth and high rank, but because he treats her equally and in a friendly manner, although she is very poor and in low position. She is such an excellent girl, good, intelligent, considerate, that Rochester is attracted. It is Jane Eyre but not anyone else who Rochester loves. After his travel around Europe, and his life with his mistresses, he finds Jane Eyre. Mr. Rochester says:After a youth and man-hood passed half in unutterable misery and half in dreary solitude, I have for the first time found what I can may love-I have found you. You are my sympathy-my better self-my good angel. I am bound to you with a strong at-tachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my center and spring of life, wraps my existence about you-and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one. (Charlotte Bronte, 2003)It is obvious that Rochester loves Jane Eyre deeply.Perhaps there is a question: now that Rochester loves Jane whole-hearted, he should not deceive her. He should tell her the truth that he had a legal wife. But in the social background, people pay too much attention to property, rank and status. If the disparity is great, a pair of lovers would suffer disagreements from their families and their friends. Such as Mrs. Fairfax, one of Rochester’s servants is very surprised and feels puzzled that her master is madly clinging to Jane. But both of them don’t care about the difference of status and property or others’ opinion. They pursue true love. They overcome the obstacles. In theory they are happy to be married, but their marriage is destroyed by a mad woman. His wife is alive. Rochester tells the fact to her, and he

■ 1 The red room

We could not go for a walk that afternoon. There was such a freezing cold wind, and such heavy rain, that we all stayed indoors.I was glad of it.I never liked long walks, especially in winter.I used to hate coming home when it was almost dark, with ice-cold fingers and toes, feeling miserable bccause Bessie, the nursemaid, was always scolding me.All the time I knew I was different from my cousins,Eliza,John and Georgiana Reed. They were taller and stronger than me,and they were loved.

These three usually spent their time crying and quarrelling, but today they were sitting quietly around their mother in the sitting-room.I wanted to join the family circle, but Mrs Reed,my aunt, refused Bessie had complainted about me.

'No,I'm sorry,Jane.Until I hear from Bessie,or see for myself, that you are really trying to behave better, you cannot be treated as a good, happy child, like my children.' 'What does Bessie say I have done?'I asked.

'Jane,it is not polite to question me in that way.If you cannot speak pleasantly,be quiet.' I crept out of the sitting-room and into the small room next door, where I chose a book full of pictures from the bookcase. I climbed on to the window-seat and drew the curtains,so that I was completely hidden.I sat there for a while.Sometimes I looked out of the window at the grey November afternoon, and saw the rain pouring down on the leafless garden. But most of the time I studied the book and stared, fascinated,at the pictures.Lost in the world of imagination,I forgot my sad, lonely existence for a while, and was happy,I was only afraid that my secret hiding-place might be discovered.

Suddenly the door of the room opened.John Reed rushed in.

'Where are you, rat?'he shouted. He did not see me behind the curtain.'Eliza!Georgy!Jane isn't here!Tell Mamma she's run out into the rain—what a bad animal she is!'

'How lucky I drew the curtain,'I thought. He would never have found me,because he was not very intelligent. But Eliza guessed at once where I was.

'She's in the window-seat,John,'she called from the sitting-room.So I came out immediately,as I did not want him to pull me out.

'What do you want?'I asked him.

'Say,“What do you want,Master Reed”,'he answered,sitting in an armchair.'I want you

to come here.'

John Reed was fourteen and I was only ten.He was large and rather fat.He usually ate too much at meals, which made him ill.He should have been at boarding school, but his mother, who loved him very much, had brought him home for a month or two, because she thought his health was delicate.

John did not love his mother or his sister, and he hated me He bullied and punished me,not two or three times a week, not once or twice a day,but all the time.My whole body trembled when he came near.Sometimes he hit me,sometimes he just threatened me,and I lived in terrible fear of him.I had no idea about how to stop him.The servants did not want to offend their young master, and Mrs Reed could see no fault in her dear boy.

So I obeyed John's order and approached his armchair, thinking how very ugly his face was.Perhaps he understood what I was thinking, for he hit me hard on the face.

'That is for your rudeness to Mamma just now,'he said,'and for your wickedness in hiding, and for looking at me like that, you rat!'I was so used to his bullying that I never thought of hitting him back.

'What were you doing behind that curtain?'he asked.

'I was reading,'I answered.

'Show me the book.'I gave it to him.

'You have no right to take our books,'he continued.'You have no money and your father left yor none. You ought to beg in the streets, not live here in comfort with a gentleman's family.Aayway, all these books are mine, and so is the whole house,or will be in a few years'time.I'll teach you not to borrow my books again.'He lifted the heavy book and threw it hard at me.

It hit me and I fell, cutting my head on the door.I was in great pain, and suddenly for the first time in my life,I forgot my fear of John Reed.

'You wicked,cruel boy!'I cried.'You are a bully!You are as bad as a murderer!'

'What!What!'he cried.'Did she say that to me?Did you hear,Eliza and Georgiana?I'll tell Mamma,but first„'

He rushed to attack me,but now he was fighting with a desperate girl.I really saw him as a wicked murderer.I felt the blood running down my face, and the pain gave me strength.I fought back as hard as I could. My resistance surprised him,and he shouted for help. His sisters ran for Mrs Reed, who called her maid,Miss Abbott, and Bessie. They pulled us apart and I heard them say,'What a wicked girl! She attacked Master John!'

Mrs Reed said calmly,'Take her away to the red room and lock her in there.'And so I was carried upstairs, arms waving and legs kicking.

As soon as we arrived in the red room,I became quiet again, and the two servants both started scolding me.

'Really,Miss Eyre,'said Miss Abbott,'how could you hit him? He's your young master!' 'How can he be my master?I am not a servant!'I cried.

'No,Miss Eyre, you are less than a servant, because you do not work, replied Miss Abbott. They both looked at me as if they strongly disapproved of me.

'You should remember, miss,'said Bessie,'that your aunt pays for your food and clothes, and you should be grateful. You have no other relations or friends.'

All my short life I had been told this, and I had no answer to it.I stayed silent, listening to

these painful reminders.

'And if you are angry and rude,Mrs Reed may send you away,'added Bessie.

'Anyway,'said Miss Abbott,'God will punish you,Jane Eyre, for your wicked heart.Pray to God,and say you're sorry.'They left the room, locking the door carefully behind them. The red room was a cold, silent room, hardly ever used, although it was one of the largest bedrooms in the house.Nine years ago,my uncle,Mr Reed, had died in this room, and since then nobody had wanted to sleep in it.

Now that I was alone I thought bitterly of the people I lived with.John Reed, his sisters, his mother, the servants, they all accused me,scolded me,hated me.Why could I never please them?Eliza was selfish, but was respected.Georgiana had a bad temper, but she was popular with everybody because she was beautiful John was rude, cruel and violent, but nobody punished him.I tried to make no mistakes, but they called me,naughty every moment of the day.Now that I had turned against John to protect myself, everybody blamed me.

And so I spent that whole long afternoon in the red room asking myself why I had to suffer and why life was so unfair.Perhaps I would run away,or starve myself to death.

Gradually it became dark outside. The rain was still beating on the windows, and I could hear the wind in the trees. Now I was no longer angry, and I began to think the Reeds might be right.Perhaps I was wicked.Did I deserve to die,and be buried in the churchyard like my uncle Reed?I could not remember him,but knew he was my mother's brother, who had taken me to his house when my parents both died.On his death bed he had made his wife, aunt Reed, promise to look after me like her own children.I supposed she now regretted her promise.

A strange idea came to me.I felt sure that if Mr Reed had lived he would have treated me kindly, and now,as I looked round at the dark furniture and the walls in shadow,I began to fear that his ghost might come back to punish his wife for not keeping her promise. He might rise from the grave in the churchyard and appear in this room!I was so frightened by this thought that I hardly dared to breathe.Suddenly in the darkness I saw a light moving on the ceiling. It may have been from a lamp outside, but in my nervous state I did not think of that.I felt sure it must be a ghost,a visitor from another world. My head was hot,my heart beat fast. Was that the sound of wings in my ears? Was that something moving near me?Screaming wildly,I rushed to the door and shook it.Miss Abbott and Bessie came running to open it.

'Miss Eyre,are you ill?'asked Bessie.

'Take me out of here!'I screamed.

'Why?What's the matter?'she asked.

'I saw a light, and I thought it was a ghost,'I cried, holding tightly on to Bessie's hand. 'She's not even hurt,'said Miss Abbott in disgust.'She screamed just to bring us here.I know all her little tricks.'

'What is all this?'demanded an angry voice.Mrs Reed appeared at the door of the room.'Abbott and Bessie,I think I told you to leave Jane Eyre in this room till I came.' 'She screamed so loudly,ma'am,'said Bessie softly.

'Let go off her hands,Bessie,'was Mrs Reed's only answer.'Jane Eyre, you need not think you can succeed in getting out of the room like this.Your naughty tricks will not work with me.You will stay here an hour longer as a punishment for trying to deceive us.'

'Oh aunt, please forgive me!I can't bear it!I shall die if you keep me here„'I screamed and kicked as she held me.

'Silence!Control yourself!'She pushed me,resisting wildly, back into the red room and locked me in.There I was in the darkness again, with the silence and the ghosts.I must have fainted.I cannot remember anything more.
