Reading

Using Language

Reading

Using Language

Exploring space is a dream shared by many people, but few have ever experienced the thrill

of space adventure. A few years ago, that field was open only to those who worked for NASA or

the space programs of other nations. But now private companies are getting into the space

race.Google and the X PRIZE Foundation have joined forces to challenge ordinary people to

explore the moon. The first team that successfully soft-lands a robotic rover(天体登陆车) on the

moon will receive a $20 million prize. The second team to touch down on the moon will win $5

million. Teams can also win an additional $5 million in bonus prizes for completing tasks such as

discovering water ice.To win, contestants(竞赛者) must land their craft on the surface of the moon

and let it roam for more than 500 meters, or 1,640 feet. The craft must also send video and Internet

clips (片断) back to Earth in real time.Google and the X PRIZE Foundation announced the

competition on September 13, 2007. “The Google Lunar X Prize calls on entrepreneurs(企业家)

and engineers from around the world to return us to the lunar surface and explore this environment

for the benefit of all humanity,” said Peter H. Diamandis, the head of the foundation, when the

contest was announced. “We hope to bring this historic private space race into every home and classroom,” he added.Teams are already gathering at the first commercial spaceport in the Mojave

Dessert in California to work on their spaceship designs. Contestants have until December 31,

2012 to qualify(取得资格) for the contest, which ends in 2014. The last time humans went to the

moon, the voyage inspired a generation of scientists and explorers. Google and the X PRIZE

(二)From a plane we can see the fields, cities, mountains or seas below. If we go into space, we

see more and more of the earth. People and man-made satellites have been sent out into space to

look at the earth carefully and people have learnt more about the earth in the last few years.

The sea looks very beautiful when the sun is shining on it. But it can be very terrible when

there is a strong wind.

The sea is very big. It nearly covers three quarters of the earth. The sea is also very deep in

some places. There is one place where the sea is about 11 kilometers deep. The highest mountain

in the world is about 9 kilometers high. If that mountain was put into the sea at that place, there

would be still 2 kilometers of water above it!

In most parts of the sea, there are many kinds of fishes and plants. Some live near the top of

the sea. Others live deep down. There are also a lot of small living things, and lots of fishes live

by eating them.

The sea can be very cold. When people go down, the sea becomes colder and colder. Only

some men can go down into the deep sea. But, in 1970, five women scientists lived in the deep

sea for fourteen days.

D. The deeper the people go into the sea, the colder they will feel.

5. The last sentence “But, in 1970, five women scientists lived in the deep sea for fourteen days.”

means that________.

A. women wanted to live in the deep sea for a long time.

B. women could go deeper into the sea than men.

C. women liked living in the deep sea better than men.

D. women could do the same work as men.

(三)Is there anything more important than health? I don‟t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth.”

wise people say. You can‟t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.If you have a hea

dache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if

you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure,I

think you should go to the doctor. The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperatu

re, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After t

hat he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow hi

s advice.Speaking about doctor‟s advice, I can‟t help telling you a funny story.

An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weak

ness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and sa

id there was no medicine for his

disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good

rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wineevery day and take lon

g walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to

follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said t

hat if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn‟t smoke more than one cigarette a day.A month

later the gentleman came into the doctor‟s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the d
