It's not easy being a teenager— nor is it easy being the parent of a teenager. If your teen has you puzzled and upset, or even refuses to talk to you. the following offers a practical approach to

giving your child the space he needs to grow while gently making him know that you'll be still there for him when he needs you.

Offer your help always, but your advice only when asked. If your child is unwilling to

discuss a particular topic, don't force him to tell you what's in his mind. Let him attempt to solve things by himself — a sure sign to him that you support his growing independence and the greatest way for him to build self-respect.

Don't invade your teenager's space. Show the same respect for his privacy (隐私)that you would show for any adult relatives. Never read his mail or listen in on personal conversations. And do avoid going into his room to tidy up when he's not at home. Remember a teenager is old enough to maintain his own room.

Mirror only positive (积极的) feelings about physical appearance. Most teenagers are

oversensitive about how they look. Although they may be highly critical (批评的) about the way others look or dress, they are often unable to handle such criticism directed toward them.

Self-image is very important to teenagers, so keep a cool head about fashions your teen chooses to wear. You should look for ways to support and strengthen any positive comments your child makes about himself.

It may seem like a simple step, but talking to your teen about the risks of drugs (毒品) may help keep your teen drug-free. In fact, teens who learn about the dangers of drugs from their parents are less likely to (可能) try drugs than those who learn nothing at home.

Try to open up the lines of communication with your teen.

Not long ago, my daughter’s shoes were scratched(划损)by someone’s knife. I took the shoes to the shoemaker to get them repaired. He looked at them and said to me,“If you trust me, I will add more scratches on both of the shoes.”

I was confused and asked why.

He explained,“ As if the openings were made on purpose for a special style”.

I didn’t fully understand him, but I decided to leave the shoes there.

Two days later I dropped by from work to fetch the shoes. At the first sight I found there were indeed five or six more scratches on each shoe, but all the openings were patched(补)by red soft leather(皮革). They looked particular. I couldn’t help making compliments on the shoemaker’s skills.

Another time, there was a large opening on the back of my wife’s sister’s white coat. My wife took it over, checked carefully, and then said,“ Let me take it home and mend it.”

Three days later, seeing the coat again, I was shocked: the big opening was taken place by a beautiful flower and it took on a wonderful look. I gave my praise,“ It’s just as beautiful as a piece of art!”

The Indians invented and developed the system of numbers from 1 to 9 and 0. We can use the ten numbers to make any number from the biggest to the smallest.

However, the ancient Romans invented a different system (系统) of numbers. They used symbols (符号) and replaced them. 1 is “Ⅰ” and 2 is “Ⅱ”. For larger numbers, they invented new symbols—5 is “Ⅴ”, 10 is “Ⅹ”, and so on. But they didn’t have a symbol for zero.

Here’s a table of the Roman numbers. 1

Ⅰ 5 Ⅴ 10 Ⅹ 50 L 100 C 500 D 1,000 M

The Romans combined their symbols. In this way, “Ⅶ” means “5+1+1”, or 7. However, they found that “ⅡⅡ” (for 4) and “ⅤⅡⅡ” (for 9) were too confusing, so they thought out another idea. If the “Ⅰ” comes after the “Ⅴ”, then you add it (Ⅵ is 6); if the “Ⅰ” comes before the “Ⅴ”, then you subtract (减去) it (Ⅳ is 4). The rule is that you are allowed to add up to three (e.g. Ⅷ is 8), but only subtract one (e.g. XL is 40).

How to remember the symbols?

Ⅰis like a finger. In a whole hand, the thumb (拇指) and the little finger make a V. Ten fingers are both hands, so the two Vs make an X..

Here is a way to remember the other symbols (L, C, D, M):Little Cats Drink Milk.

( ) 51. How many numbers can we make according to the Indians’ system ?

A. three: 0, 9, 1 B. ten C. eleven D. lots of

( ) 52. Which number was not in the ancient Roman’s number system?

A. 1 B. 9 C. 0 D. 5

( ) 53. What does the underlined word “combined” probably mean in the passage?

A. 合并 B. 分离 C. 增加 D. 削减
