We may know that there are four basic periods(时期) for human beings to pass through when you enter and live in another country. This process helps you deal with culture shock(冲击).

Culture shock begins with the "honeymoon period". This is the time when you first arrive in a place where everything about the new cu1ture is strange and exciting. You see new things, hear new sounds and language, eat new kinds of food. This period can last for quite a long time because you feel very happy.

Unluckily, the second period can be more difficu1t. After you have got used to your new life, you can become very tired and begin to miss your motherland, your family, your friends, your pets and so on. Al1 the little prob1ems in life seem to be much bigger and more worrying when you face them in a foreign country. This period can be very difficult and lead to moving backwards quickly.

The third period is called the "adjustment period". This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the new country. Your sense of humor usually becomes stronger and you realize you are becoming stronger by 1earning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor.

The fourth period can be cal1ed "at ease at last". Now you feel quite comfortable in your new place. You can deal with most problems that you have. You may still have prob1ems with language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. At this time, you may feel a little uncomfortable if you go back to your motherland.

41. According to the passage, culture shock usually happens when you ______.

A. get married to a foreigner B. live in a big city

C. go to live in a foreign country D. meet foreigners in your motherland

42. During the first period of the process, you feel _________.

A. sad and lonely B. happy and excited

C. angry but strong D. easy but uncomfortable

43.You will find that you are a survivor in _______.

44.The fourth period can be regarded as a period of being _____.

During an earthquake, get under a strong object like the kitchen table. Don‟t leave the building during the shaking, or you might be hurt by falling objects from the outside of the building.

When you are in bed during the night and an earthquake happens, simply roll off the bed. There will be a safe around the bed.

If you are watching TV and you cannot easily run away by getting out through the door or window, then lie down and curl up(蜷伏) next to a sofa, or a large chair.

Never go to the stairs. The stairs are likely part of the building to be broken. Even if the stairs are not destroyed by the earthquake, they may fall down later when people run down.

Try to get into an open area away from trees, buildings, walls, advertisement boards and power lines if you are outdoors.

A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms (习语), though my teacher told us the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was shown in an amusing experience.

One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be surprised. Gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, he said,“You don‟t say!” “You don‟t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not a right topic. “Well, I‟d better change the topic.” So I said to him. “Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everyone back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was wonderful.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it.” Soon I was interrupted (打断) again by his words: “You don‟t say!” I couldn‟t help asking, “Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “Well, I didn‟t ask you to do so,” he answered, greatly surprised. I said, “Didn‟t you say „you don‟t say‟?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “ „You don‟t say‟ actually means „really!‟ It is an expression of surprise. Perhaps you don‟t pay attention to English idioms.” I realized I had made a fool of myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions. Remember: what the English teachers said is always right to us students.

Thousands of years ago, people didn‟t know that the Earth moved. They

thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios

was said to drive the sun around the sky with his chariot (战车). But

now, these ideas have all changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives

our “chariot” around the sky.

So what does all this mean? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the sun. It has special parts in its wings. These parts absorb power from the sun. They absorb so much power that they can carry on flying at night. In the Greek myths (希腊神话), Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we‟re finally even more efficient than the gods themselves.

This plane is called Solar Impulse (“太阳驱动”号). It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.

So why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy cause a few problems. If you live in China, you‟ve probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal or gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals (化学制品) from this make things work. But if we use the heat from the sun, we don‟t have to burn anything, and there‟s no pollution.

Solar energy is not all there yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn‟t run out. Solar Impulse could keep flying forever. Well, actually, the sun will run out too, one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That‟s a pretty long flight.

41. What does “chariot” really refer to in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?

A. The Earth. B. The Greek god.

C. Solar Impulse. D. Birds.

42. Which of the following is TRUE of Solar Impulse?

A. It can only fly at night. B. It has already flown across the US.

C. It is powered by the sun. D. It needs gas to work.

43. In the passage, what is mentioned as the cause of pollution in China?

A. Overpopulation. B. Burning coal or gas.

C. Using solar energy. D. Heavy traffic.

44. What does the writer mean by “That‟s a pretty long flight”?

A. It takes a lot of time to get Solar Impulse going.

B. Solar Impulse moves very slowly.

C. Solar Impulse will be in use for a long time.

D. Solar Impulse has a long way to go to take the place of the sun.

45. The passage is most probably taken from___________.

A. a Greek myth B. a science fiction

C. a story-book D. a science magazine

D

Growing mushrooms (蘑菇) is probably the easiest thing you can do

even if you are new to mushroom growing. It is becoming more

common because restaurants are starting to create more dishes that

include mushrooms.

Mushroom growing is easy. To start, you need to have a space

where you are going to grow these mushrooms. It does not have to be a

huge space but just enough for you to grow as many mushrooms as you

need. When you have found the space perfect for you, you can start researching what kind of mushrooms you want to grow. There are a lot of mushrooms to choose from and not all of them are

Saturday, March 24th

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

Popular breakfast foods in the United States, as in many other countries around the world, include coffee, milk, juice, eggs and bread. Some other breakfast items served in the United States are thought by many to be traditionally American. However, they actually come from other countries.

A very popular breakfast food in America is the pancake---a thin, flat cake made out of flour and often served with maple syrup. The idea of the pancake is very old. In fact, pancakes were made long ago in ancient China.

Bagels, a round thick bread with a hole in the middle, are also popular for breakfast in America. Polish people in the late 1600s came up with the idea for the first bagels and this new kind of bread soon took off across Eastern Europe.

In the late 1800s, thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe traveled to the United States and brought the recipe for bagels with them. Today, New York bagels are said to be the best in the world. Many people have them with cream cheese for breakfast on the go.

Doughnuts (usually spelled “donut” in the United States) came from France. They were served to American soldiers in France during World War Ⅰ(第一次世界大战). Most people will tell you that they can’t work without a cup of

coffee in the morning. Research has shown that a cup of coffee does

give a person slight excitement.

Legend said that Kaldi, an Ethiopian, found his goats happier

while enjoying coffee plants. Curiously, he tasted the leaves and began

to dance around. Whether the Legend was true or not, the discovery of

coffee dates back to 800A. D. Soon Arabians were roasting coffee beans. Muslims were drinking coffee to stay awake by 1000 A.D. A merchant from Venice introduced coffee to Europe in 1615. By 1696, the Dutch started growing the coffee bush in Java. By 1723, coffee plants were introduced to the Americans. Today, coffee is the most popular drink in the world.

Caffeine is the major chemical in coffee. It blocks(阻止) adenosine, a chemical that makes you sleepy. People can get a pick-me-up or stimulation(刺激) from the drink. The stimulation does not last long. Caffeine poisoning can occur if more than 400 milligrams of caffeine is drunk in a short period, which is about four to five cups of coffee. Caffeine will also cause sleep difficulty, so it should not be drunk before bed.

Caffeine has many advantages. Studies have shown that it helps improve some skills in elderly women. Women who drank three cups of coffee daily scored higher on memory tests than women who drank one cup of coffee. According to newser.com, one cup of coffee a day protects the brain. Coffee also can help people keep away from many diseases according to webmd.com.

Large amounts of coffee can cause nervousness, worries and a fast heartbeat. However, if you mix coffee with milk, it’s fine. Caffeine can be addictive like any drug. The more you drink, the more you depend on it. For some people, just one cup of coffee a day is OK.

Millions of British people have the traditional “thank you” and took the place of it with the less formal “cheers”, according to a survey.

Although the common person will say “thank you” nearly 5,000 times a year, one in three are more likely to add a “cheers” or “ta” where it’s needed to show they are fashionable.

One in twenty now say “nice one” instead, while the younger are more likely to offer a “cool” than a “thank you”.

“Merci”, “fab” and even “gracias” were also listed as common phrases to use, as “much appreciated(感激)”.

One in twenty who took part in the survey of 2,000 people by the Food Network UK for Thank You Day, which is marked on November 24, 2011, said a formal “thank you” was now not often needed in everyday conversation. More than one in ten adults said they regularly won’t say thank you if they are in a bad mood. Most people stated that saying thank you was something that their parents trained them. A huge 70 percent of those questioned will say thank you to a person’s face without even meaning it, while one fifth avoid(避免)saying it when they know they should.

It seems our friends and family get the stress of our bad manners. Half of them admit (承认) they’re not good at thanking those closest to them. Many of them explain that they don’t say thank you because their family “already know I’m grateful”.

When spoken words won’t do, it falls to a nice text to do the job for most people.

One third will still send a handwritten thank-you note---but 45 percent admit it’s been more than six months since they tried to send one.

A quarter of British people say “thank you” with food, with 23 percent cooking a meal to show their appreciation to someone. Another 15 percent bake a cake.

It follows that 85 percent of people will be angry because of not getting the gratitude (感激) they feel they should receive.

The word “generosity” has been devalued(贬值) somewhat recently. A man may give his friend a house in the beautiful suburb(市郊); A rich man could fly halfway round the world to meet his friends for his birthday party. In this case, generosity is 36 an action of showing off than a sincere action of giving.

Real generosity is: to offer and love without expecting anything in return.

Real generosity, when you meet, is simply so pleasant. And it belongs to the rich and the poor. A traveler in a faraway place felt it he shared bread, room, even bed with a farmer's family.

Another story is about 39 university student from Oxford. He did something out of his natural sense of generosity when he learned that his roommate couldn't afford an impossibly expensive textbook, a book which was very rare in second-hand shops. 40 that his roommate was far too proud to accept such a book as present from him, the rich student bought a new copy for 35 pounds at Blackwell's bookshop. He dirtied it up a bit and tore off the paper cover, made a few dog-ears(卷页) and pencil 41 against what he thought might be important parts, and wrote an invented name in the front. He even remembered to age the ink putting it over fire. Then he went back, looking extremely proud of himself and claiming to have got the book in a second-hand bookshop. “Beaten them down to two pounds!” To make his friends believe him, he showed a receipt(收据)for the money by buying himself book at the same place.

Ten years later, the poorer student 44 to know the truth. Actually he was suspicious(怀疑) at the very beginning, though he didn't ask his richer friend to tell the truth. He appreciated the invaluable generosity as well as the valuable book.

Real generosity lies in the 45 thoughtfulness, not its price or wrapping of the gift. It is one of the things which make us human and should be honored more than we do now. 根据短文内容选择最佳答案。 ( )36. A. less ( )38. A. when ( )39. A. a

1998, my hard year. Because of very poor health, I had to stay in hospital. But it was my second year at high school! I worried about my study and my future. What I felt was not only pain, but also hopeless. Just then, my friend -- a politics teacher in my high school -- came to help me. As I know, this old man is also a famous lawyer with busy work. But he gave up his work more than one year and taught me in the hospital almost every day. He gave me both knowledge and the confidence for the future.

With his help, I overcame the difficulty and became a college student. I couldn't express my thanks in words, because he did too much for me.
