How long are you willing to wait for a webpage to open before you start to lose

your patience? Half a minute? A few seconds? Google engineers have discovered that

even 400 milliseconds—as short as the blink of an eye—is too long for most Internet

users. A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. People hardly notice such a small

time difference, but it does cause them to stop searching, reported The New York Times.

"Without question, nobody likes to wait," said Arvind Jain, a Google engineer, "Every

millisecond matters."

Nowadays, millions of smart-phones and computers are continually gathering and

sending out information. With so many people downloading maps, sports videos, news

and restaurant suggestions, you can get digital "traffic jams". Meanwhile, users are

expecting faster and faster service.【2016年晋城中考状元】

Google found that if one website is 250 milliseconds slower than another website, people will visit it less often. This is why technology companies are now competing

to be the fastest. Google said people do expect different things from different

websites because they realize not all loading times are the same.

For example, a person will be more patient waiting for a video to load than for a search

result.

Even so, four out of five online users will click away if a video takes too long to

load. This makes it difficult for video websites to choose between the quality of pictures and fast loading times.

Trying to get a higher speed has always been part. of the history of the Internet.

In the 1990s, when the World Wide Web first started to become popular, it was very

crowded and slow; people called it the "World Wide Wait". But engineers managed to fight the problem with new inventions. They laid a lot of fiber optic cables(光缆)

for sending in high-speed; they improved software so it would work more smoothly; they

placed computer servers all around the world to be nearer to users; all this increased

speed.

Nowadays we can enjoy much faster Internet. Famous search engines such as Google and

Microsoft's Bing usually find search results in less than a second. However, in order

to meet the requirement of Internet users, these tycoons should never stop their steps.

26. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. The quality of pictures comes first for video websites.

B. Google is 250 milliseconds slower than other websites.

C. Microsoft's Bing is the fastest engine in the world now.

D. People are more likely to wait for loading films than maps. 27. The report from The New York Times suggests that . A. a millisecond is one thousandth of a second

B. 400 milliseconds is not so long for most Internet users

C. a millisecond has nothing to do with the Internet speed D. a millisecond really makes a difference to Internet users 28. The engineers did something to improve the speed, including .

①CD making software work more smoothly

② laying a number of fiber optic cables inside

③ placing computer servers throughout the world

④ developing the quality of pictures on the Internet

A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④

29. What does the underlined sentence mean?

A. Internet users are willing to see more search engines set up.

B. Google and Microsoft's Bing should help find the searching results.

C. These companies should mind their steps, or they will break down soon.

D. These companies need to catch up with the developing needs of internet users.

30. What can be the best title of this passage?

A. Don't make me "/retype/zoom/80c0cde65f0e7cd1852536c7?pn=4&x=0&y=0&raww=79&rawh=80&o=png_6_0_0_135_250_88_90_892.979_1262.879&type=pic&aimh=80&md5sum=10c60dcaff75d332df77a9864024b7b2&sign=26be1fa1d2&zoom=&png=665-1998&jpg=0-0" target="_blank">

1. Finally the officials told the farmers to kill the hawks.

2. Field mice eat not only chickens but also the farmers’ grain.

3. When the animals can’t find enough plants to eat in a place, they will starve or have to leave.

4. The number of animals changes much if people leave things as they are.

5. It is important for us to keep the balance of nature.【2016

1. 选T。根据句子 “Kill the hawks,” the officials said.

Robots aren’t only in the movies or on TV. One “real” robot recently married a couple at a wedding ceremony in Tokyo, Japan.

Fifty guests stood as the music played and the bride(新娘)walked down towards the groom(新郎). Only one guest stayed seated - the minister(牧师), who happened to be a robot. For this special ceremony, the four-foot tall robot named I-Fairy wore flowers around her head. I-Fairy’s eyes flashed colored lights as she pronounced the couple man-and-wife and asked the groom to kiss the bride. The wedding was the first time a marriage had been led by a robot, according to the company that built I-Fairy.

A robot might seem like an unusual choice to lead a wedding, but if you knew the couple you would think I-Fairy was the perfect choice. That’s because the groom teaches robotics at a university and the bride works for the company that built I-Fairy. The newly married couple hopes their wedding will encourage more uses for robots. They hope their wedding will give people ideas about ways in which they might use robots to do “everyday things” in their lives in the near future.

Yesterday evening, when I went to town with my mother, we met a strange old man. It was raining hard and we had no umbrella(伞). We were trying to get into a taxi when he came up to us. He was carrying a nice umbrella and he said that he would give it to us for only a pound. He had forgotten his wallet, he said, needed taxi-fare(出租汽车费) to go back home. My mother didn’t believe what he had said at first, and asked him a lot of questions. But the old man didn’t get into a taxi. We followed(跟随) him and found he went into a pub(小酒店) and bought himself a glass of whiskey (威士忌) with the pound. After he drank it, he put on his hat and took up one of the many wet umbrellas there and went off with the new one. Soon after that, he sold it again.

1. The old man sold an umbrella to the writer and her mother.

2. He gave it to them for only a pound because he had forgotten his wallet and needed taxi fare to go back home.

3. The umbrella was worth more than one pound.

4. The old man sold his own umbrella.

5. He was an honest man.

虽然文中不可直接找到答案,但由后文的bought himself a glass of whiskey (威士忌) with the pound.中pound前用的是the(那) 和he sold it again中的again(又)可推断出,作者和他母亲买了那个老人的伞。
