Two European Summer Must ‘Seas’

When you think of summer, the beach, clear water, sunny skies, and relaxing days are a few things that come to mind, and two of the best places to experience these summer feels are two gorgeous European bodies of water: the Mediterranean Sea and the Adriatic Sea! These two incredible Seas hold some of my favorite travel memories and I would revisit each one in a heart beat!

The Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea can be accessed from various European countries as well as a few North African countries. And while many think of visiting Ibiza, Malta, or the Greek islands to experience the Mediterranean, my Mediterranean beach days came while visiting the seaside city of Marseille in the South of France! Marseille was a lovely city with easy access to the Sea, also with pretty sandy beaches. The gorgeous crystal clear blue water made it unlike any beach day in America! Not only were the beaches amazing, but the city of Marseille was adorable and filled with numerous cute shops and seaside restaurants. And the Mediterranean-style food was delicious!

The Adriatic Sea

The Adriatic Sea is equally as stunning and surely worth a visit! The Croatian coast has numerous beach clubs, some private and some public, that tourists are able to visit and you can experience the beauty of the Adriatic Sea there! Zrce Novalja, a Croatian seaside town I visited, was impressively featured by the rather rocky beach in place of sand. The rocks were small and smooth, making swimming in the sea and wading in the water just as easy as sandy beaches! Plus the locals in Croatia are also extremely friendly, making the experience even more memorable.

21. The writer’s trip to the two seas was full of__________.

A. unbearable hardships B. various adventures

A. Ibiza. B. Malta. C. funny events C. The Greek islands.

C. Its rocky beach. D. wonderful experiences D. Marseille. D. Its friendly locals. 22. From which place did the writer get to the Mediterranean Sea? 23. What makes Zrce Novalja so special? A. Its beach clubs. B. Its beautiful sea.

President Barack Obama speaks as he meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping over international security issues during the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, March 31, 2016.

While they report slow progress over major disagreements, what do average citizens in those countries think about each other? A study by the Pew Research Center offers some answers. Only 38 percent of Americans said they have a positive view of China, according to a 2015 Pew survey. And in China, only 44 percent of people surveyed gave the United States a positive rating. Americans expressed concern about the large amount of U.S. debt held by China and the loss of jobs to China. Last year, the U.S. Treasury Department said China held $1.2 trillion in U.S. government debts. People polled in China said they believe the United States is trying to prevent China from becoming as powerful as the U.S.

The views reflect some of the tensions between the nations’ leaders. The United States has been

strongly against China’s construction of artificial islands and military facilities along the disputed South China Sea. And there have been disagreements over how to respond to recent North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

A joint statement from U.S. and China after Thursday’s Obama-Xi meeting said both countries agreed to work together on nuclear security. The Obama administration said China has agreed to sanctions to protest recent North Korean nuclear tests.

But Xi expressed opposition to a new missile defense system for South Korea, according to Chinese media reports. Such a system is being considered by U.S. and South Korean leaders to protect South Korea from a North Korean attack.

At the start of his meeting with Xi, Obama said, “Of great importance to both of us is North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, which threatens the security and stability of the region.” Xi said China and the United States “have a responsibility to work together.”

As for issues dividing the two nations, Xi said both sides could “seek active solutions through dialogue and consultation.”

The two leaders met during a 53-nation conference on nuclear security in Washington, D.C.

24. According to a 2015 Pew survey, ________.

A. Most of the Chinese surveyed gave a positive view to the U.S.

B. Neither country was given a high positive rating from each other.

C. Americans believed that China held the most of U.S. government debts.

D. Chinese people surveyed believed that China would become as powerful as the U.S.

25. The American government has a(an) _____ attitude towards China’s construction along the South China Sea.

A. supporting B. uninterested C. opposing D. doubtful

26. Both American and Chinese governments agree on _________.

A. a new missile defense system for South Korea

B. what to do with recent North Korean nuclear and missile tests

C. the cooperation on nuclear security

D. territorial disputes in the South China Sea

27. Which of the statements is not true according to passage?

A. President Obama attached great importance to North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons.

B. China supports the UN sanctions on North Korean nuclear tests.

C. China is unlikely to work together with the U.S. on North Korean nuclear issues.

D. President Xi suggests dialogue and consultation to settle down the problems between the two nations.

C

The Beijing Youth Daily on Thursday called attention to the struggles of traditional operas in China. The newspaper said the number of unique traditional Chinese opera styles had decreased to 286 from 368 in 1959, with three disappearing every two years on average. Altogether, 74 opera styles had only one troupe left, and most were at the risk of fading away.

Xie Boliang, a professor at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, said, “It is well known that people should be held accountable for soil erosion, but why do we feel at ease when traditional operas fade

It took 100 years, but finally, scientists proved Albert Einstein’s theory that gravitational waves exist. The waves were predicted as part of Einstein’s general theory of relativity nearly 100 years ago. It was the theory of the physics behind the workings of our world and the universe.

The idea was that the waves are like ripples in space, caused by some of the violent and energetic Now a group of scientists, including ones from Caltech, MIT and the LIGO Scientific, Collaboration finally found the gravitational waves.

David Reitze is the executive director of the LIGO observatory at Caltech.

“We have detected gravitational waves. We did it!”

What are these gravitational waves?

Well, imagine throwing a rock into a pond. When the rock hits the flat surface of the water, it creates ripples or waves. Space-time is like the surface of the water. So that means gravitational waves are like the ripples moving out from where the rock hits the water.

It might be hard to understand, but those gravitational waves expand and contract space and time as

书面表达:

Dear Sir,

I’m writing to talk about the new possible way of teaching in English for English classes. On the whole ,I support it. First of all, language is used for communication, and when we learn English in an English speaking environment, we can learn the language more easily and make faster progress. Besides, learning English in an English –speaking environment, we can also improve our oral English and listening ability.

Every coin has two sides. The new teaching method may cause difficulty for some struggling students, and it may be difficult for us to follow when the teacher explains grammar. So I recommend that the new method of teaching be carried out step by step and not be used in all English classes.

But actually, I was wrong! I was looking for a public telephone to give my American friend Danny a call and tell her that I had arrived. A friendly old man asked me if he could help me.

“Yes,”I said,“I want to give my friend a ring.”

“Well, that’s nice,”he said.“Are you getting married?”

“Who is talking about marriage ?”I thought.“I only want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me where there’s a phone box?”

“Oh!”he said,“there’s a phone downstairs.”

When at last we met, Danny explained the misunderstanding to me.

My younger cousin is very naughty. He is 6 years old. He likes to play around with us. One example took place 2 years ago. My younger cousin was invited to have lunch with us. When he just came in at the door of my bedroom, my little sister started crying. I was wondering what happened to her. Then I saw the naughty boy wearing a mask (面具) on his face. It was a blooding head with green eyes. I had to comfort my sister and explained to her what the truth was.

Another example happened last year. My cousin’s mother was going shopping, so he was sent to my home again. He just held the TV remote control(遥控器) and told me to leave him alone. A few hours later I got out of my bedroom to see if he was doing well. I just saw a broken alarm clock on the floor and he was sitting on the sofa having a drink. I wanted to cry because it was almost a new one. He jumped off the sofa when he found that I was there. He said he did not do that on purpose(故意). Here are some of the movies that inspire you to travel.

The Lord of the Rings

The story is about Frodo, his friends and their adventurous journey through Middle-earth. Filmed in about 150 locations all over New Zealand, this travel movie shows its beauty. From the rolling hills of Matamata to the volcanic region of Mt Ruapehu, this is the best move to see New Zealand. Also, this travel movie might have the only distinction of being inspired by travel. The director of the movie Peter Jackson first read the novel on a train going from Wellington to Auckland when he was just seventeen.

Temple of Doonz was filmed mostly in Sri Lanka and Macau. Last Crusade was filmed in Italy, Spain and Jordan including an excellent view of Petra. Unlike the other films, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was filmed almost entirely in the United States. However, their shots of Iguazu Falls are amazing.

Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile

Six-year-old Matthew Parker spends three days a week getting dialysis(透析) treatment at University Hospital in San Antonio. Because of this, Matthew, a triplet, isn‟t able to join his brothers in their first-grade class every day. But thanks to their teacher, Lindsey Painter, that is about to change.

Matthew‟s kidneys were injured shortly after his birth, and he needed to be put on dialysis. He had a

kidney transplant when he was two years old, but after a few years his body began to reject the new kidney, and he went back on dialysis.

The possibility of finding a kidney match was very low. Painter was the first to sign up to be tested as a match and proved to be exactly what Matthew‟s family was looking for.

“I look at my own boys and then I see some of the things Matthew isn‟t able to do because of his illness,” Painter, a mother herself, said. “At that moment, I decided to have a try to see if my kidney suits him.”

“Having a kidney transplant will be a major event in Matthew‟s life. It will change the quality of life he has. He will be able to do certain things he can‟t do now, like eating certain foods, drinking more water, and going swimming,” Matthew‟s mother said. “He knows what the transplant‟s going to do to him.”

The University Transplant Center set up a website, mattswish. com, when Matthew was looking for donors. After Painter was found to be a match, Watthew‟s family decided to keep the site going in order to raise awareness and help other children looking for donors. “We‟re keeping it up, so if there are other people who want to be a donor for somebody else, we want to give them an opportunity.” Parker said, “There are other kids here doing dialysis, and they need a kidney too.”

A recent documentary produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation has caused a stir in China and in the UK.

The documentary, titled Are Our Kids Tough Enough? Chinese School revolves around five Chinese teachers who are sent to teach 50 UK teens at a school in Hampshire.

The teachers instruct the students for a month. The pupils are then tested, and the results are compared to the ones of those who have continued in the regular UK education system. The idea is to see if the Chinese method improves academic performance.

The Chinese teachers use their own teaching ways but receive strong resistance from the students. A clip from the documentary online shows some problems, with Chinese teachers calling their students lazy and lacking in discipline, while the students say the high pressure and teachers are driving them crazy.

This has aroused a new debate in both China and the UK, with some arguing the teenagers need more regulation and discipline. Others say Chinese methods encourage rote(死记硬背) learning instead of independent thinking. For instance, Chinese language teachers should do more than pass on knowledge about words and characters. They should inspire students, helping them feel the sentiment(思想感情) from Chinese literature. This is a higher level of teaching.

Yang Dongping, dean of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, says, “The Chinese teaching methods are designed to strictly train the majority. Foreign teaching methods, however, are more natural

and relaxing, and designed to inspire students‟ interest in learning. Education methods are based on culture. That is why a successful education method in one place may not work that well when simply „transplanted‟ into another place.”

Some Chinese teachers documented in the film say they think the British students don‟t have that high competition pressure like Chinese kids since their country provides high social welfare.

Yang Dongping says, “The documentary does reflect some problems rooted in traditional Chinese teaching methods. Nobel prize winner, Yang Zhenning, gave a very fair comment on this issue. He said the Chinese-style education method works for most ordinary qualified students effectively, helping them reach high standards. However, it may compromise the training for high-potential outstanding students.”

The expert notes China has started to pay more attention to helping students learn with joy. However, the exam-oriented education system still needs to be improved.

29. What is the purpose of 50 UK teens‟ being instructed by five Chinese teachers?

A. To test the intelligence of the UK teens.

B. To help the school to improve their teaching efficiency.

C. To do some practical research into the UK education system.

D. To test the effectiveness of Chinese teaching method.

30. What‟s the meaning of the underlined word “harsh” in the forth paragraph?

A. Extremely strict. B. Quite friendly. C. Rather cold. D. Very attractive.

31. According the report, Chinese teaching methods should focus more on __________.

A. passing on knowledge B. encouraging independent thinking

C. regulation and discipline D. training the majority strictly

32. How does the writer organize this report?

A. By giving examples. B. By making comparison.

C. By quoting other people‟s opinions. D. By listing some data.

Every day, hundreds of thousands of us visit coffee shops. While we drink our coffee, we may connect our smartphone to the shop‟s Wi-Fi network, and keep in touch with friends, via services such as Facebook.

As well as socializing, we may use the time and free access to a wireless connection to get on top of our finances. Transferring money from your account to others‟ accounts is nothing more than a few taps on your screen.

But what coffee drinkers do not realize is that lurking(潜伏) among their fellow coffee-lovers are bank robbers.

Unbeknown to you, this modern form of bank robber is silently collecting all your private data. The only sign of his thievery is perhaps a little smile as your bank log-in details appear on his screen.

You‟ll only realize when you later go to a cash machine to withdraw(提取) some money, and discover that every penny in your account has been cleared out.

The common method for thieves is to use your smartprhone‟s Wi-Fi connection. They rely on the fact that most of us are not careful about the security of networks we connect to.

For example, when you are in a coffee shop, your smartphone will present you with a list of available Wi-Fi networks that you can use to connect your phone to the Internet. Most of these networks are run by legitimate (合法的) companies, but sometimes they are actually created by a thief sitting nearby with little more than a laptop.

These networks are often given names, such as “Free Public Wi-Fi”, which deceive smartphone users into logging in. On the surface, everything seems normal, and you will be able to connect just as you are
