SECTION A TRANSLATION (60 MIN) CHINESE TO ENGLISH

Translate the underlined part of the following text into English. Write your translation on ANSWER SHEET THREE.

Debord’s observations, of course, reached only a minuscule audience at the time, although his insights have since become widely accepted and (selectively) appropriated, as we shall see. For all the brio with which they were briefly taken up on the streets of Paris, their edge was blunted挫伤 by the much broader appeal of another 1968, and one that was represented by another city. Whereas Paris stood for protest, San Francisco stood for pleasure, and while political and personal licence were at first as closely associated there as for the Situationists, the rights of pleasure and of desire that the hippy movement asserted were quickly separated off, then held against the “straighter” political demands of Parisian radicalism, and finally commodified into “lifestyle” alternatives. By the end of the 1960s, the fallout from upheavals of 1968 had begun to settle into two patterns.

PART VI WRITING (45 MIN)

In today’s China many scholars and university leaders are reflecting upon the country’s educational reform and future development, showing their concern over a wide range of topics. One popular belief is that “Education is expensive, but the consequences of a failure to educate—especially in an increasingly globalized world—are even more expensive”. What is your view on this? Write an essay of about 400 words. You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.

In the first part of your writing you should state clearly your main argument, and in the second part you should support your argument with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or make a summary.

Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

As a senior student in university, I have gone through many interviews -- interview to recruit new club members, interview for internship and so on. In my opinion, the procedure of recruitment is like choosing apples -- viewing resumes is like picking up apples, you can only decide the appearances, or in other words, whether there are obvious flaws. Interview is like the first bite, by which you know the real taste of an apple. But only by eating the entire apple can you see the core. That is to say, only by working with a person for some time, can you judge a person. So to me, interview can help us to get a basic knowledge about a person and is indispensable in recruitment but it has its limitations.

Interview is most helpful in the aspect that it provides interviewer a chance to observe something that resumes can not tell, for example, How the interviewee behaves? Is he/she nervous under pressure? Does he/she has excellent communication skills like eye contact? These things might be very important. Because some job might ask more than one's academic knowledge it might also require the ability of dealing with people and so on. Another important function of interview is that it can help interviewer to decide whether the interviewee lied in his/her resume. As we all know, under hot completion, in order to get more chances, some people tend to lie in their resumes about their experiences and so on. But in an interview, interviewer could ask question related with interviewee's experiences. If the experiences are made-up, it's easy to detect. The last advantage of interview I want to list here is that it can be carried out in different forms for different purposes for example, pressure interview -- to see how a person react under harsh conditions, group interview -- to see how a person act in a team and so on. Thus, by arranging an interview in a particular form, a company can find out the person most suitable for the job.

But interviews have their limitations. You can not find out all about a person in only a few hours like that some apple might appear good and taste sweet but bad in the core.In summary I want to point out that interview is an efficient way for companies to choose their employs but only by observing the long term performance, can you judge an employee.

Some people are committed to their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals. What is guiding them is a kind of illusion. Some people think that illusion is good for success while

others argue that it is not so good because it may get people unrealistic. As far as I am concerned, illusion is necessary in our life only if it is encouraging and realistic.

There are several reasons.First of all, there is power in illusion. The illusion can lead people to the path they want to go on and it gives us passion. We need to live each moment whole heartedly, with all our senses so that we can find pleasure in the fragrance of backyard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, and the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. The illusion can be enthusiastic love of life that puts sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our steps and smooths the wrinkles from our souls.

Secondly, we are born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant’s delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle. It is this childlike wonder and illusion that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, no matter how old they are. For example, the famous cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shouldrs would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes.Music, for him, was an elixir that made life a never-ending adventure. As author and poet SamuelUllman once wrote, “Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”

Lastly, people with illusions also love what they do, regardless of money or power or title. Ifwe cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as do a part-time vocation, like the headof state who paints, the nun who runs marathons and the executive who handcrafts furniture. Wecannot afford to waste tears and energy and time on “might-have-beens”. We need to turn thetears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.

To sum up, God gives each bird its food, but he does not throw it into its nest. Whereveryou want to go, just cherish your precious illusion and let your dream be realized.

In some developed regions in China, some women decide tostay at home to be a professional housewife because the familydoes not need a second cheque. Do you agree or

disagree withsuch a choice? Write a composition of about 400 words to stateyour view. In the first part of your essay you should state clearly your main argument, and in the second partyou should support your argument with appropriate details. In the last part you should bringwhat you have written to a natural conclusion or make a summary.

You should supply an appropriate title for your essay.Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to followthe above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

Professional Housewife Is Not Favored by the Majority

The term “professional housewife” refers to a woman who decides to stay at home full-time aftermarriage. With the growing popularity of this practice, it has been put under the limelight andaroused more concerns from the public. An increasing number of people believe it is a personalchoice; however this opinion is also being questioned. Frankly speaking, I don’t think it is favoredby the majority of the public.

Firstly, Chinese people differ in cultural backgrounds from Koreans and Japanese, who tend tohold that man is superior to woman. Although in Chinese history, women were oppressed andregarded as inferior, the founding of new China has lifted the ideological obstacles to the greatestextent. Today most women are working outside their homes not for the reason the family needs asecond check but to prove their personal worth. Though housework is meaningful, it is not paidand, what’s worse, it is not socially recognized. Therefore, being a full time housewife is not thefavorite choice for the majority of modern Chinese women. Secondly, it is financially unwise for women to stay at home full time. Some well-off men may befond of a professional housewife, which will make a more comfortable and cozy home available, while the less wealthy men and families cannot afford such a luxury, since it will be verydemanding to support the whole family with only one check. Both husband and wife have to takeup responsibility of breadwinners.

Thirdly, the majority of women will strongly object to it, especially the better-educated group.Having received concepts of self-esteem and economic independence, modern women tend to besell-reliant rather than dependent on anyone else, even their spouses. For one thing, it is a wasteof their education and potentials; for another, they will not find it hard to adhere to boredom ofhouse chores and routines. They know that a professional housewife will be sneered and biased inthe community. A married woman IS a social being first who is supposed to fulfill their socialfunctions. In conclusion, it is self-evident that the professional housewife will never gain ground in averageChinese families, for it leads to possible misunderstanding and social contempt towards womenand may pose a significant threat to independence of a human being.

With the introduction of a relaxed teaching atmosphere, it isacceptable for students to interrupt teachers and drink water inclass, go to the bathroom during class and choose

whichclassmate to sit next to. Which one do you prefer, the classrights or the former strict discipline? Write a composition ofabout 400 words to state your view.

I Agree With Class Rights

As a student having received many years of education, I'm both nicely surprised and gratified bythe term“class rights”. This educational concept challenges the traditional education rules, and canbe considered as a revolution in classroom teaching. And my favor goes to the abandoning ofprevious rigid disciplines.First of all, class rights actually cater to natural physiological needs and basic legal rights oflearners. Students' drinking water and going to bathroom during class used to be denied due toclass disciplines previously adopted. And this practice is against human rights, according towestern educators. It can be regarded as an improvement that we have taken care of these basichuman needs. Schools and teachers used to stress students' obligations to observe schoolregulations, but tend to ignore their class rights. Students, though young in age, are inalienablepart of human, it was unreasonable for them to have obligations but no rights.Secondly, the classroom is not only a place for knowledge transfer, but also a place of humanityeducation. As independent individuals, children should be respected in class. Only when theirstatus as human individuals is valued, can they grow up healthily in a sound educationalenvironment. The caring for class rights implies the principle of equality, democracy and mutualrespect, thus encouraging the students' thinking and stimulating their creativity. Therefore, old-fashioned school discipline can no longer keep up with current situation. Respecting students'class rights means not only permitting them to drink water or go to bathroom during class, butalso encourage them to think, to speak out, to practice what is learned, to communicate and togive them enough opportunities to express themselves. They can question what teachers teach, make their options in doing teachers' assignment, or refuse to answer teachers' questions in class. In this way, they can fully enjoy their school experience.Whether the class rights are scientific or not, the move itself is valuable and significant. If theseclass rights can be translated into legislation and become legal principle, then students' rightswould be well protected. The education circle should not only recognize these class rights, but alsoput them into actual practice.

Some teachers argue that no Chinese should be used in English classes while others contend that Chinese language should have a role to play. What is your opinion? Write a

Say No to Chinese in English Class

Since language learning has become an irresistible trend nowadays, English, as the most widely used communication tool in the world, has gained more popularity than the other languages. Thus how to teach English has aroused an increasing concern in English teaching domain and out.Inevitably, there comes the dispute over whether Chinese should have a role to play in teaching English. From the perspective of a student, I propose an absolutely negative answer to the question. To begin with, language acquisition demands more than the study of language expression but also understanding of the culture and history behind. It is undeniable that no single language can be one hundred percent fully converted into another language. Therefore, the Chinese equivalentsin English teaching frequently suffer ambiguity and loss of original implications. Take“borrow”and“lend” for example, both mean“jie”in Chinese, yet their English definitions are remarkably different. “Borrow”means“take or receive from another person, with his or her permission and understanding that it will be returned after a certain time”and“lend”means“to give the possession or use of something on the condition that it will be returned later”. Without English explanation,an English learner will find it difficult to distinguish the two. So in English classroom, Chinese actually impedes learners’ understanding of English.Furthermore, once a teacher teaches English in Chinese, it is inevitable for him to follow Chinese way of thinking. Thus after being filtered through, the essence of English language lapses when reaching the students at the end. For the students’ part, they are likely to be conditioned to rely on Chinese since their mother tongue is much easier to convey their opinion. In this case, the situation will deteriorate. Studying English via Chinese translation just strengthens the Chinese thinking mode, which partly explains the phenomenon of“Chinglish”. Only by throwing off the walking stick of Chinese explanation, can students be trained to express themselves in English and think in English. It can be a bit painful in the beginning, but no pains, no gains. From all above, considerable disadvantages can be observed in teaching English in Chinese. As for us students, the study cannot amount to anything if we still rely on our mother tongue in the course of learning a foreign language. Therefore, I want to call on both teachers and students touse English exclusively for the sake of good command of English.

Will Tourism Bring Harm to the Environment?)

People come to appreciate the beautiful scenery, not to pollute the environment, so they will not pollute.

或:It is ourselves not tourism that bring harm.

或:They throw rubbish, but I pick up, so tourism brings no harm to the environment.

Nowadays, traveling has become an increasingly popular choice for most people to spend their holidays. While tourism contributes more to the economic development around the area, it also brings much harm to the natural environment. Countless examples of deteriorating environment are drawing our attention.

The destruction of environment starts from the construction of tourist resort. Roads and pathes are built to put the tourist close to nature. Hotels emerge to accommodate tourists who want to experience the real nature. In the process, the natural circulation is disturbed and the living conditions of the animals and plants are surely to be affected.

Tourists are another source of pollution to the environment. Tourist buses carrying hundreds of pollution-makers emit great amount of waste gases into resort, which decreases the quality of the air. Rubbish from tourists may also affect the soil and water which are vital to the sustainment of the whole environment.

When economic development is achieved at the expense of environment destruction, no real value is created. Under the perspective of sustainable development, tourism should be environmentally friendly. The government in areas of tourist resort should take precausion to stop the deterioration and limit the harm to the least extent.

With the rapid development of economy and advancement of transportation, people nowadays are provided with more possibilities and choices to spend their holidays. Tourism, therefore, enjoys increasing popularity among Chinese people. However, the booming industry has brought a series of problems to the environment, which in my opinion, severely damage the natural balance.

First of all, as the number of tourists grow quickly, many natural spots can no longer accommodate those visitors. For example, last year when I visited Yulang mountain in Li Jiang, I found that the grassland was nearly occupied by tourists sitting on it, chatting and having picnic.

And many of them left gabbage behind when they left. This was definitely a terrible damage to the originally weak environment. Secondly, the growing noises caused by the tourists may largely disturb the peacefulness of the nature and the lives of wild animals. It was reported by a newspaper that due to the increasing tourists, some swans in Qing Hai Lake can not give birth to their children.

To sum up, the booming tourism may bring a lot of negative effects to the environment. And we should try to develop tourism and protect the environment at the same time.

As the rapid development of market economy and increasing income, it is natural for people in China to seek for material enjoyments. And many of them choose to travel, which can both relax themselves and broaden their minds. However, as far as I’m concerned, as tourism brings a lot of good to modern people, it can also bring harm to our environment.

To begin with, when we travel to a famous place, we often buy those food that are specially produced only in that area. It’s often the case that we drop wasty food around after finishing eating it. For example, we can often find food that is used to feed animals thrown on the ground in a zoo. In addition, many symbolic buildings of places of interest are easy to be damaged by people of low awareness. They may write on them to recollect his or her trip. What’s more, many people are in bad habits such as spiting on the ground while they are traveling which can also be counted as a pollution to the environment.

To come to a conclusion, though tourism can please people, it may also bring harm to the environment. It is important for us to reduce the harm to its minimus degree and protect our environment for our own good.

Currently, there’s much talk about whether tourism bring harm to the environment. Some people think tourism doesn’t damage the environment seriously, while others hold the different opinions. They think tourism bring us more damage than its benefits. As far as I am concerned, I side with the former, in the belief that tourism’s benefits are larger than its shortages.

Admittedly, tourism bring harm to the environment as advocated by man, has its important role to play in protecting the environment. As is known to all, more tourism means more damage to the environment. However, these are numerous merits for tourism that giving us. First thing first, tourism brings us a lot of advantages in economy. That is to say, the better the tourism is, the more money we will make. Take 2008 Olympic Games as an example, the Games attract sounds of tourists all over the world to Beijing, which give a push to Beijing’s shops and places of interests. As a result, Beijing develops its markets largely. Second, tourism contributes a lot to environment protecting. An of us known that we should pay much attention to environment protecting as to make a progress in tourism. It’s necessary to have a lasting development. For instance, Beijing had made a lot of preparation to protect the environment during the Olympic Games. Obviously, there was not much damage in Beijing because of tourism booming.

Taking all these considerations into account, we can safely draw the conclusion that

tourism can not bring much damage to our environment, and to make use of it, our government should take kinds of measures to protect the environment.

With the improvement of our life standard, people have more money to spend on tourism. Now, tourism is a booming business in China. But, some people worry that too many tourists could bring harm to the environment, while others oppose. For my part, I agree with the first opinion.

There are several reasons for my opinion. Firstly, it is difficult to tell too many tourists to obey the rules of the place they visit to. And, although they learned this rules, most of them don’t want to obey the rules. They want to do everything at will. Moreover, more people in one place will cause more argues. When they have a argue with each other, the argue always will convert into fight. And, they may damage the public resource. Finally, too many people, have a travel will lead to a crowed in bus, trans and planes. This sistuation is very obvious in the goldern week.

For many people, they don’t visit for a true purpose. So, I think we should have our own attitudes, not always have a tour. Even if we have a tour, we should obey the rules, and protect our environment.

SECTION B ENGLISH TO CHINESE

Translate the following text into Chinese. Write your translation on ANSWER SHEET THREE.

Doors are the symbol of privacy, of retreat, of the mind's escape into blissful quietude or sad secret struggle. A room without doors is not a room, but a hallway. No matter where he is, a man can make himself at home behind a closed door. The mind works best behind closed doors. Men are not horses to be herded together. Dogs know the meaning and anguish of doors. Have you ever noticed a puppy yearning at a shut portal? It is a symbol of human life. The opening of doors is a mythic act: it has in it some flavor of the unknown, some sense of moving into a new moment, a new pattern of the human rigmarole. It includes the highest glimpses of mortal gladness: reunions, reconciliations, the bliss of lovers long parted. Even in sadness, the opening of a door may bring relief: it changes and redistributes human forces. But the closing of doors is far more terrible. It is a confession of finality.

PART VI WRITING (45 MIN)

In early August, the State Council approved a plan to lift road tolls nationwide during four major Chinese holidays: Spring Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day, May Day and National Day. The plan said passenger cars with seven seats or less and motorcycles will get a free pass on toll roads, bridges and tunnels. However, it depends on the local government to decide whether fees for airport expressways should be waived or not. Since last week, many municipalities and provinces have echoed the central government's policy. So far, a majority of those regions, including Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Fujian and Henan provinces, have confirmed that not only highways but also airport expressways will be free from tolls. The China Tourism Academy said in a report last week that Chinese people are estimated to make 362 million trips during
